FEBRUARY FISTICUFFS AT THE ASYLUM

BEFORE:

"It's nice to be back in Philly," says Selena with a lovely smile. "I liked it when I was here, and, maybe you can't go home again, but, you can visit."

"I guess there's another storyline going on here," says Leighton with a shake of the head. "Maybe two if you want to get into that. But, I don't. I'm here to concentrate on one thing, getting a win and taking another step in my push toward the titles."

ROUND ONE:

O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's "Love You Like A Love Song"...

McCarthy: "I..."

Cassie: "Choose your next words carefully, Ms. McCarthy. The may be your last."

McCarthy: "Listen, Scabbo..."

Tess: "I wouldn't push this one, Mac."

O'Dell: "And, coming down to ringside is the singer of that tune..."

Cassie: "Go-MEY! Go-MEY! Go-MEY!"

O'Dell: "The lovely Selena Gomez, who, of course, is a former stablemate and still close friend of our own Cassie Scerbo..."

Cassie: "She should STILL be a stablemate of mine. She's far superior to the girl who replaced her, and her breath does not smell like a decaying skunk..."

O'Dell: "Gomez, of course, represents LCA these days, and she's done quite well for herself of late, working her way close to the Top 25 in the latest rankings. Selena slapping glove to hand with Cassie on the way by, climbing into the ring, and helped off with the robe to reveal a zebra print two-piece..."

McCarthy: "And a body that..."

Cassie: "I'm going to have to spell this out in plain English, apparently. SHUT UP, MAC!"

McCarthy: "Shut...you can't...I'll...Siri, call my agent!"

Tess: "I'm going to ask Wiz to get Gomez here EVERY month..."

McCarthy: "He won't bring her here every month because she actually WINS fights, unlike most of the tomato cans he trots out around here..."

Cassie: "THAT'S better."

McCarthy: "Don't tell ME what's better, you little..."

Tess: "Aren't you supposed to be on the phone with your agent?"

McCarthy: "Voicemail."

Tess: "Shocker."

O'Dell: "Aaaannnddd, that's 'Somebody To Love', and before any of you three say anything, we've gone through that bit just about enough. THIS version is by Robin Thicke and the lady coming to the ring right now, 'The Marco Island Mauler', Leighton Meester!"

Tess: "Big opportunity for Meester tonight. Leighton, as she said pre-fight, looking to get into the title picture this year, and a win over Gomez is a big step in that direction."

O'Dell: "Meester into the ring, helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve to reveal that pink and red number she likes, and, we're about ready to go. Let's get some picks. Tess likes Leighton. Mac?"

McCarthy: "Gomez can fight some. She'll beat an overrated Dancing Hooker like Meester."

O'Dell: "Need I ask, Cassie?"

Cassie: "Go-MEY! Go-MEY! Go-MEY!"

O'Dell: "We have a split panel. And here we go. Gomez showing some movement early, looking to angle up and set up against Meester. Leighton working behind a solid left jab, using it to locate, wants to square aganst the younger fighter."

McCarthy: "No real style contrast at the moment. Both moving the feet some, rolling shoulders, bobbing the head, but both want to stand and box."

O'Dell: "For the moment, they do, and that's exactly what we're seeing. Good, quick exchanges developing when Selena gets the angle she wants or when Leighton gets her square. Little bit of a chess game happening, too, as we're seeing some feints with head and hand..."

Cassie: "Trying to create openings any way they can. Both fighters showing sound defense. Getting the hands out and back, keeping the heads moving."

O'Dell: "This is excellent two-way stuff. Not much not to like on either side here as we head into the final seconds of the round. Meester lands a SOLID combination. Right hand in there the best punch of the fight so far, but Selena shakes it off and counters. Another good exchange now, with both fighters landing solid shot and there's the bell. Good round on both sides, but Meester got it."

Tess: "And, as close as this one might be, that could be a big 10-9 lead."

ROUND TWO:

O'Dell: "Into the second and we're back to where we ended the first. Both fighters want to engage. Both showing good movement, head and foot, both looking for the right geometry, and, when they find it, letting the hands go. Gomez all about angles and defense, and that latter piece is something we didn't see earlier in the career..."

Cassie: "All Gomey needed was experience. I told everyone that. I was in the ring with her a lot when she was here at Bazz, and I know the kind of tools she has. She just needed rounds. She's gotten them, and you're seeing a different fighter."

O'Dell: "Meester another girl who's changed stables, and it appears that change has worked for her as well..."

Tess: "For Leighton, it wasn't so much about experience, though, as getting regular work at fly, which appears to be her natural weight. With all the good flys at Lookout! Leighton was getting pushed up to bantam a lot. At Front Street, she's fighting strictly fly, and that appears to be working for her."

O'Dell: "And things working for both fighters as we head down the stretch in the second. Another competitive two-way round, with both girls finding the range, able to put punches together. Leighton popping that jab, Selena sliding right, tapping the left, hooking off of it. Final seconds tick away, and there's the bell. Closer. Gomez, though."

McCarthy: "19-19 after two."

ROUND THREE:

O'Dell: "Third begins with more of that probing left hand from Leighton. Meester able to locate with it, but Gomez slick defensively, not allowing the Front Streeter to control her with it. She keeps the feet moving, keeps showing angles, gets where she needs to be and throws punches in bunches."

McCarthy: "Gomez taking that hook downstairs at times now. She's working a little body."

O'Dell: "Is, indeed. No major investment, just enough to keep Meester honest. Leighton, meanwhile, concentrating her attacks above the next. Pinpointing with the left hand to set up the right. Selena picking some of that off, but Meester scoring plenty."

Tess: "This is fun to watch, Jenny. Both of these girls showing a lot of skill in this one."

O'Dell: "No question of that. A lot of thinking going on, too, as the fighters make slight adjustments, always moving, always looking for angles and openings to get leather through. Ten seconds to go and Gomez with a NICE flurry to get us to the bell. Two solid shots landed in that one! Another two-way round, and another win for Gomez."

Cassie: "And Gomey now on the lead, 29-28."

ROUND FOUR:

O'Dell: "Fourth round and it's more angling from Gomez while Meester tries to square behind the left jab. Good foot movement here, but the hand movement is excellent. Both fighters showing good defense, picking off punches, not allowing much room for their respective rivals to land any leather."

Tess: "Plenty of skill being demonstrated on both sides right now, Jenny."

O'Dell: "No question of that. Girls working hard to create openings and MEESTER ROCKS GOMEZ! Double-tap jab and a right hook follow and Selena is buzzed! Meester quickly to the left hand, jabbing the younger woman backward and LANDING ANOTHER RIGHT HOOK! Gomez wobbled. She's up against the ropes and Meester going to town!"

Cassie: "Hang IN there, Gomey! Keep the guard up!"

O'Dell: "Gomez DOES have the guard high and Meester making no effort to drop it with body work. Leighton looking for a switch marked 'Off' right now. She's banging away with both hands, getting everything into the punches. Gomez picking off a lot of it, but some getting through. Selena's legs shaken a couple of times but they're holding up to the bell and there it is. Round to Meester wide, but Gomez survives it!"

McCarthy: "38-38. All even after four."

ROUND FIVE:

O'Dell: "Fifth begins with Meester on the attack. She's forward behind the jab and Gomez is giving ground. Selena not trying to hold canvas, looks to still be unsure of the legs..."

McCarthy: "She's definitely still buzzed and trying to solidify her front."

O'Dell: "And Leighton looking to exploit in a big way. Showing plenty of respect, though, setting up her punches, getting her hands back, getting in good position. It's sound stuff. No winging away. Selena using every opportunity she gets to counter, but she isn't getting many. Leighton's fighting lead and suppressing with a high work rate."

Cassie: "Gomey doing a good job of playing defense and playing for time, though."

O'Dell: "That she is. Meester controlling the round, close to dominating the round, but Gomez slowly beginning to firm up. Leighton hasn't found the switch, and, as we head down the stretch here in the fifth it's looking like she's not going to find it. What she IS finding is plenty of points. She's scoring with both hands, controlling Selena with the jab right to the bell. Good round for Leighton."

Tess: "And Meester's back on top, 48-47 half way home."

ROUND SIX:

O'Dell: "Gomez appears to have the legs back as we start the sixth round. Selena no longer retreating. She's stepping to like she was in the early rounds, and Meester right there to meet her. Gomez sliding, angling, popping jabs, creating openings for her right hand."

Cassie: "This is where Selena can be so effective. She's become a very good boxer and you're seeing it now. Look how she works the angles, plays the geometry, moves the hands and feet."

O'Dell: "Meester using that left to locate, trying to control Gomez with it, but, again, Selena clever with the feet and hands, not allowing that. Both fighters getting to spots, getting off. Neither allowing the other to fight lead."

McCarthy: "Lot of action for the fans, Jenny, as both girls are getting off. A lot of punches being blocked and slipped, but there's plenty of leather flying."

O'Dell: "And some of it is landing. There are some nice, crisp punches finding the mark as both women score well despite the solid defense being played. Meester wants that double-tap jab, working it very well. Gomez wants to go left-right, extend the flurries, force Leighton to cover up. Final seconds ticking away and there's the bell. Good two-way round to Gomez."

Tess: "And we're even again. 57-57."

ROUND SEVEN:

O'Dell: "We're into the seventh and it's anyone's fight. Both fighters have strategies that are working for them, and both going to stick with them. Meester wants to work the long left, locate, center, then drop rights. Gomez about angles and foot movement, getting to her spots and scoring..."

McCarthy: "The Gomez kid has impressed me tonight. Not because she's doing well against Meester, who's an Imported Dancing Hooker, but because of the difference I'm seeing in her from the fighter she used to be. She's not a finished product yet, but she's becoming pretty polished."

O'Dell: "No question of that. Selena slips a right, lands a good flurry and NEARLY GETS DROPPED WITH A RIGHT-HAND COUNTER! Meester keyholed that right and Gomez is HURT! The knees wobbled and she nearly went down and Meester is now all in!"

Tess: "Leighton letting both hands go in a big way. This is as subtle as a bag of hammers!"

O'Dell: "Gomez bullied back into the ropes. Got the guard high again, keeping it there, trying to jab back in spots, but she's taking in a big way. Leighton getting a TON behind these punches. Really teeing off on Gomez..."

Cassie: "Gomey's ok. She's playing for time again and doing it well."

O'Dell: "No questioning either of those statements. She's putting the body on sale, but Leighton not buying at any price. Instead she's looking to cut power to the legs completely. Not going to happen, though. Gomez running out the last few seconds and there's the bell! Selena looking a bit scuffed, but she's on her feet heading back to the corner."

Cassie: "And, despite a wide round for Leighton, it's still a one-point fight, 67-66 for Meester with three to go."

ROUND EIGHT:

O'Dell: "Eighth round begins and Gomez seems no worse for the wear of that seventh. She's moving very well, sliding, showing that good footwork. She's getting punches put together while Meester again works the left hand trying to locate and square..."

McCarthy: "I like how Gomez has been so level in this fight. She's gotten hurt a couple of times, but she's shrugged it off and gotten back to work. Hasn't gotten too passive or too aggressive. She's just stayed with her plan."

O'Dell: "And it's a plan that's worked for her and has her right in this fight. And the same thing can be said of Meester. Leighton's stuck with what she likes to do and made it work for her. Work the left, use it to get Gomez where she wants her, then drop in rights LIKE THAT ONE THAT STAGGERED GOMEZ! Selena rocked by a straight right hand. Meester letting the hands go! Gomez in full retreat and DOWN SHE GOES!"

McCarthy: "Right hook did the damage..."

O'Dell: "And put Gomez on her back. Count at three. Four. Five..."

Cassie: "Get UP, Gomey!"

O'Dell: "Six. Seven. Eight. Gomez rolls to her belly. Nine. TEN! It's over! Gomez can't beat the count and your winner by KO8 is 'The Marco Island Mauler', Leighton Meester!"

AFTER:

O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"

Tess: "I have our winner, Leighton Meester, and, Leighton, lot of good boxing on both sides, but the difference was, you were able to hurt her..."

Leighton: "I landed some good stuff, but she has a pretty good chin. She took some punches that would have knocked a lot of flys out and kept coming. I finally got her, but it wasn't easy."

Tess: "Are you the Alpha fly at Front Street?"

Leighton: "I'm the BEST fly at Front Street. They didn't bring me here to sit behind other girls. They brought me here to win the flyweight gold, and that's what I'm going to do."
