Boxing After Dark

Before: This is what Boxing After Dark’s all about—two hungry veterans, perennial top contenders, in a 50-50 fight. Both girls have had trouble getting past the top 3 or 4 flyweights, but there’s plenty of money in a talent-rich second tier—this bout goes a long way towards determining who gets the sweeter offers near term. Both own wins over the other—Packard the better schooled cutety, Doherty with the sock. Kelly in black bikini, Doherty in a long messy ponytail, red crocket bikini.

During R1: Kelly out with guard at her temples, Shannen with dukes up but at chin level. Girls pushing each other back with simultaneous jabs, prodding and poking for openings. Doherty following uo with whistling right crosses—Packard pulling away from the blows avoids serious damage, but Doherty’s the clear aggressor as she stalks her prey. Round to Shannen.

R2: Tasty shutout for Kelly Packard, moving laterally, stick-stick the jab, then hooking hard to  Shannen’s chin. Doherty trying to right at range, but she’s getting picked apart—girls coming together then bouncing apart—always with Kelly tagging the face of her fo0e with a biting hook and the constant rangefinder.

R3: Shannen looking like a frog on a lab bench as Packard takes the scalpel to her this round. Doherty stepping forward, trying to work her jab—Packard punching with the brunette, slips inside the jab every time with a nice, tight left uppercut on the point of the chin. Packard stepping in, pivoting out, doing most of her damage with the left, but nailing the odd lead right, doubling up on it to constantly put spanked surprise on Doherty’s mug. Shannen glossing up nicely—she eats and eats this round for another embarrassing shutout.

R4: Shannen abandons her boxing and gets Packard moving backards early, but Kelly doesn’;t ruffle. Retreating in good order, Packard’s still picking Shannen up with the wuick counter left uppercut, and midway through—Doherty chasing recklessly, pushes out the left, catches a perfectly timed counter up under the chin, and her back keg gives way as Shannen folds to one knee, D takes 8, flustered, enraged—she charges in again, flailing with wide, telegraphed blows, and Packard goes to work. Hands up high, bending at the waist to make Shannen miss, pivoting around the brunette—Kelly P lands that counter left uppercut over and over, snapping back Doherty’s head, putting wobble in those crocheted trunks and finally dropping Doherty to one knee for another 8 count. Remaining minute sees Shannen stop punching, filled with uncertainty—Packard finishes up on her with lanky hooks to the body and head, capping the sequences off with sharp right hands on the teeth.

R5: Kelly Packard just doing her thing, sliding economically around her foe, keeping her guard high and light, bending at the waist after drilling right hands, steering Shannen with the best educated left hand in boxing. Doherty lumping uop, but she’s taking the beating well, occasionally pushing a hard right hand through Kelly’s gloves, but not doing enough to win the round. Doherty hitting after the bell gets a scolding from the ref—Packard incensed at the rough play.

R6; Foul might have put Doherty back on track, Unpacking her jab from her waist, Shannen bangs at the mouth of her pretty opponent—Kelly momentarily distracted and D gets over with a crashing right on the teeth that spills Kelly ropeside. Packard wobbly butt for the first time in the fight, dips and rolls against the ropes, doing a masterful job of recovering as Shannen fails to capitalize. Kelly backing into a corner, works out of her high guard, digging into both sides of Shannen’s waist as the brunette loads up on right hands. Entertaining slugging carries on past the bell, both women scoring—Doherty getting the better of the brawl as the ref steps in.

R7: Packard puts down the riot with her jab, leaning away as she twists it into Shannen’s face, thumb down, Doherty trying the counter right over the top, but Packard’s slipping and evading it well. Kelly continues to glide effortlessly around the brunette, dragging that lead foot when she slides back to always be in position to counter. Shutout Packard.

R8: Shannen puffy faced, starts to press, but can’t break the disciplined blonde down. Packard in control—she’s turning Shannen round and round, keeping the brunette on the end of her punches. Packard’s accuracy downright frightening—she hooks Shannen’s left breast repeatedly dips down to hook the liver, leans in to poke the right hand into mouth—Doherty just soaking up these clean surgical strikes and muscling up with brawling right hands in response. Doherty nailing Packard flush after the bell again—ref takes her by the arm and pulls her to her corner for another stern talking to.

R9: Doherty finally rams that right hand in between Packard’s guard, jamming the blonde’s head back and Kelly’s legs tremble with shock. Doherty using a heavy jab to push Packard to the ropes, then pitching in the right hand—Packard fielding a monster cross on the jaw—head swiveling badly to one side—blonde pitches forward and nearly goes down as she props her butt on the ropes. Gets worse as Doherty dials in—lanky hooks pound trunk on Kelly as Doherty works her low, then piles in over the top with crashing right. Dazed blonde clinching after very cross finds her face—Kelly desperate to get out of the round. Final minute a wild one—Packard out on her feet, just pushing enough leather back at Shannen to avoid the stoppage—Doherty just a shade too wild, can’t find the chin again as Kelly makes it to the bell. Ref pulls the still-chugging Doherty away—Kelly staggers to corner nicked for a 10-8 without the knockdown.

R10: Doherty storms the gates and it is ON! Packard flat footed, trading toe to toe—she’s banged back to the ropes as Doherty takes command. Shannen in her slugging rhythm, side to side punches fists crashing hard against Packard’s shoulders and head—Doherty dragging a heavy wide left into Kelly’s belly—Packard cringing. Folding forward, doesn’t like it down there. By the middle minute—Doherty has Packard trapped against the ropes, but Shannen’s clearly exhausted—Packard staying alive by beating D to the occasional hook on the chops—Doherty’s legs shimmying but not giving out—this is agonizing stuff in the tenth. Fight clouts and clangs its way to the bell—both girls beaten ragged, both too spent to stop each other. Decision comes back big—UD10 Kelly Packard.

After: Doherty throws her head back in bitter disappointment as Packard lifts her slender arms in weary triumph. Big fourth round just put the blonde out of reach—Doherty unable to slug Packard under. Tremendous win for Kelly reaffirms her ability to box a puncher—Doherty left heartsick with this loss—Shannen hasn’t pulled out an important fight since beating Jessica Alba for the title.
