Rachel McAdams (Foxfire Boxing) vs. Minka Kelly (Lookout Boxing)
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout! )

BEFORE:

Lots of things at work here. Rubber match between two accomplished, gorgeous bantams. Their first two fights, in 2009, went a combined total of five rounds with Kelly getting the upset in the first and McAdams blowing her away in the rematch. Then, there's the bantamweight titles. Rachel the presumed number one contender after sitting at two in the last rankings and beating the only girl in front of her, Grace Park, last month, but passed over for a shot. Minka frustrated by Claire Danes when she got her shot and now blocked from a title rematch after her own stablemate, Emily VanCamp, took the belts from Claire in August. A lot at stake here, and pride is right at the top of the list.

"Yes, I should be fighting VanCamp tonight, but they decided to duck me," says McAdams, eyes smoldering. "My consolation prize is Minka. And she's going to pay the price."

"I stopped Rachel before," says Kelly with a lovely smile. "Tonight, I'm going to demonstrate just how I did it."

ROUND ONE:

Early feeling-out process. Rachel, as always, showing good footwork. She's always in motion, in and out, side to side, creating angles. Minka more straight forward, weight on the left foot, hands high. As the seconds go by, Rachel begins finding her rhythm. A punch landed here and another there become combinations, then solid flurries. Minka not hurt, but being scored on. Kelly's offense much more limited. She gets one home on occasion, but most of her leather is off target, short or wide. Rachel, on the other hand, has the range, has the angles, and is touching Minka up at the bell. 10-9 McAdams after one.

ROUND TWO:

Kelly gets more aggressive, trying to square up Rachel and crowd her. McAdams so slick, so good with the feet, constantly bouncing and sliding. Kelly has to work hard to match, to line up the Canadian, but she's willing to put the effort in. McAdams' left very effective, sets up her right hand well. Minka's jab meant to range-find, and slowly, she begins to have success doing that. Once the left is on target, the rights follow, and Minka lands her best punches of the fight down the stretch. McAdams not hurt, not bothered, still scoring herself. At the bell, it's close, but Minka's done a bit more. All even at 19.

ROUND THREE:

More of the same. Kelly aggressive, working forward, Rachel with the excellent footwork, showing angles, scoring from good spots and making Minka work hard to square up her punches. McAdams has shown, over the years, that she can make a variety of styles work. She worked from the pocket the last time these two met, but that was five years ago. This time, she's showing Minka something she didn't expect, and it's paying off. Kelly's scoring when she gets off, but she's spending a lot of time trying to match footwork and square Rachel up. At the bell, it's close again, but McAdams gets the nod and the 29-28 lead.

ROUND FOUR:

Minka's taking some chances. She's committing on her punches now, looking to do serious damage. McAdams not ready for that kind of engagement, begins a war of movement. Now, we've got stalk and chase. Rachel circling for the first time, moving to her right, away from Minka's right hand. Kelly walking forward, looking to cut the ring, hooking the body occasionally with the left. When Minka brings Rachel to battle, Kelly gets off heavy, banging away as McAdams covers up, then circles away. Rachel knows what she's doing. She's giving this round away. Minka's putting a lot more leather home than she is. But she doesn't want to get into a fire-fight this early, and she's willing to play for time. At the bell, it's not close. A wide victory for Minka, and we're even at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Minka again right after Rachel. McAdams wants to circle and box, but she's not going to give away a second round. Instead, she stops, flurries, then circles away. Kelly in pursuit, stopped again and again by Rachel's volleys, but undeterred, continuing to work to cut the ring and penetrate. Rachel getting in rhythm, circle, stop, pop, circle. And DOWN SHE GOES! Minka times McAdams with a blistering right hand and Rachel goes straight down on her back! McAdams up at seven, but she's shabby. Rachel hurt and Minka knows it. Kelly all in immediately, backs McAdams to the ropes and has at it. It's glorious stuff from Minka, reefing right hands, pounding Rachel's body with left hooks to bring the guard down. The shell flies from both sides as Kelly's all in to get the stoppage. Rachel hanging on grimly, running clock, covering up, trying to clinch. Kelly a BOOMING right that sends Rachel staggering along the ropes and THE REF STEPS IN! With less than 30 seconds to go, he bundles McAdams to safety, and your winner by TKO5 is Minka Kelly!

AFTER:

Minka jubilant. She's just knocked off the top girl in the rankings and positioned herself for another shot at the gold as well as grabbing the rubber match against an old rival. "I knew I'd get her," she says, with that stunning smile. "Sooner or later, I was going to catch her, and, when I did, well, she wasn't getting up!" Minka having her moment, but it's a brief one. Stablemate Elisha Cuthbert, who's had many battles with both McAdams and Kelly on the mic at ringside doing color. And she's not about to let Minka wax poetic about how great she is. Cuthbert in the ring just as Kelly's warming up in the interview and business immediately picks up. Some screaming, a shove, and then it's GO time. The two stablemates quickly rolling around on the mat punching, kicking, a wild melee that goes on for several minutes until security can get things straightened out. The two are still screaming at one another as they're pulled away by the guards. Going to be an interesting day at Lookout! Boxing tomorrow. Then again, aren't they all?
