Rebecca Romijn vs. Bridget Regan
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

Plenty of respect pre-fight between two big-hitting welters. "She's one of the best in the division," says Rebecca with a nod. "But, here's the thing. That 'two fighter division' stuff was always crap. We might not have the depth of some of the other divisions, but there are lots of girls here capable of wearing the belts, and I'm one of them."

"She's a four-time champion," says Bridget. "She's long and she has a great punch. She's dangerous. But, I've gotten back on track now and I'm looking to wear the gold again. I have to deal with her tonight to get that shot, and that's exactly what I plan to do."

ROUND ONE:

These two fought a couple of years ago, and it's clear both remember that well. Rebecca's all about the gun platform, wanting to use that length on the shorter Regan. Bridget looking to jab and close. She can do the ranged warfare thing, too, but against the blonde's reach, she wants to work inside. Romijn, however, is a 70-fight veteran, and she shows the veteran wiles in this stanza. She's always been athletic and she still moves very well, and that footwork combined with the long jab are the key. She's able to keep Bridget mostly on the end of her gloves, where she can set the younger woman up with left hands and bang home rights in the openings. Regan works hard to get inside and, when she does, she has success. But, she mostly doesn't and finds herself taking shell from the big blonde. When the bell rings, it's 10-9, Romijn.

ROUND TWO:

More of the same. Romijn's finding ways to dictate terms with that jab. This is almost a replay of the pair's first fight in 2012, except Regan's more careful this time. She's not charging the blonde, not trying to walk through her, because she remembers the kind of power Rebecca has and how dangerous doing something unsound against her can be. This time, Bridget's extremely sound. She's keeping the gloves up and the head and feet moving, but Big Becky is on target. She's got the gunnery range and she's getting that heavy leather where she wants it. Regan sturdy, of course. She's shipping it and continuing to work forward, scoring inside when she gets there, but Romijn is piling up the points as she touches the younger woman up from bell to bell, extending her lead to 20-18.

ROUND THREE:

Romijn in rhythm, and it's both a beautiful and a terrible thing to behold, depending on which corner you're standing in. The punches are coming together now and she's picking Regan up on the outside, snapping the head back with a couple of the follow on rights. Bridget refusing to be discouraged, however, continuing to work in and bang when she gets there, scoring as much as she during those rare opportunities. Rebecca closes them off as quickly as she can, however, wrapping Bridget in those long arms and forcing a break. About 90 seconds in, Bridget slips past Rebecca's glove. Romijn ties and Regan punches free and LIGHTS HER UP with a right uppercut. Romijn wobbles backward and Regan lets the hands go, and that quickly the complexion of the fight changes. Regan's all over the blonde, banging away with heavy leather. Rebecca's quickly backed to the ropes where she gets the guard high and keeps it there, putting that awesome body on sale. Bridget buys and buys, thumping away with both hands to the belly, ribs, lats. Romijn won't bring the guard down, however. She covers up and begins tying up, running clock successfully to the bell. But, Regan's changed the game and cut the lead in half, to 29-28 after three.

ROUND FOUR:

Bridget off her stool looking for the finisher. Rebecca back to the left hand, trying to keep Regan at range, but Bridget now charges in and goes to work. Romijn ties her up, wrestles her, forces a break. Regan right back forward to be tied up again. Exchange after exchange is the same, Bridget working past the glove, starting to go to work, then Rebecca tying her up and forcing a break. Until Romijn CATCHES Regan with a right hand on the way in and now it's BRIDGY who's wobbly butt. Regan's legs do a shimmy on the spot and Romijn needs no engraved invitation to get to work. The blonde now lets the hands go and backs Regan up over and over again with hard, accurate leather. Bridgy's legs aren't working very well and, despite her best efforts, she ends up on the ropes, where Big Becky controls her with that left jab, setting her up for hard, accurate rights. It's nearly two minutes of Regan being shaken by bomb after bomb, but those legs hold up, and, at the bell, she's still standing. But, she's a little scuffed, and Romijn walks back to her corner with a smile and a 39-37 lead.

ROUND FIVE:

Grim stuff for fans of Bridgy Regs. She's in trouble from the opening bell as Romijn gets the range and begins backing her up. Regan's legs still aren't working properly, and, without the movement, she's a sitting duck for the big blonde's long, powerful punches. Regan's on the defensive almost constantly, covering up, fighting to hold canvas, but Rebecca's pounding punches through her guard and forcing her into a fighting retreat. Romijn is more dominant as the round goes on. Everything's working. The jab. The right hands. A leads to B which leads to C, and all of them are hard, accurate punches, several of which shake Regan. And then. BAM! BLONDE GIRL DOWN! What? Regan counters with a WHISTLING right hand that nails the big blonde on the chin and Romijn is down on her back staring at the lights. It looks for a moment like it's over, but Romijn sits up and then gets up with two counts to spare. She's wobbly, but she's standing and the referee waives Bridget forward. Regan's quickly all in, but there's almost no time left in the round. A couple of flurries and the bell rings. Rebecca survives it, but Regan has used the knockdown to even things at 47 at the halfway point.

ROUND SIX:

Bridget looking to finish, but, not so fast, says the big blonde. Regan pouring forward and taking heavy fire, Bridget firing back and HERE WE GO! Reserve some space on Pier Six, because the two welters are brawling and firing bombs that would bust most lesser fighters. But, Romijn and Regan are nothing if not sturdy. They ship the shell and the hurt and keep on banging. It gets grimmer and grimmer as the round goes on, the shots harder, the fighters slowing a bit, but it's barely perceptible. The fire just keeps coming, neither willing to give an inch and both desperate to take canvas. You could fight this thing in the proverbial phone booth and have room left over for someone to make a call. At the bell, there's a staredown. Neither woman has backed up an inch and neither has imposed will. There's not much in it, but Bridget takes the points narrowly to take the lead 57-56.

ROUND SEVEN:

BOOM! Right off the bell Rebecca catches Bridgy coming in and stops her in her tracks. Regan doesn't wobble. She's not hurt, but her attention has been gotten. And Romijn wants to get more than that. Big Becky works forward behind that long left, looking to take back control of the fight. Regan slowly begins giving ground in front of the blonde onslaught. Romijn getting all her length into these punches, forcing Regan to cover up and back up. Rebecca putting punches together, extending flurries. getting work done. And BLONDE. GIRL. DOWN. It's a right hand perfectly placed over Romijn's left before the blonde can get it back. It contacts chin and Rebecca crumples to her back fast asleep, not moving at all as the count passes her by, giving the victory by KO7 to Bridget Regan,

AFTER:

Regan gracious in victory. "Like I said before the fight, she's dangerous. She's big, and long, and she can hit. Some of those bombs she hit me with? A lot of girls would have been down for the count. But, I'm not a lot of girls, I'm THIS girl, the best welterweight in the world. And, Cassidy, if you don't believe that, why don't we get together so I can prove it? Happy New Year, Cass."
