Before: "Charisma sent us all a wake up call on poor Lauren," a somber-faced Natasha says in prefight. "Up until then, I know for myself and a lot of the bigger girls - we had kind of dismissed Charisma as sort of a freak or sideshow - this jumped up little lightweight we'd dismiss as soon as we got our chance. Believe me - I don't think that any more. That beating Charisma fetched Lauren was just awful to watch - and to know that Carpenter has that in her? You have to respect her now - at any weight." Charisma brightening at the cordial tone from her opponent: hasn't always been the case since Carpenter arrived in the division. "I realize what I did to Lauren has given me a certain credibility - if not out-and-out notoriety - at 130, but I also put that performance into perspective. Graham was very tough and durable, but she didn't really have the punch to threaten me - I knew I had that fight going in. Natasha is a different story. She's got the same rangy dimensions and approach as Graham, but Nat can crack. This is a much more dangerous situation for me. As sharp as I was against Lauren, I'm going to have to be that much sharper to keep Henstridge under control." Charisma in black Veronica Mars bikini, white gloves. Nat in mapleleaf motif camisol crop-top, solid red panties, red gloves with white knuckle-bars.

During R1: CC relaxed midring - flatfooted, pointing the left shoulder at Nat, left hand at hip, right at chest - dipping, twisting and torso-rolling supple. Nat chin tucked, dukes up, hopping-to - looking for one-twos up top: seconds in, CC rolls a right, comes back a slick right of her own to Nat's mouth, flashes the hook off her hip and SITS HENSTRIDGE DOWN! Henny scooting to her buttocks, blinking in astonishment - sharp, biting punch catches her as she's trying to pitch herself: that's Charisma Carpenter timing all over. CC padding barefoot, all demure to neutral corner: Henny up immediately, more startled that hurt. Rest of the round - Natasha VERY tentative - standing in front of Charisma midring, hands up - trying to paw jabs at CC's face and club her rights over the top. Carpenter dipping and rolling - featuring those sneaky screened rights as she rolls-and-counters Nat's right. CC also dipping to her left, then licking wanton left hooks and uppercuts to 'plexus, breasts and chin - just swat-swiping away at big blonde goods. Shutout Charisma with a knockdown: not exactly the way Henny drew it up in training camp.

R2: CC consolidating - hopping-to, taking a big step in when she wants to close and get off, otherwise standing flat footed, rolling her torso and looking to counter as Henny punches and carries herself into range. Natasha's eyes narrowed in concentration - she'll put right hands behind jabs, occasionally follow up with hooks - but it's all glancing off cutely turned brunette shoulders or missing completely overtop. Henny showing healthy respect for Carpenter at the ropes - refusing to be lured in as CC baits her with that conspicuously low left: nice cat-and-mouse stuff as Charisma feigns little weaknesses and Natasha isn't buying. Most action takes place midring, girls in gun-platform stances. CC's jab a snapping, darting, startling punch off her hip - routinely spanking against blonde torso or smiting blonde lips: Carpenter able to control spots when Henny isn't punching. Down the stretch, girls just posturing and feinting one another: CC hops in, rips the tidiest of hooks off her hip to Nat's chin - wonderful clouting wallop puts big blonde stamping back on her heels, eyes wide. Single best punch of the round enough to seal it for Charisma - champ knows how and when to separate herself from an opponent in judge's eyes.

R3: Midring, girls in strong wide stances - it's all upperbodies in there. CC much more supple around her middle - swivelling on her hips, rolling to her right to absorb Henny's right hand sledgehammers, dipping low and to her left (out over her front foot) to sway close to the Henstridge ribcage, always moving noggin. Nat much stiffer - reaching out her jab and pawing it at CC, just trying to locate her, then leaning in medium-sweet right hands (either straight or clubbed, depending upon how close Charisma's skull is). Carpenter getting the better of it - snatching her hook across Henny's solid waistline or featuring it to Henny's solar-plexus; countering off the shoulder roll with sizzling right hands - just leaning in and slinging those babies through to Nat's sturdy chin.

R4: Natasha mesmerized - standing in front of Charisma midring - pawing and poking at her, afraid to load up for fear of Carpenter's counterpunching sorcery. CC takes advantage of the gaps - tart, snappy jabs off her hip spanking against pale torso, knocking back Henny's face - shorter gal able to find range any time she wants, knowing just exactly how far in she needs to step her lead (left) foot. Midway through, CC rolls a Henstridge right hand, comes back that blunt, shocking right hand counter on the mouth: Henny's hurt, frowning, trying to deal with it when a shocking hook clouts the mouthpiece off her teeth. DOWN GOES HENSTRIDGE! Tic-toc punching puts Nat on her back - Charisma padding past all curvy backside and swishing barefeet on canvas - just one glance down over her left shoulder as she passes blonde wreckage, nothing showy or gloating. Nat grimly rolling over her left hip to get up - shaking her head, blinking her eyes, opening and closing her mouth to work her jaw: blonde taking a terrific punch as she shakes it off, nods yes to the ref and resumes in good working order. Carpenter gambles a little - jabbing snappy off her hip to get Henny covered up, then RIPPING right/lefts to the body, bouncing her mitts hard off ribcage, then doubling up the hook to paunch - risking some exposure inside to put mileage on long blonde. Henny earmuffed up, trusting her rangy chassis to absorb this stuff - blonde takes a beating to the bell as champ rolls up the shutout.

R5: Henny assuming gunplatform in front of Charisma again - CC proving to have the better defense, quicker hands in combination, more accurate hands in potshot mode. Henstridge frowning in concentration, perplexed, but trying - jabbing a little harder now, aiming at Carpenter's chest, then laying down heavy right hands which (when they land at all) are taking CC dangerously behind her left ear. Carpenter pumping that upjab - sometimes biting, sometimes pesky, but always landing it when she commits to it. Sneaky right hand counters starting to get read and blocked by blonde - but Nat's giving up her ribcage as a result; Charisma snatching at it greedily via the swiping hook. Both women scuffed, neither woman hurt, and Charisma fighting her fight: it's another round for the champ.

R6: Henny finally uses her size, imposing bulk on her opponent to disrupt Carpenter's rhythm. Nat encroaching, reaching her left hand to palm at the left side of Carpenter's neck, pushing the brunette over and chopping at her right hands to back or skull. Also a little more footwork from Henny - just a step or two to the right enough to turn Carpenter's left flank, forcing CC to open her stance a smidge to accomodate. THAT makes Carpenter's shoulder roll a little less effective, so she takes her first firm right hands on the chest and mouth, backing her to ropes. Henny doesn't want to fight with Charisma on the apron, but blonde knows she's behind on points: she closes, uses the stiff-arm left hand to locate and control, then hacks away brute-force right hands to bully out the points in the 6th.

R7: Fight heats up as Henstridge solves some of the puzzle in front of her - spirited exchanges as girls look to punch for position and impose respective wills. Carpenter finally munching on a more serious variety of right hand - Nat clipping the chin, bashing in behind the ear, drawing warnings for the use of that stiff, extended left hand prod. CC redoubling her efforts to Natasha's statuesque torso - swiping vicious left hooks and uppercuts against ribs, 'plexus and jugs; dipping left to pull roundhouse right hands fat against Nat's left flank: these are the punches that crippled Lauren Graham. CC the busier beauty, throwing and landing more, but she's giving up some of the leisurely control she had earlier: Henstridge getting outworked, but tactically, getting more of the play in the 7th.

R8: Girls brawling in close - Charisma shoeshining Natasha's stomach, swishing mitts back and forth, shoulders hunched forward; Nat grimacing, hands loosely trying to wedge in behind CC's elbows to tie her up. Nat suddenly drops her right foot back a half step, getting room to come over the top a clubbing blast behind the head and CC'S HURT! Charisma with a look of dismay, steps back out of range, then nearly goes down - steadying herself with the right hand on top rope. Henny surges over to offence, sensing her chance: Carpenter keeps right hand on top rope (illegal), aiding her as she leans in and out, ducking her head, slipping Natasha's murderous finishing strokes. Henny unable to connect: CC finally snuggles up, reaching under Nat's arms to hang on tight - mouth open on strong blonde shoulder, eyes frowning shut - furious Henny batting as CC's back until ref's break. Carpenter in wounded, wobbly-butt retreat, slinking along the apron, ducking as Henny unleashes, then shooting in on blonde hips to tie up. Henstridge takes points big - but CC gets herself out of the round, obtains much needed TLC during the break. BSE corner dutifully gripes to ref about Henny's rabbit punching - but it's largely due to Carpenter's low-arcing head movement.

R9: Carpenter gets herself together, gambles on early exchange-tactics with Henny as both girls get off rights and lefts. Brunette's shorter, more compact swings find chin, cheek - backing Nat off: CC retaking the initiative in these brief, but significant engagements. Punch n' clutch for Charisma rest of the way - now, when she rolls Natasha's right hands, she's just as likely to come back with a clinch underneath as a punch. Henny bogging down - using that extended left to stiff-arm CC against her left jawline, hoping to club another right hand to CC's head: Carpenter always mindful of squirming in as close as she can to take away the chopping angle.

R10: Carpenter flatfooted, boxing outside behind that zesty up-jab, or stepping in off the slip to wrap Nat up tight. Henstridge scowling in frustration - brunette swamping her, wrestling with her, getting very rough in the clinches with her head and shoulders. Nat batting at Charisma's ribcage outside the brunette's extended arms in the clinches - but the punch Henny SHOULD be looking for - the uppercut - she's just not seeing. Carpenter controls the round - nipping little right hand potshots as she leans in, then tieing up, walking Henny around - never releasing clinches until ref actually gets in there and tugs at tanned brunette shoulder or bicep. Goes to cards, comes back UD10 wide for the winnah and STILL champ: Charisma Carpenter.

After: Henstridge chagrined, but classy enough to exchange heartfelt hugs and chat with Carpenter in the post-fight throng. "That was classic Charisma," a sheepish Nat says with a rueful smile on camera, "sorcery in a swimsuit. I KNOW John's going to kick my heinie for this - and I deserve it - I just didn't fight the fight we trained for. All credit to CC though - she totally took me out of my game - I felt like I was learning to box all over again, she made me feel so awkward. I know she sat me down a couple of times, but she really doesn't hit that hard - it's just amazing to me that she can do what she does without true welterweight power." Carpenter beaming - but it's friendly, fresh-faced joy - not meanspirited "I battered Natasha" gloating. "Natasha - you know - she really didn't get into a groove until the second half of the fight. When she started landing, I started hurting, believe me - but I think I'd whittled her down some by then - wicked away some of her power. I know she was really discouraged by that first knockdown - I could see it in her face - and it took her a few rounds to get her big-woman game together. After the fifth or sixth she knew she needed to stop me to win, and that really plays into my hands as a counterpuncher. It was a really tough situation for her and she did the best she could and I'm proud of her. Lots of girls let their disappointment and frustration creep into their legs and arms - but not Nat."
