Laura Vandervoor (Foxfire Boxing)  vs. Claire Holt (Odds and Ends Fight Studio)
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Laura not at all cowed by Holt and her win percentage in prefight. "Holt's supposed to be this unbeatable phenom. Well, I've seen phenoms come and I've seen them go, and I've kicked most of their butts. And Claire's next in line."

Claire respectful of the dangerous veteran Vandervoort. "She's a good test for me, no question about it. Laura's very good, very talented. But, I'm better. I know it. And I'll prove it."

ROUND ONE:

Claire looking to jab and work forward, land some heavy shot early, but Laura has a different plan. She wants to box at range, use the long left hand to create distance, then use her quickness and athleticism to beat her fellow blonde to punches. And that's exactly what she does. Claire a taller bantam, not used to having reach used against her. But Laura's a bit taller, a bit longer, and she's able to use that length to great effect. Claire not hurt. Not scuffed. But she IS getting touched up, and in a major way. As the round goes on, Claire can't find answers. Can't get on target. And can't stop Laura's offense. When the bell rings to end the first, the cards read: Vandy-10, Holt-9.

ROUND TWO:

Claire not having any more of this ranged warfare, as it clearly isn't going to work for her. Instead, she gets the guard higher and works forward, closing with Laura and working body. But Vandervoort is not a girl who'll shrink from that kind of a fight. Laura responds in kind, and we have a completely different kind of round. This is grim, grinding stuff, banging away on the inside as two beautiful blondes work to reduce two beautiful bodies. There's some work upstairs, too, of course, but it's mainly leather against meat. Thump. Bang. Thump. Bang. For three minutes. When it ends, both girls' bodies are pinking up. And Holt's juuuussst managed to even things up at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Claire wants to come forward again, but Laura changing tactics, showing more movement, circling, forcing Holt to stalk. Claire willing, but taking fire as she does so. Vandy leading a merry chase and then she's not. It's a rifling right hand from Holt that rocks Laura's world, sending her wobbling backward and getting the scent of blood all up in Holt's water. Claire doesn't quite go all in, but there aren't many chips still sitting in her pile. She wants Laura finished, and she wants her finished NOW. Vandervoort backed into the ropes and savaged. Beating quickly gets to the point where the referee is preparing to jump in, but Laura hangs on. When the bell rings, she's still wobbly and plenty scuffed, but she's standing, down 29-28, but not out.

ROUND FOUR:

Claire still wants to finish, and Laura doesn't have the legs to go a-circlin', so we're back to the terms of round two, Claire coming forward and Laura refusing to cede the ground. It gets nasty right away with both girls again grinding body, Laura spending most of her time down there, while Claire tries to work more on top, still looking for the combination that will turn out Laura's lights. Vandervoort, however, shakes off more and more of last round's beating as the fourth goes on. And, slowly, she begins to get the better of Holt inside, working her way up and backing Claire up with a series of good flurries in the final seconds. It's another close round, but it's Laura, and we're all even at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Laura back to moving. The legs have returned and she wants to circle and force Holt to work to close. Claire, again, quite willing to do the work. Guard high, head and feet moving. Laura mostly gets the space she's looking for and is able to score on Holt as she moves forward, but, when Claire gets to her spots, she makes no mistakes, drawing Lovely Laura V into prolonged exchanges, exchanges where Holt always seems to get the first punch and the last punch home. Nobody's hurt. Everybody's scoring. But Holt's scoring more. So, when the bell rings, it's Claire's round, and Claire's 48-47 lead.

ROUND SIX:

It's been nip and tuck the whole fight, and, with two girls this talented, that's no surprise. This round sees a continuation of the strategies of the fifth. Again, it's Laura using the feet and Claire trying to close, but Vandervoort's beginning to time Claire and disrupt her. Holt works to close, but often finds her pursuit stopped cold by a barrage of leather. Vandervoort moves the way she does everything, beautifully, and she frustrates Holt again and again by picking her up just as she's about to get into punching position. Claire remains determined. She doesn't slow down. But she doesn't get much work done, either. Laura, on the other hand, has her best round of the fight, easily  outscoring Holt to even things again at 57.

ROUND SEVEN:

If it isn't broken, Laura's not about trying to fix it. The lovely blonde goes right back to the legs to start the seventh, and Holt is once again forced into a position of trying to stalk and cut, while Vandervoort touches her up again. And, then, BAM. All that stuff ends in one second. A whistling right hand that comes out of nowhere and DOWN GOES LAURA! The lovely blonde blown right to her back off that perfectly-timed cross. Vandervoort down and stunned. Begins to move midway through the count. Gets to her hands and knees. Begins to rise, and crumples back to the mat face down. Holt leaps in the air in triumph. It's OVER! And your winner by KO7 is Claire Holt!

AFTER:

Claire full of respect for her rival in the post fight. "She's very good, and you saw that tonight. She's one of the best bantams on the planet, no doubt. But, she's not as good as I am, and you saw THAT tonight, too. It's about time Claire Holt gets another shot at those title belts. Are you listening, Emily? How about you, Lizzie? It's time. Let's do this! You and me for the bantam gold!"
