Jamie Chung vs. Kristen Bell
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Chung oozing confidence in pre-fight, despite fighting a girl who's won more titles than Jamie has fights. "She's built for me," says Chung with a gorgeous smile. "I've got speed plus a lot of height and range at this weight. Krissy's a little girl who'll have to come to me. And, when she does, I'll beat her up and stop her."

Bell not at all happy about said confidence, or some other recent events. "You know, there was a lot of talk about Mishy and Scerbo and girls like that not getting into that flyweight tournament. Well, here I am, a three-time champion, and I'm not even mentioned. But, the good news is, I get to remind everyone who the best flyweight in the world is by beating the crap out of Jamie Chung."

ROUND ONE:

Chung may only have two wins and fewer than a dozen fights, but she's smart enough to know what her advantages are and how to use them. It's, with apologies to Meghan Trainor, all about the legs. Jamie's got a horse and she knows how to ride it. She's got a jab, and she knows how to use it. And, as for Krissy, it's all about trying to stalk a quick, rangy girl and taking leather to her face as a result. Bell can't get into range to do anything, despite her best efforts. She tries to get forward, tries to cut the ring, and can do neither. Instead, Chung works the outside beautifully, bouncing and circling, popping jabs, stopping just long enough to touch the blonde up before getting on her horse again. When the final bell rings, it's an easy, breezy first for the brunette, who earns the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Bell determined, Chung having fun. Jamie again legging along the perimeter, forcing Krissy to chase. Bell now working the feet, looking for any and all opportunities to cut the ring, and finding more than she did in the first. Krissy bouncing forward at every such opportunity and letting the hands go. Hooking the body, flurrying to the head. Jamie working to keep the exchanges short, slipping away to open canvas and getting back to the jab and move. It's an interesting contrast in styles and a good example of how important they are. When Jamie gets her space, she gets more done, but, when Krissy can close and get those hooks going, Bell has the advantage. Both women have their moments, but it's Bell eking out a close one to even things at 19 after two.

ROUND THREE:

NOW Kristen gets rolling. Bell's got Chung's hop and pop all figured out. Oh, she's still getting her face powdered at times. Jamie's too quick to avoid that and still get to your spots, but, Kristen is getting to them now. She's getting the ring cut, getting inside Jamie's reach, and making with the hooks. Boom! Crack! to paraphrase Charli XCX. Head, body and back again. It's slick. It's smooth. It's effective. It's a three time champ with a Hall of Fame winning percentage showing exactly why she's that girl. Chung tries to adjust. Ties up some when Bell gets in to shut off the exchanges and force breaks. But, the little blonde is relentless. And relentlessly effective. It's Bell from, well, bell to bell, and Kristen has the 29-28 lead after three.

ROUND FOUR:

You can't always control events, but you can control how you react to them, and, sometimes in a fight, how you react tells a major tale. And it tells one for Jamie here. She's just had control of the fight seized by a favored, far more experienced fighter. What comes next will determine whether we have a fight on our hands or whether Kristen's about to take Chung to the woodshed. We have a fight on our hands. Jamie goes back to the hop and pop, scoring points as Kristen works in, but, when Bell gets there, Chung now fires back in kind. It isn't where she wants to be. It isn't where she's at her best. But she works hard and holds her own. She slows down Krissy's momentum and scores enough that, when you add in what she does as Bell works forward, she pulls out the round in narrow fashion and evens things at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Bell ups the pressure. She's walking through Chung's jabs now, willing to take to give. Jamie giving ground, wants to create space when possible, but still willing to trade in tight to stop any Krissy romps. Jamie ties up when she can, forces breaks and space that way, but, mostly, she's under siege for two minutes. Then it gets worse. Bell rings her up with a nasty right hook and Jamie's all noodle legged and going backward. Bell piles on immediately, driving her rival into the ropes and having at her with heavy leather to the head and body. Krissy wants the finisher and she's doing everything but pushing all her chips into the middle to get it. Jamie hangs on grimly and, when the bell rings, she's still standing, but Krissy's done some damage and won the round wide to take a 48-47 lead.

ROUND SIX:

Bell sensing victory. All up in Jamie's grill. Chung doesn't have the legs to hop and pop. Has to hang and bang with Krissy, and she's all grumpy doing it. She's game, though. Fights to hold canvas. Plays for time as she waits for the legs to come around. Bell, though, on a mission. She's firing away with both hands looking for that "off" switch. About 90 seconds in, to paraphrase Pat Travers, "Boom, boom. out go the lights." It's not one punch, but a flurry. A straight right ends it and sends Jamie crashing to her back. She actually bounces once before coming to rest, arms and legs scattered around her body, eyes closed, head lolling. There's a count, of course, but it's the proverbial formality. Jamie unmoving. Bell standing smiling in a neutral corner. When the referee reaches ten and waives it off, Kristen simply waives to the crowd and walks to her stool to sit down while the brunette wreckage is cleared from the ring. A brutal KO6 from a girl who wants to remind people of just who she is and why respect must be paid.

AFTER:

Bell matter-of-fact during the post-fight interviews. Clearly not surprised by anything that happened in there and doesn't think anyone else should be, either. "She's not in my league," Krissy says with a nod. "It's that simple. I'm elite. She's just a girl. And you saw what happens when those two meet. The result isn't pretty."
