JOANNE KELLY VS MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD
(INNSMOUTH INSTUTUTE OF FEMALE FIGHTING) VS (FOXFIRE BOXING)
Results: Lookout   Writing: Archer

Before: “I was pleasantly surprised when Mary and her stable came looking for me,” Joanne Kelly tells the press. “After she managed to squeak by me by one point, I figured that would be the last I’d hear of her for years to come.  Yet, here we are facing off again. I know why, of course, she’s looking for an easy win after Adrianne Palicki spoiled her last one. Too bad I am not as easy as she thinks. I’m out to win this thing. I don’t fight nearly as much as I would like so I am not going to let this chance for a win get by me.”

Mary looks slightly annoyed at some of Joanne’s remarks as she takes the podium: “I just want to assure you, Jo—while I know I can beat you—I don’t expect it to be easy. I want a tough opponent, I would hope you know that about me. I may not be the most successful lightweight around at the moment, but I will never look for an ‘easy’ fight to pad my record.”

“Sorry,” Joanne says, “but I am going to be the one to beat you.”

“You’re welcome to try,” Mary replies coolly.

Joanne in a checker board black and white retro bikini with black boots and gloves, with white lacings. Hair pulled back in a single battle braid. Mary in bright red retro bikini with thin white belt. Red gloves and boots with white lacings. Hair coiled and piled up on top of Mary’s head. Both fighters very professional during ring instructions, quick touch of the gloves and they are back in their respective corners. The bell rings…

R1: Mary has her left gloves up around her cheek as she advances on Joanne behind  stabbing right jab. Joanne circling, guard at the ready and she uses it to counter Mary’s initial probes. Then Mary makes a quick move towards Joanne’s middle with the right and Joanne bites. As guard goes down, Mary unleashes a left hook had swats Joanne’s jaw and knocks her head around. Mary shifts her feet and goes after Joanne’s midsection as the IFFI fighter tries to protect her head. Loud, moist smacking impacts make Joanne gurgle as she tips forward, opening up her chin for Mary to crisply uppercut. Joanne moving to one side fires back at Mary as she is turning to follow. Mary takes a straight right to the sternum, then a left hook bangs off her cheekbone and Mary has to pause to regroup. Joanne tries to take advantage but there is a flurry of tight, chest-to-chest body punches. Mary manages to slip an uppercut under Joanne’s guard and connect with her chin. Joanne falls back and Mary jabs at her face drawing blood from a clout to the nose. Joanne manages to recover and get her jab going sufficiently to keep Mary at bay, but the round goes to Winstead.

R2: Joanne more aggressive this round as she tries to blunt Mary’s offense and seize control. Mary resisting this challenge and they are fighting back and forth across midring. First Joanne will advance, but then Mary will counterattack only to be forced back by fresh leather from Joanne. Great for boxing purists to watch. Finally, Joanne able to show some good footwork to befuddle Mary and score against her face, then pound her to the body before returning to score with some nice shots between the eyes and forehead. Mary trying to shake it off, goes for Joanne’s ribs late, but takes a solid clouting left to the jaw to discourage her. Mary trying to regroup when time runs out on the round and Joanne Kelly wins a close stanza.

R3: More back and forth midring action this round as the battle returns to the trenches. Arms of both fighters moving like pistons as they stand so close, they are actually touching foreheads for a time and staring each other in the eyes. Very dramatic moment, but then Mary suddenly steps back to draw Joanne off balance and wallops her with a right cross to the chin. Joanne lurching back in obvious confusion. Mary gets excited and takes some wild blockbuster swings, that Joanne is able to duck under and come up hammering Mary’s breasts with uppercuts. Mary given a shock reminder not to be reckless, calms down and deliberately circles Joanne looking for openings. Joanne’s defenses stronger as the round progresses, but Mary much more active and has no trouble winning the round on points.

R4: Mary was not pleased at being kept at bay for the last part of R3 and she tries to break up Joanne’s defenses with an opening charge. Joanne struck to the belly, but as Mary leans in with the follow-up uppercut to the chin, Joanne strikes with a right cross to the chin swiftly followed by a left hook to same chin. MARY GOES DOWN! Mary stumbling back from the chin shots lands on her butt and sits there with an astonished look on her face. Joanne looks very pleased with herself as she trots to the neutral corner. Mary takes her time in rising to give herself as much time to recover as she can. Mary beats the count, but she faces a long two minutes once the fight resumes. At first, Mary hides behind her gloves and tries to back away from trouble. Joanne obliged to spend much time trying to corral Mary and herd her to the ropes. However, Mary slides along ropes and gets her jab going. Joanne taking punches to face and breasts grows wary and settles for longer range punches to the bell. Good round for Joanne, but the knockdown cinched it for her.

R5: Joanne stays on the offensive this round and she is using some grinding body work to keep Mary looking bottled up. Mary tries circling, looking for openings, but Joanne showing some good moves of her own to counter. Mary finally just goes at her, swinging hard and trying to break down Joanne’s defense.  Punches flying rapidly and both fighters getting hit head to waist. Mary just keeps coming and Joanne just keeps jabbing back. Finally repeated Joanne hooking to just above Mary’s white belt takes the steam out of Mary’s attack. Joanne shifts to the offensive, but Mary’s jab is strong too. They battle it out down to the bell. Joanne manages to edge Winnie out on the cards to secure the round.

R6: Mary got roughed up last round, but she must think it was good tactic because she forces herself in against Joanne once again. This time they are circling each other though with both of them looking for gaps. Mary getting hit from some odd angles., but takes them to slide a straight right over Joanne’s gloves to catch her on the temple. JOANNE KNOCKED TO HER KNEES. Joanne leans forward onto her hands, shaking her head and trying to stop the spin in her head. Mary watches with interest from the neutral corner as panting Joanne rises at 8 and assures the referee she knows how many fingers he’s holding up. Mary cool and calculated as she circles Joanne, strikes first to the sides and then the breasts. Then to the belly. Joanne sluggish in responses. Mary makes a lunge step to the right to draw Joanne’s attention, but suddenly shifts around and lashes out with the uppercut. Joanne caught square under the chin, staggers a few feet forward and then CRASHES ON HER FACE! Joanne Kelly hits hard, laying there, arms over her head as her lips press against the canvas. Referee starts counting, but the best Joanne can manage is to roll onto her back and stare dizzily up into the lights as the count goes to “TEN!”

The Winner: Mary Elizabeth Winstead (KO6)

After: “Well, she said she wouldn’t be easy to beat—and she wasn’t,” a tired Mary Winstead said, wiping her sweaty face with a white towel. “This was exactly the kind of hard fight I needed to get things back on track. I hope Joanne is all right, she deserves a lot more fights after this one. She gave me all I could handle, but fortunately I was able to handle it. So I am very satisfied with how this turned out.”

A disappointed Joanne Kelly said: “That knockdown in the 5th—that should have ended it for her, but got up and I was never able to get to her like that again. I’ll give Winnie credit: she is tough, but I am not losing confidence in myself. I know I can win and I will win. This is just a setback. I will just pick myself up and move on.”

Good solid win for Mary Winstead as she got off the deck in the 5th to win it all in the 6th. Joanne Kelly has a right to feel disappointed, she had Mary down, but couldn’t keep her down. It should be interesting where these two fighters go after this one.
