Emily VanCamp (Lookout Boxing) vs. Elizabeth Olsen (Ginny's Academy)
Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!

BEFORE:

Some grudging respect on both sides in the run up. Olsen compliments VanCamp a lot. "She's obviously very good," says Lizzie. "You saw how it came together for her in her comeback, how quickly she rose through the rankings and claimed the title. And now she has it again. But, let's keep in mind what happened the last time we fought. And who WON."

Emily also makes with the compliments. "You can't take her lightly," says the champion with a shake of the head. "And, maybe that's what I did last time. Well, I won't make that mistake again. My title is on the line. And, when we're done, it will still be MY title."

ROUND ONE:

Lizzie goes to the jab immediately, and Emily has to be feeling some deja vu. Here she is against another rangy bantam who has as much or more reach than she does, just as she was last month against Troi Bellisario. This isn't normally how it goes for Em, who's tall for the weight, and the discomfort is apparent despite her recent experiences with Troi. Lizzie's able to get the jab on target and work from it. She drops rights. She hooks the body. She forces the champ to cover up. Em quickly cedes the lead and begins boxing counter. She has her moments doing it, but only moments. Mostly, it's Elizabeth who's getting work done, and, when the bell rings, there's no question Olsen has claimed the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Olsen right back to the left hand. VanCamp trying to adjust, trying to find ways to get to the middle distances she likes and get to work. Again, she has some success, but not as much as she'd like. Lizzie's got the range in that flat-footed stance. She's landing solid shot as Em tries to get off the end of those punches. When she pulls the trick, VanCamp is able to put things together and get off first on Olsen. But, Lizzie doesn't allow it often. She's mostly able to thwart the champion's efforts and bang some leather to the face while she's at it. The second is a more competitive round, but the result is the same. Olsen has the terms she wants, and she's getting the better of things, leading 20-18.

ROUND THREE:

Math. Ain't it a b###h. Emily has built a reputation for being able to come from behind. But, math. It's often said that a fighter "gives away" the first round while trying to feel out an opponent, trying to see what will and will not work against her. Well, "giving" away one of ten rounds, ten percent of your scoring opportunities, is never a good idea, but, if you happen to lose the initial round by doing recon, you aren't exactly behind the eight ball. Absent something big, you only need win 55 percent of the remaining rounds to even things up and at least force OT, and, for a good fighter, 55 isn't anything to worry about, as she's probably won closer to 60 percent of the rounds in her career. Lose the second round, too, however, and math starts to get cranky. Now, you need to win 62 percent of your rounds just to tie things up. That's trickier. But, it's when you lose that third round that math goes into "b###h Mode". At that point, you need to win
over 70 percent of the rounds just to get even. That is not an eight ball you want to be behind. And, so it is for Champ VanCamp in the third. Lizzie still landing with that left, still dropping in the rights, still scoring from range, and Emily, having been stopped by Olsen once before, is well aware of the danger of her power. That awareness led to her caution in the first two rounds. But, by round three, Emily knows she can't win this fight on terms so favorable to Olsen, so it's time to change the script and up the ante. VanCamp raises her guard and works forward through Olsen's fire. She catches plenty of leather for it, but, when she get to those middle distances she likes, she's able to respond in kind. The round turns into a sort of brutal ballet, Emily moving forward taking fire, then landing flurries forcing Lizzie back to the distances she likes. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Until the bell. By that point, both girls have scored plenty, but the champ has scored more. She forced a Midol down math's throat, and cuts the lead to 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

The pattern of round three repeats itself in the following stanza. Olsen fights for distance, VanCamp fights to close. Both are effective, and both land plenty of leather. Both girls begin to scuff up as a result of the hard, accurate fire both are being forced to deal with. But, neither show any give up. Both remain determined to impose her will on the other. And, slowly, as the round goes on, the champion is able to begin to do so. She's timing Olsen better, getting to her spots more often, and landing harder stuff when she does so. By round's end, Lizzie is in strategic retreat, getting touched up and backed up as VanCamp evens things up at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Olsen comes out firing, all about slowing Emily down and getting the initiative back. Emily finds herself backed up with Olsen actually coming forward for the first time in the fight. And then, BAM! VanCamp walks her rival into a short right hook that send Olsen staggering backward. Em quickly pounces on her wounded rival, showing that killer instinct she's become known for. She's all over Lizzie, backing her into the ropes and brutalizing her. There's body work, hard shots to the head, and even a little random work to the rack. Olsen hangs in, clinches, covers, does enough to keep the referee from stopping the thing, but Emily gets her clean up and leads 48-47 at the halfway point.

ROUND SIX:

Olsen careful as the round begins. Still doesn't have the legs all the way back yet, and VanCamp quickly notices. Emily begins shoving chips into the middle of the table with both hands. She's after Lizzie, walking through her jabs to close and slug and DOWN GOES OLSEN! A left hook sends Elizabeth to her knees! VanCamp veritably BOUNCES to a neutral corner, but the celebration gets rained on as Olsen gets back to her feet and the referee allows the fight to continue. ON COMES EMILY. It may not be over now, but she's all in to make that happen immediately if not sooner. Again, Olsen's backed to the ropes and brutalized. VanCamp is emptying the magazines despite the fact that there are four more rounds scheduled. The time for the reserves is now, and she sends them all in. Again, Lizzie holds on grimly, clinching and covering and DOWN SHE GOES! A right hand sends Olsen crashing to the mat, leaving her on her right side parallel to the ropes. Again, VanCamp skips back to her corner, and, this time, there's not a cloud in the sky. The count passes Olsen by with Lizzie still poleaxed on the mat. And your winner by KO6 and STILL Unified Bantamweight Champion, Emily VanCamp!

AFTER:

VanCamp exultant in the post-fight. Clearly, this fight meant more to her than she was letting on. It wasn't just about defending her title, it was about getting a win back against a type rival. "I feel really good, you know?" the champion says with a lovely smile. "There was a lot of pressure, mostly pressure I put on myself. I remember what happened the last time, and I didn't want a girl like that going up 2-0 on me, claiming to be the best young bantam in the world, when everyone knows that's me! I couldn't have that. I had to get her out of there tonight, and I wasn't leaving that ring until I'd done it."
