EMILY BETT RICKARDS vs SASHA PIETERSE
(FREE AGENT vs FOXING BOXING)
Results: Lookout  Writing: Archer

Before:  “She doesn’t look that impressive to me,” declares the ever-confident Sasha Pieterse at the pre-fight press conference with a nod at Emily Rickards sitting coolly down the table. “And I think that is a fair comment. I mean surely there is reason poor Em is still unmanaged—she just doesn’t have what it takes to impress prospective managers. They will be even less impressed when I get done with her.”

The needling goes on and on, but Emily just sits there with a tight smile on her face. Sasha  finally takes her seat looking more than a little frustrated at not getting a rise out of her future opponent.

Emily has worn her hair in a tight ponytail, but as she rises, she loosens it and shakes a glorious blonde mane loose. Photographers rush in close to snap picture after picture as Emily obliging offers pose after pose. Takes Emily quite a while to actually make it to the podium. Sasha doesn’t look happy as all attention focuses on her future opponent.

“As Sasha was more than happy to point out, I don’t have a manager, I run my own career and it hasn’t been easy to get bouts. On the other hand of I have won all 3 on my bouts, but what about Sasha here? Well, she’s had 8 fights—but guess what? She’s lost half of them. In fact, she’s lost her last two fights—including one to Willa Holland who I beat. Yes, it is exasperating not to have a manager, but shat good is it to have a manager when you are a just an average fighter? I look forward to adding to Sasha’s loss column and, who knows, maybe I’ll get the attention I deserve—and that she doesn’t!”

Sasha seems surprised at this response. Her mouth drops open and then she snaps it shut. She crosses her arms across her check and pouts as Emily smiles, posing for photos at the podium.

Fight night finds Emily in a crimson red bikini with white trim, white gloves and boots with red lacings. Sasha in hot pink bikini with matching gloves and boots. Emily and Sasha both have their hair pulled back into coiled battle braids. At 5’6 19 year old Sasha is actually taller than the 23 year-old 5’5 Emily, but as they standing facing each other for instructions, Emily crowds Sasha and makes her step back. This gets her a scolding from the referee, but Emily smiles,  having made her point.

R1: If Sasha was actually intimidated by Emily’s pre-fight tactics she shows little sign of it, bounding across the ring to take on the older blonde with some straight rights and lefts to the chest. Emily jabs back with shots to Sasha’s chin, but then neatly swings around and backs up to mid ring. Sasha stays with her, lunging in with hooks to the belly and then some straight on rights and lefts to knock Emily’s forehead back. Em slows up a bit in the aftermath of those forehead punches that seem to have made her head ring. Sasha swarming in with eager punches. Emily blocking some, but getting her head banged from punches striking her head as she tries to hide behind her gloves. Sasha shifts down with some deep hooks to the belly to stand Emily on her tiptoes, but Emily stays on her feet and jabbing stubbornly. Sasha’s face getting bruised from Emily’s jabs, but the youngster just keeps boring in to the bell to win the round on the cards.

R2: Sasha again the aggressor charging at Emily from the bell and swinging for the downs. Emily ducks these opening wild punches and gives Sasha’s chest some sharp jabs to bring her up sharp. Sasha seems to calm down a bit, uses her feet to start moving around Emily and pepper her with steady punches. Emily initially counters well, but then Sasha sees a chance, jumps forward with a looping right to the jaw over Emily’s gloves. Em rocked and stumbles away. Sasha on her with another explosion of wild punches, they are crowd pleasers, but they aren’t landing cleanly enough to do much damage. They do keep Emily disorganized and finally she ends up on the ropes, but older blonde uses clinches to break up Sasha’s attack.  Emily finally able to steady herself late in round and jab well enough to keep Sasha at bay. However Sasha wins wide on the cards.

R3: Emily challenges Sasha’s aggressiveness this round. Sasha heads for Emily who greets her with a hail of well-aimed jabs. Sasha recoiling, dripping blood down her chin from a split lower lip, but she hunches up and bores back in firing straight at Emily’s head. Emily’s turn to have her head knocked, but she seems to recover and comes back at the younger blonde. Toe to toe action as Sasha seems to be trying to use her one inch extra height to hammer down on Emily. She is batting Emily’s head around, but Emily is driving hard hooks into the youngster’s tummy. Neither fighter backing up as this intense exchange goes on and on with only some slight shifting of feet. Then, late in the stanza, Sasha drives a short right cross over Emily’s guard and catches her square on the left eye. Emily stumbles back in shock and Sasha hammers Emily’s belly to tip her forward. Sasha then goes for a quick one-two to the chin. Emily moving her head takes the shots on the cheekbones and strikes back with a strong right hook to Sasha’s belly freezing the PLP boxer just long enough for time to run out. However Sasha takes a third round, but it was close this time.

R4: Emily got a nasty looking swelling around that left eye, but she’s ready for  Sasha when she comes charging back in yet again. Another toe to toe close in battle. This time they are ripping hooks into each other’s torso. Leather just smacking with growing fury into sweat covered flesh as belly, ribs, breasts and sternum take a frenzied shelling, Crowd is screaming with excitement urging the young women on. Two full minutes of this tick by as the two glare into each other’s eyes both determined to overcome the other. Suddenly Sasha Pieterse shudders and lurches forward against Emily. Emily has found Sasha’s solar plexus and she’s got the younger woman hurting. Emily shoves Sasha back and sees her jaw wide open. Instantly, white glove crashes into the unguarded jaw AND SASHA GOES DOWN! Sasha lands on her side, pushes herself up on her right arm and stares in shock at Emily. Emily gives her tight smile and then gets ordered to the neutral corner by the ref. Sasha makes a great effort and rises to her feet. She stands on shaky legs but gives Emily a defiant glare as the fight resumes. Emily charges right back in. Sasha has her jab going and backs away with some skill. Emily unable to bring more decisive punching to bear before the bell rings. Might back been a close round but that knockdown gave Emily Rickards her first round of the contest. Long, slow walk to her corner for Sasha, who all but collapses onto her stool as her corner crew work on desperately during the break.

R5: Sasha making an effort to move quickly towards Emily, but all it takes is a couple of quick hooks to the belly to bring the PLP fighter to a screeching halt. Sasha on the defensive as Sasha stalks her wounded quarry with a circling attack, rights and lefts licking out. Some go to the belly, some are feints allowing Emily to hit in the head and Sasha’s growing sluggish in her reactions.  As the clock nears the second minute, Emily has seen enough and she makes her big move. She slams Sasha to the solar plexus making the younger blonde hunch up protectively but opening her head. Emily fires a crunching right that catches Sasha in the temple and then a left smashes against the side of her chin. SASHA GOES DOWN! Sasha’s arms fall to her side and she just crashes forward onto to her face, legs flopping around from the impact.  Referee takes one look at the wrecked blonde and waves it off.

The Winner: Emily Bett Rickards KO5.

After:  “I knew I could beat her, but it was harder than I had expected,” Emily says looking over as a dazed Sasha Pieterse is revived and guided from the ring. “She talks too much, but really she has a lot of talent and I hope she’ll be all right.  What’s next for me? Another fight very soon—I hope. I mean, really, I’m 4-0 now and I’ve knocked out every girl I faced.  I realize that might scare some managers or fighters, but I know there are plenty of fighters who would welcome a chance to break my streak. How about it? Who will step up first?”

Sasha Pieterse insists on speaking to the press that night, though she looks and sounds shaken by the defeat: “I won the first three rounds. I was winning the 4th when she got that knockdown. That changed everything, but I want everyone to know I didn’t quit. I got knocked out. I will be back. Smarter next time and this won’t happen to me again! I won’t lose again!”

Sasha’s defiant words suddenly are lost in a choke of emotion and tears begin to roll down her  bruised cheeks. All the pain of her loss seems have suddenly overwhelmed her and she shakily gets to her feet mumbling “I need to go.” Foxfire communications director Beth Harnois quickly concludes the press session as teammate Ashley Benson appears and puts her arm around Sasha and leads her backstage. Truly this was a painful loss for normally cocky youngster.

Interesting fight with Sasha getting off to an early lead, but she couldn’t seem to hurt Emily Rickards in those rounds like she was hurt in the 4th. It seems clear now that Sasha never recovered from that knockdown and R5 was Emily finishing the job. Another KO win for the unmanaged Emily should earn some needed attention, at least in terms of getting another fight soon. That’s not always the way the fed works, so we’ll have to see. Sasha finds herself slipping to an under.500 record (4-5-0) and no doubt she and her management will be looking to end her now 3 fight losing streak.
