Troian Bellisario (Foxfire Boxing) vs. Ch.Emily VanCamp (Lookout Boxing)
Unified Bantamweight Title Bout
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

"It's no secret that Emily and I don't like one another," says Troi with a shake of the head that sends her lovely brunette locks bouncing. "So, I'm not going to stand here and say this isn't personal, because it IS. But, it's more than that. It's about who the best bantamweight in the world is. VanCamp's had those bragging rights long enough. Somebody needs to take them away from her...and I'm just the girl to do that."

"Troi is a skank, pure and simple," says Emily, eyes flashing. "This fight isn't about the titles for me, it's about punishing her, beating her up, pounding her until she can't take any more. It's about leaving her helpless on the mat, standing over her, looking down at her when she realizes who the better woman is. That's what this is about, and that's what I'm going to do."

ROUND ONE:

Emily, being a tall bantam at 5'8", is used to having a reach advantage, but not this time. Troi is nearly as tall, at 5'7", and actually has longer arms, and it's clear that reach is a problem for the champion from the opening bell. Bellisario loves the long poke, sticking out that jab, popping it in her opponent's face, slowing her down and pre-empting her with it, and that's exactly what she's able to do to the champion. Emily finds herself on the defensive despite her best efforts, as Troi uses the left jab to set up hard right hands. VanCamp is solid defensively as usual. She doesn't allow Bellisario to find the target easily, and she limits the brunette's flurries with good movement and counter punching, but it's Troi in charge from bell to bell and Bellisario with the 10-9 lead and a satisfied smirk after one.

ROUND TWO:

Troi right back to the jab, but Emily's not going to spend the fight on the end of her rival's punches. Instead, the champion begins taking some chances and walking through those left hands to close to the middle-distances she wants. Bellisario fires back when she does so, leading to some spirited exchanges, but, slowly, the champion begins to back the brunette up. Troi tries desperately to hold canvas, but Emily's got the range down and is determined to advance. Troi begins circling and slide-stepping to avoid being taken to the ropes, and, while those tactics are effective, they can't stop Emily's offensive. The champion's landing with both hands, touching Troi up again and again. When the bell sounds, it's the blonde with the smirk. She's won the round wide and tied the fight at 19.

ROUND THREE:

More of the same from EVC. Emily's a practical girl. When she finds something that works, she sticks with it, and working forward seems to be the solution to the problem of Troi's reach and accurate jab. Emily wants more body this time, clearly thinking about doing exactly what she said pre-fight, beating up the slimmer brunette until she can't take any additional punishment. Troi ships the leather well, however. Bellisario is a lot more solid than her frame suggests, as she's proven time and again. But, ship it she does. Emily's got her terms and has everything clicking now, working upstairs and then down, backing the brunette up, forcing her to circle and pop and spend too much time covering up and not enough putting punches together. At the bell, the champion has three words for the challenger. Just three. But three is all she needs. "All night long." Troi doesn't respond, simply turning and stomping back to her corner. Emily bounces back to hers, up 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Again, Emily's a practical girl. If it isn't broken, she isn't going to fix it, so she's right back at Troi as the fourth round starts. Again, Emily wants to grab canvas, to force Troi to retreat, to work her body, to keep her on her back foot. And, that's exactly what she's able to do for the first minute or so. Bellisario, however, thinks things ARE broken, and she's all about the repairs. It takes some time for her to start making them, but, when she does, they're effective. It starts with right-hand leads. Right-hand leads are tricky little buggers for right handed fighters. They're hard to pull off, because the punch takes an instant longer to land than the left, which, of course, is closer to the opponent. But, because right-hand leads aren't common and fighters are geared to expect the left, it's a punch you can sometimes surprise with. And, if you can land it, you can change the geometry in the ring, because, now, the opponent can't be working off the left. She doesn't know where the assault will start from. It can lead an opponent to be tentative and toss her over to the defensive. Even a very good opponent. Even a champion like Emily VanCamp. The first couple of right hand leads change everything. They catch VanCamp solid and disorganize her. Soon, it's the blonde backing up and covering up, never sure where the leather will be coming from. Her early lead quickly evaporates under effective barrages from the brunette challenger. By the end of the round, Troi is back in control and Emily's getting touched up. When the bell rings, there's an exchange of glares, then a smile from the brunette, who's evened the fight at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Winning fights is a difficult thing, and there aren't many rules on how to do it. Every fight is different, and something that works in one may not work in another. But, there's one truth about winning that transcends boxing and applies to all sports. To win big games or fights, you must play to WIN. Playing not to lose will usually have the opposite result. And that means to win a championship, you have to take chances, and, when you have an advantage over a champion, you have to press it. Troian Bellisario, for all her relative FCBA youth, is well aware of that truth, and she quickly begins demonstrating her familiarity with it as round five begins. Troi has her blonde discombobulated and now she's going to try to use that advantage to take her gold. Bellisario is now working forward for the first time in the fight, using the long poke to set up hard right hands, mixing in the odd right-hand lead to keep Emily off balance. VanCamp is on the defensive from the outset, working hard to stabilize her front with no success. Then. BAM. BLONDE GIRL DOWN! Troi sets it up with another right-hand lead. Snaps Emily's head back, follows with a left hook and then a BOOMING right to the jaw that knocks VanCamp to her back. Emily manages to beat the count, but is clearly hurt. Troi is all over her as action resumes. She batters the blonde back to the ropes and lets the leather fly. Emily is simply hanging on, trying to do enough to keep the ref at bay. And she manages to. Barely. At the bell, the blonde is scuffed. Unsteady as she heads back to her corner. The brunette has played to win, and she's up 48-46 at the halfway point.

ROUND SIX:

Now is the time to consolidate gains, and, again, for all her relative FCBA youth, the beautiful Troian knows it. She gets back to the terms she had in the first, using the long left jab to pepper Emily's face and set up right hands at range. VanCamp still unsteady, still can't count on those legs, making her an easier target. Troi works to set up something big, taking her points as she goes. Emily, on the defensive, works the counter, trying to put punches together and rally back into the fight. But, Troi is having none of it. Every blonde rally is brutally suppressed with heavy fire, and, as the round goes on, it's Bellisario working forward again and Emily giving ground. The champion is on her heels in the late going, and the challenger goes after her, battering her once again down the stretch, working her to the ropes and having at it. VanCamp is game. She counters when she can, but she's clearly taking the worst of it at the bell, which signals then end of a shutout victory for Troi and a 58-55 lead with four rounds to go.

ROUND SEVEN:

Troi knows she's taken control of the fight, but she's not about to get conservative now. She's right back to working forward, looking to put Emily away, if not literally, then on the scorecards. The champion's back is against the ropes, figuratively anyway, and, as Emily has shown, she's at her best in these kinds of situations. Add that together, and you get quite a round. Troi sets the tone early, very busy again with long lefts and follow up rights. Emily, though, knows she has to hold canvas now if she has any hope of turning this thing around, so she does. She endures the heavy fire and answers back in kind. It's heavy leather all around for almost three solid minutes, both women attacking mainly upstairs, but each doing some work to the body as well. On and on it goes, with not a single slow down, both women digging hard from start to finish and neither willing to back up a step. When the bell sounds, it's clear it was a close one, but the champion has managed to squeeze out the win and close to within two points, 67-65.

ROUND EIGHT:

VanCamp looking to build on last round, but Troi having none of it. Bellisario dials the aggression up even further, and effective aggression it is. The brunette is all on her front foot now and she's landing with power. Emily's trying to hold her ground, but she can't get it done. Instead, Troi slowly begins backing the champion up again. VanCamp fighting hard to staunch Bellisario's advance, but Troi simply putting too much shell on target to allow that to happen. Bellisario PUNISHING VanCamp as the round goes on and then BRUNETTE DOWN! Where did THAT come from? A sweet right-hand counter and Troi is dropped to her glutes! Bellisario is up at eight, legs a little wobbly, and ON COMES EMILY! VanCamp all about the finish now, battering the brunette back onto the ropes and going to work. Bellisario at first just covering up, but slowly shaking it off and beginning to counter effectively. Both women landing solid at the bell, but it's the knockdown that plays, and in a big way. The challenger was one minute from a three point lead with two rounds to go, and now finds herself in a dead-even fight with the cards reading 75-75.

ROUND NINE:

It's always better to have been there before. When you have, things slow down a little, seem a little intense, a little less, just a little less. There's a calm that comes with it, an understanding of what you need to do and what happens if you can get it done...and what happens if you can't. That experience pays dividends for Emily now, when she really needs it. She doesn't make the mistake less experienced girls might. She doesn't go all in to try to finish the brunette. Instead, she goes back to what worked earlier. She's willing to take Troi's jab to get to middle distances and work her body. Bellisario finds herself thrown to the defensive by this change in tactics, and VanCamp, having gotten the horse to a gallop, rides it. She lathers the lats, rips the ribs, punishes the midsection. She's got Troi covering up and backing up, trying to find a way to get the space she wants. Emily's crowding, though, getting her work done, taking the initiative away from the challenger, making her fight in closer and closer quarters, something the rangy Bellisario doesn't particularly like. There's nothing spectacular at work here. It's just good, effective boxing and body punishment. But it works. Emily's in charge from the opening second, and the shutout round put the champ in front 85-84, her first lead since the end of the third round.

ROUND TEN:

Troi hears it in the corner, hears that she needs this round, that she has to have it if she wants those belts. And she wants them. Bellisario charges off the stool and immediately puts Em on defense with several quick, accurate barrages, all set up by that long left and the occasional right-hand lead that continues to disorganize the champion. Troi is thinking big, but staying sound, advancing, forcing Emily back. And then she isn't. VanCamp again begins to hold ground, willing to trade despite the risks. Emily knows what's at stake here and has a pretty good idea of what's on those cards. The result is a repeat of round seven, a two-way fire-fight with both women landing accurate leather, stepping into their punches, and, at times, wondering what could be holding the other girl up. Back and forth they go until, slowly, Emily begins to get the better of things. Down the stretch, VanCamp is more effective, though Bellisario refuses to be suppressed and keeps firing back. At the bell there's a staredown and some shoving. The referee is in quickly. He can hold them apart, but he can't stop the jawing. The round has been a close one, with Troi in charge early and Emily late. It's all going to come down to the cards and both girls think they've won the thing...but, it's heartbreak for the challenger when the decision is announced. The final round has gone to Emily, and, by winning the close rounds, the champion has retained her belts. The referee remains between the two fighters after the decision is announced as the verbal barrages take over where the physical ones left off. It takes a while to get the ring cleared, but, when it is and the smoke has cleared away, the winner by UD10 and STILL bantamweight champion is Emily VanCamp!

AFTER:

"Like I said before the fight, Troi is a skank," says a tight-lipped Emily. "She landed a lucky punch once and she thought she had me, but I knew I had plenty of time left, and I knew when the going got tough, she couldn't handle it. That's the difference between her and me. One of us is a champion, and the other isn't good enough!"
