Claire Holt vs. Emily VanCamp
Bantamweight Title
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

"I wondered when I'd get another chance like this," says Claire with a gorgeous smile. "Maybe the title shot against Munn DID come too fast, like people say. But, I'm ready now, and tonight the result is going to be different."

"I've been asked why I chose Holt over girls like Munn and Wilde," says a hard-eyed Emily. "It's pretty simple. This girl needs to be dealt with. All we hear about in this division is how she's some kind of phenom. Won her first seven fights. Got a title shot in her eighth. 11-2 career. Finds ways to win. Blah. Blah. Blah. She needs dealt with. And, tonight, she GETS dealt with."

ROUND ONE:

VanCamp wastes no time getting aggressive. She wants to work behind the left jab, close, bang. Claire ok with that. She's got the gloves high, bobbing and weaving, slipping and sliding, making the champ work to square. Holt willing to go counter, letting Em jab and try to follow, then using those openings to fire back. It's good, classy stuff from VanCamp and effective retorts from Claire. Both girls doing a lot of work, but both solid defensively. Neither scoring a high percentage as leather is dodged, blocked, slipped, caught on shoulders and gloves. What gets through is effective for both fighters, but both getting a little frustrated as the round goes on. In the final minute, Holt starts to get a bit of rhythm in the counter, and it makes all the difference. Claire secures the round with some late flurries and leads 10-9.

ROUND TWO:

VanCamp makes with the aggression again, but, this time she adjusts a bit. She gets that jab out there, sticks with it, double and triple pops it, keeps Claire on the defensive. Em then looks to keyhole rights. But she's judicious with them, only firing when she's got the opening, all in the name of giving Holt fewer opportunities to counter. It works. Very, very well. Claire spends a lot of time waiting and covering up. She's not getting off, and, as a result, she starts forcing stuff, which gives VanCamp the openings she wants for the right hands. VanCamp begin landing solid and backing Claire up. Emily advances slowly, always using that left to pop pop pop, suppressing the counter fire from her fellow blonde. When the bell sounds, the champion has taken control of the fight and evened the scorecards at 19.

ROUND THREE:

VanCamp quickly put this thing on cruise control. She's found the answers, got a game plan that works, and, as usual, she executes it to perfection. It all starts with that left jab, pop pop pop. Holt can't seem to avoid getting it in her pretty face. It stops her, forces her to cover up, keeps her at the range where Emily wants to operate, and sets up right hands, good, solid right hands that smite Holt, back her up, test her legs. And, about midway through the round, those legs are nearly found wanting. Holt is rocked by a solid right that sends her wobbling backward. The champion, like a lioness, begins to stalk. It's still all about the left. It's DRILLIING home now, peppering Holt, opening her up for right hands that send her to the ropes. Emily then goes almost all in. It's sound stuff, of course, but there's no question the champ wants to end this here. And she nearly does. The referee seems about to leap in more than once, but Holt does just enough to survive the round. It's a shutout for EVC, however, and the champ now leads 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

VanCamp now looking for the kill on her blooded opponent. The left hand again finding its mark. Emily less judicious with the rights now. Looking for the big one that turns out the lights. And a big one lands. On the champion's chin. VanCamp is ROCKED by a nasty right-hand counter. She stumbles, nearly goes down. And Holt is ALL IN IMMEDIATELY. The challenger is all over the champion, winging away with both hands, driving Emily before her, trapping her on the ropes and going to work. Now it's VanCamp holding on as the referee looks closely. But, the champ is slick. She knows what she has to do to keep him at bay, and she does it. She jabs back in spots, keeping the guard high the rest of the time. She clinches when she can. She puts the body on sale and takes plenty of punishment down there to protect the head. She takes a licking. But she keeps on ticking. At the bell, Holt's countered shutout with shutout. But, VanCamp is still standing and the cards read 38-38.

ROUND FIVE:

Now it's Holt looking for the kill. The challenger has been in a title fight before and come up short. She has no intention of letting that happen this time. Claire is immediately forward, bobbing and weaving, guard high, looking to close and go to work and DOWN GOES THE AUSSIE! Holt caught with a short right hook and sent to her knees! EVC watches from a neutral corner as her fellow blonde struggles to her feet in time to beat the count. Referee waives VanCamp forward and on she comes! Emily sensing victory now, banging away at a retreating Holt. She's got the left hand going, banging in the right, forcing Claire to the ropes, battering at her high guard. Again, the referee looking closely and DOWN GOES VANCAMP! Straight right hand counter out of nowhere for Holt and VanCamp is on her back! And now it's Holt watching from a neutral corner as Emily struggles to her feet. And the referee waives Claire forward. And the Aussie begins emptying the magazines. Holt just reefing hard leather at a wobbly Emily. VanCamp backed into the ropes for the second round in a row. Holt hammering away as Emily hangs on in a high guard, again, doing just enough to keep the referee from ending it. It's almost a full minute of vicious battering, but VanCamp ships the punishment and is standing at the bell. Holt's stolen the round and leads 48-47 at the halfway point.

ROUND SIX:

Holt more circumspect this time. Works forward carefully, using her jab and footwork to close, not taking any chances like she did in the previous round. She's sound and smooth and quickly begins to take control of the round as she realizes Emily's legs aren't all the way back. But, Holt doesn't get sloppy. She stays within herself and fights the plan. She puts punches together better than she has all night. She flurries, backs VanCamp up, forces her to the defensive, makes her one-dimensional. Em conducts a fighting retreat, working her jab and trying to counter with right hands, but she can't get much done. Claire's in charge, boxing lead, and scoring with both hands. VanCamp stays off the ropes, keeps countering, but can't get anything going, can't reverse the tide. It's Holt bell to bell, a shutout round that puts her up 58-56 with four rounds to go.

ROUND SEVEN:

Holt looks to consolidate. She penetrates behind the jab, goes to work, and immediately begins taking fire from Emily. Now we're working inside, blonde on blonde, and it's not pretty, but it's effective. We're working bodies, hooking to the head, grimly banging away despite the opposing leather coming at us. It's, for the first time in this bout, two-way, brutal stuff. It's also the fight's first test of wills. Claire wants control of this fight and is determined to gain it right now. Emily has no intention of ceding it. So, they battle. On the inside. It's nasty, nasty stuff. Leather pounding flesh. Girls shouldering and forearming one another to create space for the next punch. Thump. Thump. Thump. For three solid minutes, they thump away. And Holt never gets what she wants. She doesn't get control of the fight. Emily holds her own, wins the round close, and makes it 67-66.

ROUND EIGHT:

Claire right back at Emily. The challenger is determined to break the champion down. If she can't break her will, she can break her body, and that's where the Aussie's focus goes in the eighth. She's in tight, hands high, thumping the breadbasket and the ribs. Banging punch after punch into VanCamp's frame, each one another chink in the armor, another straw designed to break the champion's back. Emily responding in kind, body, body, body. Bang. Thump. Bang. Thump. And then BANG. AUSSIE DOWN! VanCamp plants a left hook into Holt's belly and a right uppercut follows to the chin and the challenger is on her back! Holt in deep trouble. Struggling mightily to get off the canvas. But, somehow, she manages. She's wobbly on her feet and the referee has to be thinking about stopping this, but he doesn't. He waives Emily forward and the lioness goes back to work. She jabs Claire into the ropes and has at it, brutally abusing the beautiful Aussie. Holt fights back as best she can. She's mostly reduced to covering up and clinching, but she does counter in spots. Mostly, however, she takes leather to the head and body, taking what VanCamp did a few rounds ago, a full minute of punishment. But, take it, she does, and, when the round ends, she's still on her feet. Emily, however, is in the lead, 76-75.

ROUND NINE:

It's desperate stuff for both sides now. Both fighters are reduced. Both are tired and hurting. Neither has  the legs she had to start the fight. So, the war of movement is over, and trench warfare has begin. The fighters simply close and begin pounding away at one another. Oh, there's art to it. Punches are still being set up. Jabs are still being used. Shoulders and heads are still moved to slip punches. But, there's very little footwork now. Both fighters simply plant their feet and punch. There isn't enough left in the legs to do much more. Both are also resolute. There's too much to lose here. For Holt, it's a second title shot in fifteen months. If she fails here, who knows when another opportunity will come. For VanCamp it's not only a chance to keep her belts, but to turn back a girl everyone has been wondering about. Emily wants to end that conversation for good and all, and there's only one way to do that. So. The trench warfare continues. For three minutes, they bang and thump, both doing plenty of damage, and both managing to ship it all and stay on their feet. When the bell rings, it's close, but it's Holt. And, going into the final round, it's 85-85.

ROUND TEN:

VanCamp finds something in the tank. The legs that weren't working in the last round begin to do so now. She's back to popping the jab, back to keeping Holt at range. Claire fighting hard to close, but, with her own legs heavy, having trouble dodging the barrage of jabs being sent out by the champion. Holt keeps trying, taking fire as she does so. But she can't get where she wants to go. Emily's accurate jab is stopping her advances. Holt is so close, and she knows it. So close, it's heartbreaking. She's gone nine rounds even with the champion, and now all she needs is the tenth, and she can't get where she wants to go. And then, she does. And DOWN GOES VANCAMP! Wait. Seriously? Yes. Holt slips a right hand, bounces forward and catches Emily with a right hook. Holt doesn't celebrate. Doesn't have the energy for that. And, it would be premature anyway. VanCamp gets to her feet, beating the count. The referee doesn't hesitate. He waives Holt forward. Claire is all in. There's virtually nothing left in the magazines, but, whatever's still down there is going to be fired now. VanCamp is against the ropes but not covering up. She's firing back, knowing that she now needs something big to avoid losing this on the cards. VanCamp catches Holt with a good right and backs her up. Emily steps forward and is ROCKED BY ANOTHER RIGHT HOOK! VanCamp slumps into the ropes and Holt fires every last shell she has, pounding away as the champ lays on the ropes and IT'S OVER! The referee has seen enough and he bundles VanCamp to safety! With less than 30 seconds to go, your winner by TKO10 and the NEW Unified Bantamweight Champion is Claire Holt!

AFTER:

The usual craziness in evidence inside the ring. Holt and corner crew celebrating and the ring packed with everyone this side of Joey Fatone. In the midst of it all, Holt, jubilant, all doubters now silenced. "This is just a dream come true for me," the lovely Aussie gushes. "I knew this day was coming, despite what people said, that I'd flame out, that I wasn't as good as my record. I knew if I just kept going out there and proving myself I'd get another shot, and, when I did, I'd make it count. And I did. There's a new alpha bantam in the FCBA. And she's going to be around for a long time. This is the Claire Holt Era. And it begins right now!"
