Before: Liu on the bubble. Most pundits don't think Doherty can handle Lucy's style, but confidence is everything in boxing, and when the mighty fall, they can be the most fragile. Doherty not about to relinquish the belt easily - she's a junkyard dog snarling over a hambone when it comes to this thing, and she didn't win it cheap, "I beat a good young fighter who is twice the woman Lucy is at this point," crows Shannen in pre-fight, "I'm looking forward to showing Lucy what it feels like to get used. I ower her." Shannen in tawdry leopard print cami and panties, Lucy in black push up, boy cut leopard print trunks, slick black ponytail. Fight nearly breaks out during the staredown as referee keeps 'em separated with the back of a hand on either tummy.

During R1: Lucy out brazen, hands down, strutting to Shannen, sticking her chin out, then undulating her upperbody to make a mockery of the Doherty jab. Shannen trying to make contact, poking and slashing with her left, keeping the right at her cheek as Liu dips and leans with breathtaking artistry. Liu clouting Shannen with straight arm counters as she bends low, leans back, and midway through, Lucy jumps in a running uppercut from several feet out, fitting the left mitt in between Shannen's panicky guard to stun the brunette midring. Jumping left, Lucy clangs a wide right hand into the jaw - jumping right, Liu cuffs the left off Doherty's chin - Shannen wobbly butt and hanging on for dear life. Lucy saucy to the bell, bending low, moving her head until Shannen is so completely out of position from missing that she is a ridiculously easy target. Shutout Liu - Lucy sending Shannen back to her corner humming with hurt.

R2: Basically 2 punches from Liu, a crashing lead left uppercut to start the round, and a vicious jumping straight right to finish it win the second big for Lucy. In between these clanging connects, it's pure showboat from the Asian Hammer - she's in and out on Shannen, touching her cheek insolently to Doherty's hips or belly, keeping her hands down as she makes Doherty miss over and over again. Doherty busted up from the two haymakers, wanders to her corner in a daze as Liu purrs viciously during the break.

R3: Shannen circling the wagons, stiffening her resolve - she's taken the early shellacking and she's still around. Liu still clowning, scoring the odd circus punch, but Doherty starting to get her jab on Lucy, driving in with straight right hands to the body to get the range. Round scored as a draw.

R4: Liu spends a minute just making Doherty look amateurish - finally slipping a wild left hook to sprawl Shannen face first into the ropes with the miss. Lucy going flat footed the rest of the way, starts to nibble at Shannen's body with beefy short lefts, dipping low and pivoting around the punches to keep Shannen turning. Doherty covering up, tentative - she's missed so much she's afraid of the counter.

R5: Lucy rings Shannen up with a brilliant offering out of the crouch, standing up straight to blast a sweet left/right off the champion's face and leave Doherty stepping in fence post holes. Rest of the way is pure showboat - some in the crowd booing as Liu prances and poses, making Doherty miss, but not making her pay. Liu slipping in under the right hand routinely gets behind Shannen and cuddles her up in a light bearhug around the belly - drawing howls of indignant protest from the frustrated champ.

R6: Doherty shaking off the bombs, comes out with a doubled up stick, herding Liu to the ropes and then piling on with heavy handed rights to the side and ear. Liu doesn't like the body shots, covering up, bending at the ropes and looking to finesse her way out, but Shannen's not having it. Doherty palming up, shoving Liu back and slugging away with indiscriminant brawling - right hands looping low into leopard trunks, left elbows smashing lips - Liu going groggy as she pushes back leather in the one sided trade. Shutout for Doherty leaves Liu slightly shaky - Shannen bellowing defiantly at the bell.

R7: Liu ends the rally with a blistering left uppercut from the floor, plowing the punch up into Shannen's white belly and leaving the brunette gagging out over her feet. Liu directly from Doherty's right side, sweeps a straight arm right to the face, crashing the fist off Doherty's eye and sending her stumbling away to the ropes - Liu bouncing punches off the back of Shannen's head in pursuit. Liu working in and out, flat footed, measured attacks - Doherty breaking down as Liu twitches short left hands into her ribs, or curling rights to the mouth.

R8: Liu sets the table with defence, twisting and bending around Shannen, leaning away from the right hand, and by the middle minute, Liu's counter shots start to score. Doherty missing rights and lefts and getting nailed in response - she can't see the incoming shots from weird angles. A sweeping right hand sinks deep to the belly on Doherty, putting her on her heels with a groan, and Liu leaves her feet to launch that gaudy left uppercut, blasting Doherty out and dropping her heavily to her back with sudden finality. KO8 Lucy Liu.

After: Liu with her right arm around Shannen's waist, takes the dazed ex-champ for yet another walk of shame - Liu keeping it slow, waving to her people, drawing it out for Shannen who seems barely aware of the proceedings. One of the cruelest performances of Liu's career - blatant, meanspirited carrying of the outgunned Doherty extends a merciless beating and culminates with a vicious knockout that could have come 5 or 6 rounds earlier.
