A truly chaotic ending capped this most vicious of fights, as Rachel Bilson reached the bell apparently out on her feet, knocked down and subsequently beaten insensate by Ashley Tisdale’s final round charge, only to be awarded the win by a margin as slim as her opponent’s slender body, thus creating the bizarre circumstance of the loser conducting the postfight interview while the winner was examined by the doctor off-camera.

Since returning to prominence last year, Bilson’s career has been marked by a willingness to trash talk her opponents, and never was that willingness more on display than in the build-up to this fight. ‘The reason other girls bully Ashley is because she isn’t pretty enough,’ she said, back at their first joint press conference. ‘And the reason her boyfriend likes to do her doggy-style isn’t because he can’t admit that he’s gay, it’s because her ass is so much nicer to look at than her face.’ Cue shocked silence and scattered boos and Ashley’s lips pursed so tight they could have been sewn shut.

After weeks of stoic self-restraint while listening to this nonsense, it was no surprise to see Tisdale come out for round one neglecting the jab and gobbling up face punches for the chance to get in close and pound away on whatever bit of Rachel she could reach. Bilson responded with fading retreats aimed at keeping her back off the ropes, cuffing right hands to the back of Ashley’s head as she went charging by, and they swapped the first four rounds in surprisingly incident free fashion, Tisdale somewhat puffy-faced and Rachel pink-bodied but neither of them overly troubled by what the other had to offer.

During the break at the end of the fourth, Tisdale was given a bit of a talking-to on her stool, and whether it was by dint of that or not she fought a much smarter fifth, channelling her fury and forcing Rachel into a series of fist-churning engagements up close, her tempo so strong that invariably it was Bilson looking to back out of there on cringing legs. It had the feeling of a turning point, especially when she hurt Rachel good and proper at the start of the sixth with a shunting right cross, left hook combination as Bilson looked to jab. A suddenly wobbly Rachel was sent reeling to her left, her outstretched arm groping for something to hold on too; that she survived the round at all is a credit to her heart, that she survived it on her feet is thanks to the strength in those magnificent curvy thighs, because Tisdale had her bent almost double for the last minute of it, punching up a sweat on her torso while holding her in place with a forearm on the back.

It had been a mean-spirited fight throughout, but in a mostly low key kind of way until that point, although the memory of Bilson’s earlier invective was there in the meaningful looks they exchanged at the end of each round. After the bell rang this time, though, quick as a flash Ashley lifted and turned that pinning left arm and dug a vicious little elbow into Rachel’s spine, dropping Bilson onto her knees. She took the referee’s rebuke hot cheeked and dishevelled and utterly unrepentant, glaring past him and nodding with satisfaction as Rachel arched her back in silent pain, head back and teeth bared and eyes squeezed shut.

The storm finally broke in an uninhibited seventh. Tisdale’s composure gone at last; she went at Rachel with a snarl, looking to force a brawl. Tactically, it was idiotic. After six rounds she had been up by two, after nine she was down by three and needing a stoppage to win. They beat each other almost into ruination, reeling away on shaky legs only to wander back in for more, but Bilson fought with a level of hate that seemed unjustified given what had occurred. Twice she battered Ashley to her knees, and although Tisdale’s shiny pink boyshorts fit so tight to her backside that it seemed like they were designed specifically to negate it, both times Rachel was able to work a thumb in there, first to tug Ashley off balance and then to hold her in place for the clubbing assaults that put her down. On resumption the mics caught Rachel shouting, ‘Show me your ass, Ashley. Turn around. I don’t want to look at your ugly face, b###h,’ as she tried to wrestle Tisdale into a bent over position in the ropes. It wasn’t an occasion to make moralists cheer.

Even at her meanest, though, Rachel never tried to deny Ashley’s heart, and there was still time for one last twist as, with the crowd cheering her on, Tisdale came desperately close to winning it late on, flooring Rachel with a horrid, breath stealing left hook that Bilson barely survived. Whether she should have survived beyond that to the bell is debatable; Ashley’s final punches certainly looked to be landing uncontested, and she herself was in no doubt about who the real winner was when she snatched the microphone afterward. ‘You all saw that I beat her, right?’ she said, to another round of cheers. ‘I don’t care what they announce; I’m the only one of us who knows her own name right now. And if she ever says another thing about how I look, we’ll be doing this again, because I’ve stood up to bullies a hundred times meaner than Rachel ####ing Bilson.’ Bully she may be, but Rachel extended her winning run here, even if she might not remember it the next day.

(Bilson beats Tisdale UD10)
