HAYDEN PANETTIERE VS ALEXA VEGA
(Foxfire Boxing vs Empire Boxing)
Results: Lookout / Writing: Archer

Before:  Hayden appears before the pre-fight press in a business-like mood. “Yes,” she admits, “I was very disappointed to go out in the first round of the flyweight tournament even though it was to Miley Cyrus who ended up winning the thing. But I am not going to let it get to me. So, I am starting a new year and fighting a new opponent: Alexa Vega. She doesn’t have the best record, but I think she has potential to cause me problems. I like working out problems and I’ll work out any I have with her. This fight will be very therapeutic for me and I am looking forward to it.”

Alexa Vega sits quietly at the table, but her face is flickering with annoyance as Hayden speaks. When it’s her turn, the Empire Boxing flyweight, bounds to her feet.

“It’s always nice to feel useful,” Alexa says snarkily, “but I have no intention of being Hayden’s ‘therapy opponent’—I’m the fighter who is going to make her realize Miley found her weakness and she’s not the only one. No, I’m not going to tell you what it is—you can all find out the same as Hayden—when I knock her out of the ring. That’s what I mean to do and that’s what I will do!”

Hayden purses her lips and silently shakes her head in disbelief. Alexa shoot her a defiant look and marches back to your own seat. A voice calls out from the press ranks:
“What do you say  to that Hayden?”.

Hayden pauses, looks at Alexa and then says: “Rookies should watch their mouths because I’ll be in the position to shut them up with my gloves.”

Alexa gives her a smirk: “Just like I will shut YOU up!”

Hayden gives Alexa a final dirty look and gets up: “Thank you for coming,” she says to the press, then she turns to Alexa: “and YOU are going to learn a lesson in manners.”

“See you then,” Alexa says with more smirking defiance.

On the night of the fight the two small warriors (Hayden is 5’ 1 ½”, Alexa is is 5’1) are glaring at each other as the referee tries to keep order with stern reminders of the rules. Hayden is in a gold bikini with gold gloves and her hair pulled back then held by a golden bowed ribbon. Alexa is in black with red trim bra and panties, black gloves and red bowed ribbon securing her pulled back hair. Told to touch gloves, they slam their gloves together with a SMACK that is heard in the back row of the arena. Both fighters glare at each other and then turn away before referee can intervene.

R1: Hayden Panettiere shows her veteran smarts by not letting her anger with Alexa make her do anything rash. She comes out of her corner with her guard up and waiting for her opponent to make the first move. She does not have long to wait, as Alexa comes roaring out of her corner and goes on the attack with some all-out hooks into Hayden’s belly just above the waistband of her gold bottoms. Hayden looks startled at the power in those punches and steps back with a gasp. Then Alexa charges in again, feinting to the belly which draws down Hayden’s guard and ALEXA EXPLODES AN UPPERCUT UNDER HAYDEN’S CHIN! Oh, wow! Hayden’s head jerked back, she stutter steps backwards and ALEXA SMASHES A RIGHT CROSS ACROSS HAYDEN’S CHOPS! AND HAYDEN GOES DOWN! The Foxfire veteran spins to the canvas landing awkwardly on her chest, arms and legs sprawled out! The crowd (and even Alexa Vega herself) are stunned by the sight. Alexa waits anxiously in the neutral corner as the referee starts to count. Hayden rises first to all fours, shaking her head and then seeming to realize she is about to be counted out, sucks in her breath and stands up on shaky limbs as the count reaches “NINE!” Referee studies Hayden’s eyes to see if she’s still there and is satisfied enough to allow the fight to continue. Alexa looks disappointed but quickly heads for Hayden to try to finish the job, but Hayden’s got her jab up and functioning enough to knock Alexa’s own head back. Alexa tries dancing around Hayden. Hayden slow to follow, but manages to block or at least deflect Alexa’s incoming. Hayden’s defenses harden as the round continues and Alexa is frustrated at the bell. Nevertheless Alexa has easily won the opening stanza.

R2: Hayden clearly not recovered in this round. She has her defenses in place, but she’s not showing much in the way of offense. Alexa showing some nice footwork as she bobs and weaves, looking to get Hayden out of position and land that big finishing punch. However she can’t seem to find the opening. Still, Alexa is doing a good job of rattling Hayden’s brain with shots to the head as Hayden hunches behind her gloves. She also finds the chance to pump some hooks into Hayden’s belly to double her up at times. Hayden no looking good as Alexa banks another round.

R3: Foxfire trainer Virginia Madsen seen speaking quietly but firmly to Hayden during break. Hayden nodding, apparently taking it in and when the bell rings, she is quickly on her feet and hunting for Alexa Vega. Alexa seems startled to find Hayden on the attack and gets her face banged up by lightning strikes from the veteran. Alexa now the one staggering back under a barrage a leather, she finally uses her mobility to get out of Hayden’s way and try to regroup. Hayden in pursuit, works to drive Alexa back to the ropes, but Alexa showing stubborn defense and manages to avoid this fate to the end of the round. Hayden now in the fight and gives the battered Alexa a triumphant grin. Alexa returns it with a sullen glare as heads for her stool. Hayden reaches and gives the young fighter a slap on the butt. Alexa whirls around in shock and fury, but referee leaps between them. He gives Hayden an ear-burning  talking-to while keeping Alexa from talking revenge. Crowd, of course, is in a frenzy, some cheering, some booing, some just yelling incoherently. Referee finally gets the fighters under control and sends first Hayden (while he keeps a firm grip on Alexa) and then Alexa back to their corners.

R4: No surprise that this round is features an explosion of flyweight fury as Alexa and Hayden go after each other with little thought of defense. They just stand in front of each, circling at times and rapidly firing leather. The punch count for both fighters is soaring and they are landing freely against opposition head and body. Both fighters trying for the knockout, swiveling each other’s heads or lifting them up on her toes as the punches smash home. Hayden pulls back first, bleeding from cuts over her right eye and along her hairline, but Alexa, bleeding from her mouth and nose, is slow to take advantage of the retreat. Alexa remains on the offensive as Hayden tries to keep her back with the jab.  Fighters don’t seem to hear the bell and referee has to push them apart. Both are battered, sweat dripping off their gasping bodies and their faces swollen and bloody. No post-fight antics this time, Hayden and Alexa quietly return to their stools where their corner people try to patch them up.

R5: Alexa and Hayden show it doesn’t take much rest for a young fighter to recover and be ready for more action. Both out of their corners briskly and get right back at it. Again, there seems little interest in defense as both are throwing punches at each other with a rising intensity. Alexa backs Hayden up initially with some nice lifting uppercuts to the chin, but Hayden ducks down and goes after Alexa’s midsection. Alexa stepping back, doubled over with ache to her guts, but manages to plant a jab to Hayden’s mouth which splits her lips and makes her pull back. Then Hayden manages to get to the right and leaps in with a smashing right to Alexa’s left temple. ALEXA GOES DOWN. Alexa never saw the punch coming and it’s lights-out for her as she crashes on the canvas on her side, then rolls to her back, eyes fluttering but there is no one home! Hayden watching anxiously from the neutral and when she hears the count reach “TEN!”: She lets out a war hoop of victory mixed with relief.
The winner: Hayden Panettiere KO5.

After: “I thought about walking her,” Hayden later tells the press, “but I decided knocking her out was all the lesson she needed. I will admit my defense was missing for a lot of that fight and I have the bruises to show for it. Still, I admit I like a ‘may-the-best-slugger-win’ fight especially when I am the ‘best slugger’ as I was tonight. Alexa can punch, but she’s got to learn to be respectful around better fighters like me. Either that or she’s in more painful beatdowns like tonight.”

Alexa meets the press, her face swollen and bruised, but there is still defiance in her voice: “Yes, she got me. I just never saw the one that dropped me. I didn’t come out of it until I was back in the dressing room—but you all saw I nearly took her out in the 1st. So know I have the power it takes to beat even veterans. I just have to learn the additional skills it takes to finish them off. That’s my next objective!”

An entertaining flyweight slugfest gave the fans plenty of action, though both might have been better served with more attention to consistent defense. Hayden came back from a disastrous first round to win the bout, so she’s got some lessons to learn herself. Alexa won her first two fights against other rookies, but this is the third fight she’s lost to a veteran (Cassie Scerbo and Vanessa Hudgens were the other two) and she needs to find a way to beat them if she is to progress in celebrity boxing.
