Middleweight Titles Unification Bout

Before: Fight Cindy didn't want, HBO didn't want, but Debra made happen - unified middle weight title on the line and Crawford's dream of total big girl dominance hanging in the balance. Debra a peculiar challenge for Cindy - Crawford unquestionably the better technician, but often doesn't punch her weight, and instinctively seeks to keep girls outside which can be a mistake against Deb. Fight is very simple for McMichael - Knock. Her. Out. Cindy in black tankini, Debra in silver grey push up bra, navy bottoms.

During R1: Debra cooperating with Crawford, stalking the big brunette, but not punching, allowing Cindy to step and jab from outside. McMichael getting the rhythm, moving her head from side to side on occasion - seems unconcerned as Crawford posts a workmanlike shutout.

R2: There's a problem with letting Cindy get comfortable. She continues to touch Debra from long distance with the jab, then gets that long body lunging forward for crashing right hands - Deb soaks up a couple off her face and goes wobbly butt - the third spears in and down across the chin and DEB TAKES A SEAT! McMichael wide eyed and clearly distraught, hands at her chest takes 8 and is quickly jabbed to the ropes as Cindy lopes in. Crawford patient, lots of time on the clock, she jabs jug, stays away, trying to see how hurt Debra really is - McMichael leaning against the ropes in swoon isn't offering back. Crawford slowly getting brave, whistling in the right hand off the jab to tag face, then quickly palming Debra's shoulder to hold her back as Cindy steps away again. Dying moments: a thunderous Crawford right hand breaks Debra down, leaving her helpless against the ropes - Cindy now opening up with slow, but heavy handed lefts and rights but it's too late - Debra escapes wobbly butt to her corner as Crawford's patience betrays her.

R3: Debra recovering nicely, but she's gambling now, pitching from her hips, walking straight in - Cindy pulling away, drawing the blonde forward, occasionally walking her onto a curling hook into the chest before stepping aside. Midway through, Crawford steps back, then rocks forward with a slinging right hand on the jaw, jumping away as Debra swoons over her feet. McMichael continues to soak 'em up and keep coming, but Crawford's potshotting power wins her the round.

R4: Debra looking punished, but she's still all there and she's moving her hands this round. Crawford making the mistake of pulling away and letting Deb get extended on wide punches - brunette starts to get clipped along her jawline as McMichael swings away. Midway through, Debra with a vicious overhand right misses - Cindy backing up - and Debra uncoils a lethal left hand that catches all of Crawford's jaw, sprawling her senseless up against the ropes. Crowd on its feet as Debra pours into the breach - a hurt Cindy C seated on the ropes, hunching forward as McMichael squares up, jams her head in between Crawford's mitts, pushes Cindy back and rips away with leg driven short lefts and rights from side to side. Bang-bang blows land to Cindy's midriff and on her mouth as she is ragdolled up against the ropes - gut check for the brunette sees her make it to the bell, but Debra's on the board BIG - leaving Crawford lumpy with payback.

R5,6: Debra wins the fifth, Cindy the sixth as both girls are shiny faced with hurt, hands are lowered, both looking to trade more often as Crawford stands her ground and slugs with Debra. Crawford using her palms after punching to push Debra off balance, or laying in a right hand, then wrapping the blonde up for a break - very cagey, cautious approach to slugging that keeps the brunette on even footing with the blonde during very dangerous middle rounds.

R7: Debra warned for using her elbow to push against Cindy's throat in a messy first minute - blonde smearing the champ against the ropes with rough clinching, then Crawford settles into a jab/cross routine. Circling Debra, steering her with the jab, then walking her into right hands on the button, Cindy has her way, and in the final minute - the accumulation of brawny right hands on the teeth has Debra wobbly butt - she's faltering backwards as Cindy steps in with that slinging hook to the bra at the bell.

R8: Cindy still wheeling and dealing - Debra more stationary, just turning, bending at the waist, covering up to take the jab on her guard, the right hand skidding off her exposed skull. All working according to plan until late when Cindy pokes a jab, lifts her right and gets beaten clean to the punch as Debra lunges in with a sudden crashing right hand from her thigh - Cindy's cross sails harmlessly as her legs bend deep - straightening as she swoons forward - Debra giving her the left shoulder, then hacking a right hand hard across the face to drape a senseless Cindy C up against the ropes. Crawford dazed once again, covers up meek as Debra sets up to slug - only Cindy's instinctive rolling and turning with the blows saves her as the ref pulls an enraged blonde away after the bell.

R9: Debra breathing hard, face purpling up, hands at her waist - Cindy's eyes swelling, left hand across her belly, right hand at her jaw - the girls have taken plenty out of each other and the fight is still in doubt. Stepping flat footed around one another, Cindy lifts the jab off her belly, stuffing the mitt into Debra's round mounds of get down, or nudging back the blonde's sleepy face. Suddenly, Crawford bends into a telegraphed right hand that lands flush anyway and DEBRA IS HURT! McMichael reeling on trembling legs - Crawford steps inside, pulling a heavy left hook up into the blonde's stomach, once, twice, then leaning into another right hand off the face as Debra clatters backwards all a-jiggle. Crawford stomping forward, touches up the left and TAKES A HUGE RIGHT HAND ON HER FOREHEAD! Crawford's head jammed back on her neck, HER legs dip, then she stumbles forward into Debra's arms - McMichael clinching, twisting Cindy to the ropes and blonde batters brunette in a stunning reversal of fortune. Cindy with her dukes up, grimacing, twisting and blocking all she can as Debra leans in, jamming lefts and rights in on Cindy's jaw, then trying to pull the brunette's arms down. Final minute - Crawford using the ropes to lean back, then counter, dips a shoulder and CLOCKS Debra a stunning right uppercut - all leg and shoulder and DEBRA IS HURT! McMichael swooning mindlessly into the corner - Cindy palming her shoulders back, then laying in with brutal right hands - round ends with Crawford using the left palm against Debra's face or chest, just nudging the blonde back then laying in with monster rights as McMichael drifts dreamily out on her feet. Ref jumps in after the bell - sensational slugging round one of the years best!

R10: Crawford emerges from the tortuous 9th the better fighter. Debra in ruins, gets off her stool then wanders aimlessly as Crawford lurches painfully forward. Crawford still with some semblance of form, able to jab, body up, walk Deb to the ropes then go to work with workmanlike lefts and rights from medium range. Debra still woozy, gloves at her lips - she wobbles from one foot to the other as Cindy cuffs her - Crawford hooking the body and ear, using the shoulder, then chopping in the right hand has Debra taking numbly from bell to bell. Cindy unable to uptempo for the KO, just keeps something on Deb, touching her up for the shutout. At the bell, Deb still with the gloves at her lips, weaving on her glistening legs that wouldn't quit - Crawford lifting her mitts in exhausted triumph: UD10 Cindy C.

After: Crawford unexpectedly crass in victory, guiding Debra around the ring for a walk of shame, right hand at the blonde's waist - HBO execs told the champ to 'own' Debra tonight - she's just doing what she's told. Everyone knows McMichael can punch, but coming off the deck in the second to withstand withering abuse a testament to how badly she wanted glory. Crawford herself not thought of as a warrior, but she survived numerous dodgy moments on heart alone, and the 9th round stands as the most exciting of her career - a round in which she outslugged and ultimately broke a dangerous, motivated challenger.
