MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD (FOXFIRE BOXING) VS KATIE HOLMES (MIRAGE BOXING)
Results: Lookout  Writing: Archer

Before:  “I think Katie Holmes is a legitimate contender,” Mary insists to the press, “that’s why I am fighting her. I resent the people who think I’m just looking for a cheap win. That is very unfair to Katie as well. I hope her feelings aren’t hurt by these insinuations. All I want is a credible opponent I haven’t fought before and this is Katie Holmes. I look forward to fighting her.”

Katie Holmes blunt in her response: “So what if she thinks I am an easy win? I’m getting a fight and I’m a better fighter than she realizes. I’ve been studying her tapes. There is a reason she is 1-3 and I am to benefit from the research. I know you want a win, Mary, but you aren’t getting it from me.”

Katie shoots Mary a defiant smile. Mary leans on one hand and just smiles sweetly.

“Love you too, Katie,” she says, “and we’ll just see how the fight goes.”

Before: Katie in a dark green with black trim dance leotard. Dark green gloves, black boots with green laces. Mary in royal blue dance leotard with white belt around the waist. Royal blue boots with white laces and blue gloves.  Both fighters have their hair pulled back in ponytail, green ribbon tying Katie’s, blue ribbon securing Mary’s hair. Fighters cool during ring instructions, customary order to “touch gloves” turns into an unexpected test of strength as both push fierce trying to make the other step back. Referee was to intervene and warn both girls they had better follow the rules.

R1: Katie and Mary exchange a flurry of punches early on. Mary shows some nice footwork moving in unexpected ways to fluster Katie and allow Mary to slam some good punches into Katie’s flank just under the elbows of her raised guard. Katie not liking that, trying to circle on Mary but not able to execute as well., Mary with some lancing shots to Katie’s jaw and sending tremors down her legs. Mary starting to smile, she seems to be enjoying herself and Katie scowls, though she doesn’t seem able to counter effectively. Mary takes the round wide.

R2: Katie makes a point early, she lets Mary come in on her, then she does a bobbing feint and then rises to slide an overhand right over Katie’s gloves to smack into the middle of Mary’s face, Mary looks startled and then Katie buries her left hook into the Winstead gut doubling her over with a loud gasp. Katie uses her left shoulder to push Mary back while hammering her head with the right. Mary stumbling back in confusion and Katie coming after her with wide swinging lefts and rights, Mary able to duck these shots or blunt them with her shoulder. She retreats trying to regroup, Finally gets her jab going and touching up Katie’s face to make her step back. Fierce flurry of punching as the two move all around the ring for the final minute. Katie catches Mary upside the head just as the bell rings, causing the Foxfire brunette to stumble forward on trembling legs. Katie reaches out with the palms of her gloves to push Mary back with a cold look. Mary tottering, keeps her balance, but crowd seems to find this funny and hoots. Mary not amused and gives Katie a murderous look. Katie gives her a sneering look in response.

R3: Mary’s steamed by that last round, but she keeps her fury under control and harnesses it into a thundering attack on Katie at the outset of this round. Katie struggling to cope with the bombardment takes head swiveling punches to the head and jaw, then as she causes her gloves to protect herself high, her body comes under attack. Katie shows some skill in fighting as she backs up, but her jabs and counters can’t seem to slow Mary down. Mary trying to get Katie pinned to the ropes, but Katie moving too quick for this to happen and Mary has to settle for scoring a lot of points to win the round easily. Mary still giving Katie a baleful look and Katie still responding with defiance.

R4: Mary on the vengeful offensive again this round, but Katie meeting the threat with strong counters. Mary’s beginning to discolor from the R2 punches Katie landed, but now Katie again marking up Winstead faces with fresh leather. Mary trying to shake this off in her determination to get to her opponent. Back and forth action steady throughout the round, but Mary gradually landed more to Katie’s ribs and midsection, making Katie hunch up and then Mary firing shots as Katie’s head (mainly off the forehead, a small cut opens at the hairline from these blows and a little trickle of red drips down). Katie still fighting, but just can’t seem to land as well on Mary and the round goes onto the cards a close Winstead stanza.

R5: Katie showing no intimidation as she fights off Mary’s latest surge at her. Katie trying some slick moves and manages to clip Mary’s chin repeatedly. Mary countering to Katie’s body once again, but can’t seem to discourage her determined opponent. Two finish up the round toe to toe and slugging away at close range. They are both taking a lot of punches, but neither is backing down.

R6: Mary must have been impressed with Katie’s slick footwork in R5 because she shows some herself early this this round, drawing Katie off balance and working her ribs with strong punches that are making Katie wince. As they circle each other, another Mary feint draws Katie off balance and Mary just buries her right into Katie’s gut. Katie caught square, folds up around the right and stands there swaying as Mary steps back and hammers a right uppercut into Katie’s chin. Katie falls backwards and sprawls on her back. Katie rolls over as referee starts to count and slowly forces herself to rise. Referee checks her out, looking into her eyes as Katie is mumbling she is fine and wants to go on. The official decides to let her have her way and waves Mary back in. Mary quickly drives Katie to the ropes with heavy shelling as Katie tries to slide away. Mary finally cuts her off and leans in with her left shoulder to pin Katie while pounding her head and upper chest with her right hand. Katie’s gloves pawing the air uselessly as referee jumps in to force a break. As he does, Katie sags onto the official and he quickly realizes she is out on her feet. The referee calls for the bell to end bout as Mary stands back, arms folded under her chest with a very pleased look on her face.
The Winner: Mary Elizabeth Winstead (TKO6).

After: Mary talks happily to the press about “…I told you she was a credible opponent. Yes, she irritated me at times, but she served her purpose tonight. I’m 2-3 now and ready to get back to .500. As for why I didn’t walk her?  She did make me mad, but that really wasn’t enough to get me to add to humiliation to my beating her. So I decided to let her leave with her dignity intact and I’ll be moving on to my next opponent.”

Katie later tells press: “I was disappointed. I think I proved I could stay with her. She got to me in the 6th and once she had me, she didn’t let up. I shouldn’t have allowed myself to get caught like that. Her not walking me?  Frankly, I would have walked her. I think it was just her way of trying to put me down: I wasn’t good enough for’ Mary the Great’ to walk.  You can be sure that’s something I will remember in the future.”

Mary Winstead back in the winner’s column now and looking ahead. Katie Holmes had her moments, but not enough of them. Observers do look forward to seeing what comes next for these two.
