When Alexandra Daddario stepped outside a tentative jab and got all of her upper body into a crashing right hand to the side of the head, dropping Mary Elizabeth Winstead on her back inside the first minute of their fight, it seemed like every single person in the crowd turned to their neighbor to ask the same thing. Was the beating Mary took from Biel still in her legs?

The question had come up already, toward the end of a hitherto jovial press day during which the two women had shared a microphone and found great enjoyment in teasing a European reporter so enamoured with Daddario that Winstead suggested he should ask his next question from one knee. But after pre-emptively and firmly declining any proposals of marriage, Daddario was asked more seriously if she had targeted Winstead because of the way that the Biel fight went down. ‘A little bit, I suppose. Most girls wouldn’t have hung in there the whole way like Mary did, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it left a mark, maybe more mentally than physically.’ Whatever else might have, it certainly appeared as though those words had stuck in Winstead’s mind, because she came back from the knockdown like someone determined to prove a point, her woozy aggression, although not enough to carry the round, enough for her to end it on top at the ropes, belting at Daddario’s guarded head.

Over the years it’s been easy for observers to be dismissive of Winstead; because her nicknames are MEW and Winnie, undoubtedly two of the less threatening noises in the animal kingdom; because her stable has more glamourous and headline-making talent on their roster; because the consensus is that in the ring she does everything well but nothing brilliantly; most of all because she rarely quits, and in not doing so allows for the existence of numerous slickly edited YouTube compilations showing her taking a beating. There was something of the same attitude here, a sense that the strikingly beautiful Daddario was the coming woman, the future in and out of the ring. In the fifth, as Alex found a home for that wide right hand in Winstead’s ribs, turning her in a suffering circle and putting tremors in her thighs, the air filled up with the screams of people anticipating a finish. ‘She had me damn near crippled with those hooks,’ Mary admitted afterward. ‘I could see in her eyes that she thought I was ready to go, but I was like, not yet missy, not this girl. I kept telling myself; get out of the round, get out of the round. When I shoved her at the end I wanted her to know she had a ton more work to do if she wanted to get me done.’

Dishevelled but determined, black bangs in her eyes, intense scowl firmly in place and a shiny sheen of effort on her torso; it has the narrative of a classic Winstead comeback built on the size of her heart, but that would be to undersell her, because it was a tactical change that altered the course of the fight; by standing in closer she took away the looping right hand that had punished her all night long and forced Alex into straight-armed trade. And beautiful Daddario may be, but as is the case with most women with her coloring, her body scuffs up as readily as a new pair of shoes. The earlier fighting had already set her torso invitingly aglow, and as they beat each other, she slowly turned pink, her engines overheating under pressure as Mary’s committed body shots first put Daddario down, then won her the fight, a series of undefended uppercuts to Alex’s chest finally bringing in the referee near the end of round seven.

‘I think I probably fell a little too in love with one punch,’ was Daddario’s far from dejected evaluation. ‘I knew I was hurting her with the right hook, but once she adjusted I needed to go to something different. It’s frustrating because of how close I was. She’s so tough, though.’ They hugged it out after the offical announcement and the atmosphere was convivial enough between the pair of them, although when asked about the churning assault on Daddario’s bra that had led to the stoppage, Mary’s tired, sweaty face lit up with mischief. ‘She made this fight about me having to answer questions – well I answered them. Now she’s gonna have to answer a few. Because it looked to me like she quit to the tits, and that’s not the kind of reputation you want to have.’

(Winstead beats Daddario TKO7)
