TESS VALMORE

PANETTIERE/ CYRUS The first fight in the flyweight tournament turned into an upset. Panettiere was cruising as expected taking four of the first five. Cyrus came on the sixth, hurting Panettiere. In the sixth, Cyrus put Hayden on the canvas for a five count. In the eighth, Cyrus finished in grand style when she caught Panettiere with a left-right that put Panettiere down for the count. This was Cyrus’s third upset win in her last five fights. I will definitely have to take her more seriously

SONG/ SHAHI The second flyweight tournament fight and the second upset. Shahi was ahead at the end of five, having Song in bad shape in the fourth and fifth rounds. As in the previous fight, the underdog started a comeback in the sixth. She gave Shahi a healthy dish of punishment in the seventh and then finished off the ex-champ in the eighth with blazing right uppercut

HALE/ LOWNDES Well wouldn’t you know it. I predicted Hale would win in an upset. It didn’t happen. As in the two previous bouts, the eventual loser was ahead at the halfway point having come close to winning by a fourth round KO, but Lowndes barely beat the count and finished the round on her feet. Lowndes evened up the bout by winning the sixth. In the seventh, Lowndes landed a left to Hale’s stomach and then a right to the jaw and the fight was over with Hale being counted out

PORTMAN/ BILSON Can you believe it. I finally got one right tonight. It was classic Portman in the first two rounds as she built up an early lead. That lead disappeared in the next two rounds as Bilson came back to win both. In the fifth. Portman dropped Bilson with a right hand counter. Bilson managed to get to her feet, but Portman mauled her along the ropes and the referee stepped in and stopped the fight giving Portman a KO5

BENSON/ KEEGAN Keegan was looking good taking three of the first four. That was her high point. In the fifth, Benson floored Keegan but Keegan managed to finish the round. Keegan didn’t manage to finish the sixth. Benson landed a right to the body, a left to the chin and a pair of hooks the left Keegan being counted out

SCERBO/ OSMENT Just so everyone knows, Scerbo is my BFF and I was rooting for her. Surprisingly Osment. in her debut, had the lead at the end of three. The third round, however, would be the last round that Osment would win. It was classic Scerbo who ended Osment’s debut with a scorching right in the seventh. Scerbo KO7

HOLLAND/ RICKARDS Holland got off to a good start winning two of the first three. In the fourth. Rickards started concentrating on Holland’s arms and shoulders with good effect. By the fifth. Holland could hardly lift her arms and had no power left in her punches. Rickards ended the fight when she landed a right uppercut that put Holland down in dreamland

REED/ DOBREV A good fight while it lasted. I had the two even at the end of three with the first round a draw, Dobrev taking the second and Reed the third. The fourth however. was all Dobrev who simply hammered Reed all over the ring before ending the bout with a right cross Dobrev KO4

PORTMAN/ LOWNDES A Second round flyweight tournament bout. The fight looked like another Portman classic. Lowndes took the first round but then Portman rolled off the next five to have a huge lead going into the seventh. In that round, Lowndes caught Portman with a couple hooks to the solar plexus and then a right to the jaw that put Portman on the canvas. Portman managed to get to her feet and finish the round. It looked like the eighth was going to be competitive until Lowndes caught Natalie with a vicious right to the chin that send Portman down for the count

SONG/ CYRUS A Second round flyweight tournament bout. Cyrus was the more aggressive of the two which paid off with Cyrus having the lead at the end of five. Song decided to get aggressive in the sixth. Big mistake Cyrus landed power punches to the head and body that put Song down. Song managed to get to her feet and finish the round but she had nothing left. In the seventh, Cyrus pounded Song at will until the referee stopped the fight.

AGUILERA/ FISHEL I didn’t give Aquilera much chance in this fight. She did better than I expected managing to take two of the first four rounds. In the fifth, Fishel played patty cake with Aquilera’s chin that put her on the floor. In the sixth, Fishel played a little more patty cake with Aquilera’s chin and she didn’t get up as the referee, seeing her sleeping in sitting position, waved the bout off.

WAGNER/ SMULDERS I realize that Wagner got some stern lectures from her corner especially after the third round, which by the way was the only round that I had Smulders winning. Jill used her legs to move and sharp shoot at Smulders. In the sixth, the two finally went toe to toe and it went Wagner’s way as a right to Cobie’s midsection and a left to the chin put an end to the bout

MITCHELL/ WOODLEY Woodley did better in her debut fight than I expected. That doesn’t mean she won, just better than I expected. Actually, the fight was even at the end of seven with each winning three rounds and one declared a draw. Mitchell finally got going for real in the eighth when she decked Woodley for a nine count. In the ninth, Woodley tried to be aggressive but was met with a flurry of rights and lefts to the chin that ended with her being counted out

MOORE/ DECKER This was a good, close, hard punching bout. The two were even at the end of four. even at six and even at eight. In the ninth, the two stood toe to toe exchanging heavy punches. The exchange went Moore’s way when she landed a huge right that put Decker on the canvas unable to rise as the count passed her by

RIGHETTI/ O’KEEFE I thought this would be a fight for Righetti to get some rounds under her belt after a long layoff. She was in against a clearly mismatched opponent. At least that was the way it seemed. Surprisingly. O’Keefe took four of the first five rounds. In the sixth O’Keefe would go down and then so would Righetti. Righetti finally got going in the seventh, controlling her opponent. She continued in the eighth, this time putting some real harm on O’Keefe. By the beginning of the ninth, O’Keefe was pretty shabby and Righetti just pounded her into a defenseless state and the fight was stopped. We will consider Righetti performance a result of rust. She did come on in the latter rounds and looked quite good. but we will hardly call her performance against an over matched opponent a “stunning comeback” That said, I still think She IS P4P best in the FCBA

VANCAMP/ HOLT For the bantam title and one of the better fights of the night. The fight was even at the end of four The fifth was quite a round with Holt going down and then putting VanCamp on the canvas to take the lead in the bout. Holt increased her lead by winning the sixth. VanCamp came back to take the seventh and then took the lead by decking Holt in the eighth. Holt made the fight even again when she won the ninth. In the tenth, Holt floored VanCamp with a right hook. VanCamp made it to her feet only to be pounded along the ropes until the referee stopped the fight with just 30 seconds to go. At that point Holt had the fight won anyway. Holt is the new bantam champ

STRAHOVSKI/ DURANCE A surprise match for the lightweight crown. I was expected to see Yustman in this fight. Durance, in her fight fight in over a year, started off quite well by flooring Strahovski in the first. Note, she didn’t finish her and that was the story of this bout. Towards the end of the second it was Durance that went down. In the third. the champ used Durance’s head for a punching bag until the Durance laid senseless on the canvas. Great win for Strahovski who seems to have cemented her claim to be the lightweight heir of the GOAT and she also has a claim to the P4P title

CYRUS/ LOWNDES OK, I am thinking before this fight, that this is really funny. There is no way that Cyrus can be the flyweight champ. Guess what. Cyrus is the new flyweight champ It wasn’t easy as this was a fine fight. All looked rosy for Lowndes at the end of five as she had won four of the first five and decked Cyrus in the fourth. Cyrus started her comeback by taking the next three rounds and putting Lowndes on the canvas in the seventh. Lowndes took the lead by winning round nine. The final round went to Cyrus who managed to send VanCamp to the floor. Five rounds each with Cyrus getting two knockdowns to Lowndes one therefore winning the title.
