Olivia Munn vs. Evangeline Lilly

Sceej Boxing vs Floydian
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Munn clearly believing she's being ducked by a certain Aussie blonde. "There's no way I shouldn't be fighting for the title tonight," she says, eyes shooting lasers. "But, we all know why I'm not. The TKO4 I put on little Miss Holt the first, and, if she has her way, only time we fought. She knows better than to give me another shot at those belts, or she's going to need suspenders to hold up her pants."

While Lilly thinks she's being disrespected. "It occurs to me," says Evangeline, with a gorgeous smile, "That 'The Munnster' is spending an awful lot of time talking and thinking about Claire Holt. Which is kind of interesting, since she should be thinking about the next girl who's going to knock her on her a**, and that girl would be Evangeline Lilly."

ROUND ONE:

Two of the hardest-hitting, sturdiest bantams in the game are squaring off, so, it's no surprise to see plenty of aggression early, and, as we've seen before, there's no bantam more aggressive than Olivia Munn. Munn is right in Lilly's grill from the opening seconds, surprising the former champion, whose power usually gets plenty of respect. Not tonight, and all that aggression clearly unnerves Lilly. Evangeline is backed up, thrown onto the defensive, and finds herself fighting off her back foot. Munn's bringing leather from everywhere and, while it's not all landing, mostly due to excellent defense from Lilly, there's plenty getting through. Lilly tries several times to restore order with hard shot, but Munn won't be cowed, won't be slowed. She keeps bringing the work, keeps thumping, keeps Lilly off balance, and wins the first going away to take the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

More aggression from Munn, but now Lilly determined to stamp it out. She's standing her ground, winging back, dead set on chastising Munn for her impertinence. The result is crowd-pleasing rally after crowd-pleasing rally. Both fighters land hard, clean stuff. Both fighters are backed up a step on occasion, only to step right back forward into the fray. It's bomb after bomb until one lands almost perfectly on Lilly's chin. Evangeline is GOBSMACKED! She staggers, stumbles...but stays on her feet. And Munn, shark that she is, smells blood in the water. If anyone in the crowd thinks they've seen Munn's top-level aggression to this point, they are sadly mistaken. What happens next redefines the word. Olivia isn't so much throwing punches as launching them. Evangeline is in full rout, backed to the ropes and savaged with hard, accurate leather in great volume. She's shaken repeatedly by short, accurate right hands, and the referee appears ready to step in at any moment. But, finally, mercifully, the bell rings. Lilly is still standing, but she's wobbling back to the corner, trailing 20-18 and in much deeper trouble than that score would indicate.

ROUND THREE:

Munn right back to the offensive. Lilly willingly gives ground. Unsure of the legs, she backs to the ropes and fights counter from the pocket. It's a strategy borne, perhaps, of necessity, but it quickly becomes clear that it's also a somewhat effective one. Evangeline couldn't slow Olivia's aggression with aggression, but she now shows she can blunt some of its effectiveness with a concerted effort at defense and counter punching. Munn stills scores, of course. She's throwing too many pitches not to get some over, but many of them land on the shoulders, arms, and gloves of Lilly, who shows plenty of excellent head and shoulder movement and uses every opening created by Munn's offense to land counters. Evangeline's retorts are hard and accurate, though they don't discourage Munn, who keeps the pressure on. It's a good, back-and-forth round and it's close, but Lilly gets it and cuts Olivia's lead in half, to 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Lilly right back to the ropes. It looks like those sturdy legs are back now, so the pocket work is now a matter of choice rather than a matter of no choice. Lilly likes the terms, even though this isn't her preferred style, and she's sticking with them. Munn, of course, is more than willing to lay siege. She's too smart and too skilled to get baited into getting sloppy or punching herself out. She remains aggressive, but plays the chess game. She assaults, yes, but she sets punches up, works to create openings, works to avoid giving same to Lilly. Evangeline, though, is surgical in her counters. There's no keyhole she can't get a punch through, and, like the leather coming from Munn, it's not only accurate, it has plenty of power behind it. The fourth doesn't have as much action as the first or second. It isn't as crowd-pleasing. But it features excellent boxing by both brunettes. It's also close. And, again, it goes to Lilly, making the score 38-38 after four.

ROUND FIVE:

Lilly back in the pocket. Munn back to the assault, but working body now. With Lilly's guard high, Olivia decides to go low. There are two ideas at work here. The first, of course, is to score points. The second is to bring down Evangeline's guard. The first happens immediately. But, against a woman built like Lilly, the second will take time. That body can ship a lot of shell. But, Olivia's ready to make the investment. The tactical change bears fruit in another area for Munn as well. The body attack lowers her level and creates fewer openings for Lilly's counters. All in all, it's a good deal for Munn, and she takes full advantage of same, banging away at her rival's ribs and midsection, while moving upstairs enough to keep her honest. Lilly effective in spots, still getting some counters home, but, there's no question this is Munn's round by the time it's over, and Olivia's back on top 48-47.

ROUND SIX:

Same terms. Lilly back in the pocket, Munn trying to reduce her. Olivia making an even heavier investment in the body now, working it at every chance, keeping her level low, taking away the angles Evangeline needs to counter. Until Lilly lands a short right uppercut that changes everything. Munn stumbles backward, staggered, seriously hurt. NOW Lilly is off the ropes and pouring forward, banging away at a dazed wobbly Olivia with everything in the magazine. Munn hanging on desperately with a full two minutes to go. It's ugly an it gets uglier. Munn's backed into the ropes and absolutely SAVAGED. Lilly hammers away, getting everything into her punches. Munn doing just enough, and, frankly, probably NOT enough to keep the referee from stopping it, but, he lets it continue. And Evangeline pours it on, rocking Olivia with right hands twice more, though, somehow Munn's legs hold her up. When the bell rings, Evangeline has pitched a shutout, tied this thing at 57, and left Olivia nothing short of a wreck.

ROUND SEVEN:

No pocket this time for Lilly. She's a lioness stalking wounded prey and she's moving in for the kill. Olivia jabbing, to keep Lilly off, but she has little in the way of legs and is clearly still unsteady after last round's shellacking. And Lilly takes full advantage, squaring up Munn and landing heavy shot that backs her up, and, about a minute in, a WHISTLING right hand that knocks her flat to her back! Lilly raises her hands in triumph as she heads to a neutral corner. Olivia's not getting up from that one. Only. She is. Munn makes it back to her feet at eight, but she's clearly a wreck. The referee may be having second thoughts as he gives her the mandatory, but he waives Lilly forward. And, forward Evangeline comes, winging bombs with both hands from all directions. Munn's quickly against  the ropes taking. She's got the guard high, but Lilly isn't buying any of the body that's on sale. This is all about the finish. A left hook buckles Munn's legs, but Olivia stays on her feet. A right hand snaps the head back and Munn wobbles again. Get IN there ref! A short, vicious hook to the body doubles Munn up and a right uppercut snaps her head up and back. And STILL she won't go down. But THE REFEREE HAS SEEN ENOUGH! He leaps between the fighters and bundles a battered Olivia to safety! Your winner by TKO7 is Evangeline Lilly!

AFTER:

Lilly all smiles. Needed this one after the tough loss to Dushku last time out. "She was number one contender coming in," Evangeline says, still out of breath. "But, number one contender or not, there's no bantam in the world who's going to match power with me. When she tried that, I knew I had her. No way could she hold up. Give her credit. She lasted longer than I thought, but, in the end, she gave out, just like they all do."
