Minka Kelly vs. Scarlett Johansson
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE: "The thing about Minka," Scarlett says to anyone who'll listen, "Is, there's something missing. See, that's what people don't get. That's the REASON. That's the reason that she's never gotten to the top. And, what's missing is heart. She's fine when things go her way. She can look great when she gets on top of a girl. But, when things start going against her, it all gets to hard for her and she folds up. That's why she'll never be a champion...like ME."

"Scarlett is really tough...down at flyweight," says a hard-eyed Minka. "She loves it down there where she can bully smaller girls. But, like a typical bully, things change when she has to deal with somebody her own size. When she can't shove around girls smaller than her, she's nothing special at all. And she's not going to shove Minka Kelly around, because, if she tries, she knows she's going to end up on her back."

ROUND ONE:

No feeling out period in this one. The girls are after one another immediately, with Minka looking to work forward and Scarlett refusing to cede canvas. Kelly bangs out a left jab to try to control Johansson, put her in positions to square her up, but Scarlett not having any, showing excellent head and foot movement, slipping, sliding, angling. Kelly lands, but not flush, and Johansson does the same. She's chipping out of that southpaw stance, sneaking in rights to the head and saving the power hand, the left, for hooks to the body. Minka with a bit of a reach advantage, but having trouble making use of it as she tries to deal with Scarlett's unorthodox southpaw style. Both women have their moments, but neither can sustain any offense. Kelly lands the best punch of the round, a good, short right hook near the final bell. The first is close, but Minka gets a bit more done and takes the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Scarlett gets into rhythm early, causing all kinds of problems for Minka. She's stepping in lefty, getting in close, shouldering Minka off balance and hooking the body with the left. Kelly trying to get space with her jab, but Johansson able to get past her glove and keep working, thumping heavy left hands to Kelly's ribs and midsection, backing Minka up with short right hooks to the head. Minka forced to the defensive over and over again, trying to get something going in the counter, but Scarlett has everything rolling. She's getting to her spots and keeping Kelly off balance. Minka tries desperately to get back on the front foot, but Johansson keeps her on her heels, slowly consolidating her gains until, in the final minute, she's in total control. Kelly not hurt, but she is getting squared up regularly and worked hard to the body. When the bell sounds, it's clear Scarlett is on the board and the cards are even at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Scarlett keeps rolling. Johansson's found something that works and she's making plenty of hay with it. Again and again, she closes, crowding Kelly, then going to work in the phone booth. She shoulders Minka, bumps her, hooks the body, and, most dangerously, lands that solid left hook to the head. ScarJo's style at times confounds Minka. Kelly seems to be unable to adjust to what Johansson is doing. She's always late, always off balance, and taking a steady barrage of leather. Minka tries tying up, but ScarJo shoves her off or punches free by working the body. Nothing's working for Kelly and everything's working for Scarlett. When the bell finally sounds, Johansson bounces back to her corner with a 29-28 edge.

ROUND FOUR:

Minka adjusts. Kelly now gets space in a different way. She stops coming forward, instead giving ground and circling. It leaves Minka on her back foot, but it slows ScarJo's efforts to close and work inside. Kelly moves to her left, backing and circling away from Johansson's power, creating the distance she wants to jab with the left and then follow up with right hands. Scarlett finds herself taking leather on the way forward, but, she's able to match footwork pretty well and, when she does get to her spots, she's able to get work done. She goes body even more than in the previous round, and then she works upstairs, banging home that left hook. It's a good, close round, but Minka's work on the way in outweighs Scarlett's on the inside, and it's Kelly who gets the round to even the fight at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Minka adjusts again. She stops giving ground, but continues circling left. It allows her to stay on her front foot, and it makes all the difference. Scarlett again takes leather on the way in, but now it's heavy shot. Kelly is stopping Johansson in her tracks, leaving her an easy target in the middle distances. ScarJo can't close, can't get where she wants to be to work, and the result is that she gets very little done. Instead it's Minka stopping Scarlett again and again, then landing in combination as Johansson goes to the defensive. Kelly becomes more and more dominant as the round goes on, and, by the end, a frustrated Scarlett, in a high guard, is being backed up and lit up with heavy leather. At the bell, Kelly has taken control of the fight and, with a shutout round, the 48-47 lead.

ROUND SIX:

Scarlett ups the aggression. She keeps to that high guard and uses it to her advantage on the way in. She picks off and dodges Minka's jabs, keeps moving forward rather than being stopped, and that allows her to get to her spots again. ScarJo then gets to work, mostly downstairs. She thumps Kelly's body viciously, ripping leather to the ribs and midsection, lathering the lats, bringing grimaces of pain to Minka's lovely face. Now, Kelly's giving ground again, working off the back foot, but Scarlett keeps coming, squaring up, shouldering, backing the body...AND THEN JOHANSSON IS DOWN. Kelly lands a short right hook in close, catching Scarlett as she leans in to shoulder Minka back, and drops her to her rear. Scarlett more stunned than hurt, up at six, and the referee lets it continue after the mandatory. Minka gets plenty of work done in the last 30 seconds, as Scarlett backs up and covers up, but she doesn't hurt Johansson again. When the bell sounds, Scarlett is standing, but Minka now leads 58-55.

ROUND SEVEN:

Scarlett's legs look just fine, thank you, as the seventh begins. Johansson is, again, the aggressor, moving forward in that high guard, passing Minka's defenses, and going to work on her body. Kelly again taking leather amidships, grimacing in pain as several of the heavy shots land. Scarlett bumping, slugging, bullying. And then she's in full retreat! Kelly times another of those short rights to the chin and Scarlett stumbles backward, clearly hurt. Her legs hold her up this time, but she's wobbly and Minka piles on again, backing Johansson to the ropes and going to work with both hands. ScarJo covers up again as Kelly splits her gloves, snapping the head back, sending her stumbling along the ropes AND IT'S OVER! The referee has seen enough and bundles ScarJo to safety! Your winner by TKO7 is Minka Kelly!

AFTER:

"I told you," says a beaming Kelly. "She's a bully. You saw what she tried to do in there. She was all about getting in and brawling and shoving and trying to push me around. And, like I said, she might get away with that against a smaller girl, but she wasn't bullying me. She tried. And you saw what happened. She ended up out on her feet. Good luck later tonight, Emily. I'm watching. And waiting."
