Kat Dennings (Front Street) vs. Elodie Frege (Latin Union)
Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!

BEFORE:

Dennings not her usual playful self in the run up to the fight. This is serious business for her and she knows it. "This hasn't been a great year for me," she says, shaking her head. "I've been trying to be too fine, too slick. That stops tonight. I'm going out there on a mission, to take her out of there. And that's exactly what I'm going to do."

Elodie also serious, as usual. "It's a big fight for me," she says, in that lovely accent. "People remember how I beat Alba, but it's time to follow that up. I have to prove I can handle these hard-hitting bantams, and, that's what I'll do tonight."

ROUND ONE:

There aren't going to be any strategic surprises here, and that's made clear right away. Dennings wants to pressure, and Frege wants to work from the pocket. That being the case, both girls are going to get their wish. Frege wastes little time working her way back to the ropes and setting up her defense-and-counter game. Dennings immediately lays siege. Kat's watched video, though. She's not getting wild, not going all in, not trying to pound out a first round KO. No, she's careful. Deliberate. Because she knows how dangerous and effective Frege's pocket is. Dennings works hard. She uses the jab. She sets up her rights. She gets her gloves back, limiting Elodie's chances to counter. Frege's plenty effective, too. Picking off a lot of Kat's offerings and scoring with her own. Good round for both fighters, but Kat gets more done and leads 10-9 when it's over.

ROUND TWO:

Elodie getting a rhythm down. She's so smooth and slick. All the head and shoulder movement, the gloves blocking Kat's leather, creating openings for counters. The French beauty has gone from try-hard crowd favorite to a legitimately dangerous bantam, and it's the class that she's developed that's done it. Frege's boxing is as pretty as the girl herself, and it's a contrast to Dennings, who can box, too, but is more functional, like mentor Neve Campbell and Hall of Famer Dani Fishel. Kat's about putting leather to you and grinding you down. Elodie's about the sweetest parts of the science, and in round two she's too sweet by far, always a step ahead of Kat and easily out-pointing her to even things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Things get grim very quickly. Dennings isn't having any more of this boxing display Elodie wants to put on. She steps to, gets toe to toe, and starts banging body. Neve Campbell almost never smiles anywhere within a square mile of a ring, but the corners of the mouth turn upward slightly as she watches her protégé bang tummy and ribs. Frege responds, and in kind. She'll work body, too. What she won't do is bring down the guard and allow Kat to turn this into a slugfest. Instead, she ships the punishment, deals out her own, and looks for the occasional opening to land a good, sharp right to the head. For three minutes, the fighters grind, and, when the bell rings, it's close, but the round goes to the girl better suited to grinding. Kat's back on top 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Dennings back to work, looking to reduce Frege. Elodie moving more now, sliding along the ropes, making Kat reset and looking to put flurries together as she does. It's an effective adjustment for the most part, and has Elodie getting the majority of the work done, until Dennings follows a nasty hook to the belly with an uppercut to the chin that split's the French beauty's gloves and snaps back her head. Frege's legs shimmy. They hold up, but Kat's seen all she needs to see. Caution isn't thrown to the wind, but Dennings does begin committing reserves. She's after Elodie in a big way, pounding away with heavy leather to both head and body, looking for the combination that will finish her. Frege, however, made of stern stuff, refuses to go. She counters in spots, contests Kat bitterly. Dennings doesn't get to romp to the finish, but she's definitely in firm control when it comes, making it 39-37 on the cards.

ROUND FIVE:

Determination has always been the name of Frege's game. Anyone who remembers the fight against Pink knows that. And it's determination that's on full display in the fifth. Kat wants to ice this thing away, but Frege's having none of it. She's hurting to the body, but the mind is plenty willing, and so are the fists. She's perfect in the pocket, just perfect, as she rolls and twists, blocks and parries, then counters strongly, actually backing up Dennings a couple of times. Kat's also determined, sticking with the game plan of the body work. She's thumping away inside, willing to take those hard counters in exchange for the pounds of flesh she's pinking up over the French beauty's belly and ribs. It's nasty stuff, but, when it's over, Elodie's stabilized things with a narrow victory. It's now 48-47 and anyone's fight.

ROUND SIX:

Kat back to work and again meeting determined resistance. Frege getting back into that second round rhythm, all the moving parts working together perfectly. Kat's punches being avoided and the resultant openings turning into points as Frege keyholes her counters through them. The Frenchwoman stopped her rival's offensive in the last round and now is slowly turning the tide with sharp combinations that stop Kat and force her to cover up. What happens next is auditory as much as it's visual. Those at ringside and those several rows away clearly hear the WHACK. It's Dennings' left hook burying itself in Frege's breadbasket. Elodie begins to bunch up with a gasp, and then the follow on right arrives. Sickening head swivel. Down goes Frege. She folds forward and drops face first to the mat, hands trapped beneath her. Dennings walks to a neutral corner. She's in no hurry to get the count started. The referee can count all night. He stops at ten, the French beauty still unmoving. Your winner by KO6 in brutal fashion is Kat "The Rack" Dennings.

AFTER: Frege brought around in stages. Dennings and Front Street corner wander over to check on her. Frege rises with help and hugs are exchanged. There's no animosity here. It was just business. "She's not easy," says Kat, smiling for the first time all night in the aftermath. "She's slick and tricky, and, if you aren't careful, she can mesmerize you with all that stuff, pick you apart, bust you up, take seven or eight rounds from you. But, like I said, I'm done trying to be too fine and too perfect with everything. I'm going out there to fight my fight. I'm going to get on you and stay on you, and sooner or later, I'm going to get TO you. What you just saw tonight was the beginning of something. Watch and see how it ends. I'll give you a hint. There's gold involved."
