Margot Robbie vs. Emily VanCamp
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

The gorgeous Margot looking every bit like another Aussie comer. She's been on a roll and is clearly looking forward to a chance to get into the ring against a top quality opponent. "Em's a good measuring stick for anyone," she says with a smile. "She's a former champion, one of the top bantams in the world. If you can beat her, you can fight with anybody in the division. And, tonight, that's what I'll prove."

"She's gotten off to a good start in her career, sure," says Emily with a shake of the head. "And, she's beaten some girls. But, she's not in my league. Not yet. And probably not ever."

ROUND ONE:
Margot, as usual, looking to advance. She's got the gloves high, the chin tucked. She wants to use the jab to open up Emily, then the right to back her up. VanCamp willing to go over to the defensive early. She gives ground and fights in counter. Emily likes middle distances, and she's able to negotiate those, but Robbie's aggression quickly becomes a problem. The Aussie keeps pressuring, forcing Em to either cover up or back up. Instead of fighting in counter, the former champ spends most of her time in retreat, taking fire, trying to block and dodge. She's not getting off, and she's hearing it from her corner. Robbie's getting the left home, able to follow up on it and put punches together. She's not hurting Emily, but she is touching her up right to the bell, claiming the first round and the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:
Robbie coming forward again. VanCamp giving ground again. Emily wants to work the counters, but, again, the Aussie's barrages begin suppressing her. The former champ's not just taking now, she's taking heavy shot from a confident Margot, who's winning the physical battle here. And, then, she's not. VanCamp drops a perfect counter over Margot's left hand and Robbie staggers, stumbles, and almost goes down! And, at that moment, Emily VanCamp shows up to take over from whomever that girl who spent a round and a half backing up was. The former champ goes into attack mode, setting Margot up with an accurate left jab and bashing her with some screaming right hands. Robbie's in full retreat and quickly ends up trapped against the ropes where Emily has her way for the final minute of the round, taking the second wide and evening things at 19.

ROUND THREE:
Now it's Emily who wants to advance. The taller VanCamp using her reach to get the jab home early, walk in behind it, make with those heavy right hands again. Margot now giving ground as the former champ consolidates last round's gains and grabs control of the fight. Margot's retreating, taking, getting scuffed. Until, she's not. It's a pretty short right hook in counter from the Aussie, and it sends VanCamp stumbling! It's a complete 180 from last round with Emily now hurt and the Aussie smelling blood. And, Margot's attack is every bit as vicious and every bit as effective as VanCamp's was in the second. Now it's Emily on the ropes taking and Margot, literally GROWLING as she puts everything she has behind WHISTLING right hands that batter VanCamp, shake her legs, and leave her wobbly and shaken at the bell. Margot's back in charge and back in the lead 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:
Robbie shows her relative inexperience early. The Aussie tries to do too much. She tries to get right back after VanCamp, and, there's nothing wrong with that idea, but Emily's shaken off the third round and makes that clear by picking Margot with some hard right hands, stopping her advance and throwing her onto the defensive. Margot takes some time to adjust, still trying to press a dead offensive much like the British at Gallipoli, but, by the middle of the round, Robbie's stopped wasting those efforts and  begun working behind her jab. She regains the initiative from Emily, who holds her ground but slowly begins to be forced to the counter. VanCamp does a good job, as always, with the counter punches, but Robbie rules the day late. It's a bit TOO late, however, as Em's early efforts earn her the round and even the fight at 38.

ROUND FIVE:
Margot keeps the roll she was on late in the fourth going. She's found something now, and she's taking full advantage. She's beating VanCamp to punches, slipping her counters, responding to the misses with hard right hands. VanCamp forced backward by Margot's volume of shot. She tries to stabilize, but can't get it done. Her offensive efforts mostly amount to single punches landed here or there in the midst of backing or covering as the Aussie lays down heavy suppressive fire. Late in the round, Emily gets trapped on the ropes and the results are not pretty. Margot bodies up and bangs away, buffeting VanCamp along the ropes as Emily, though unhurt, is forced to keep the guard high and take right to the bell. It's a shutout round for Robbie, who now leads 48-47.

ROUND SIX:
Again, Margot build on a big round, but, this time, she's more careful. She's working solidly behind her left, not forcing, not opening herself up to VanCamp. The thing about Em, though, is, you don't HAVE to open yourself up for her to GET you, because she's that good, and, almost from the beginning of the round, the former champ begins timing Robbie and SMITING her with perfectly-placed counter punches. Margot's not just getting picked up, she's getting scuffed up, and in a big way. And, the results are predictable. Her offense slows as she becomes hesitant to punch, fearing another nasty response from Emily, and VanCamp is quickly into the breach, going over to the offensive, putting punches together beautifully, and spending the second half of the round forcing  Margot to duck and cover. When the bell rings, VanCamp's countered Robbie's shutout with one of her own, and the fight's even again at 57.

ROUND SEVEN:
Emily determined to do something neither fighter's managed tonight...win two rounds in a row. She's after Margot from the opening bell, pressing the offensive, touching the Aussie up again, scuffing her, forcing her to retreat. And, then, the pattern of this fight reasserts itself via a short right hand from Robbie that catches Emily on the chin and sends her stumbling backward. VanCamp is HURT and Robbie's over to the offensive! Is this a great fight or what? Margot quickly makes with the heavy leather. VanCamp is driven before the Aussie, forced back against the same ropes where she's taken some serious beating already tonight, and, basically, savaged for two full minutes. VanCamp's legs are shaken repeatedly, and, several times, the referee looks poised to put an end to it, but Emily manages to do just enough to keep him at bay. By the final bell, the former champ is a wreck, right eye closing, nose bloodied, legs looking close to shot. She's standing, but that's all she's doing. Robbie now leads 67-66, but round seven has done a lot more than give Margot a slim lead, it's clearly reduced her opponent.

ROUND EIGHT:
Robbie looking for the finisher, but doing so in a sound, clinical manner. VanCamp all defensive now, can't trust those long legs, has to protect that right eye, so she can't hold canvas. Instead, she engages in a fighting retreat, trying to limit the leather she's taking from the Aussie and counter back in spots. It's good tactical stuff, but Margot smells blood in the water, as do a lot of folks in the stands, so, it comes as no surprise when a solid right hand lands and BLONDE GIRL DOWN. Except. It's AUSSIE BLONDE DOWN! Where VanCamp finds that right is anyone's guess, but she finds it, she lands it, and she drops Margot to her rear end with it. Emily is quick to a neutral corner, watching the count closely, and you can almost SEE the former champ's shoulders sag when Robbie gets to her feet. The referee waives VanCamp forward and, on she comes. Emily pours in all her reserves, backing Margot up, forcing her to the ropes, and firing everything including the proverbial kitchen sink at the Aussie beauty. Robbie keeps the guard high, takes, jabs back in counter on occasion, hangs on...and then has her knees buckled by a left hook! VanCamp follows with a straight right that SNAPS Robbie's head back and sends her bouncing off the ropes and stumbling forward, grabbing Emily to stay upright. A short left uppercut blasts Margot back into the ropes, her knees buckling again. Robbie grabs the ropes to stay on her feet, but IT'S OVER! The referee leaps between the fighters and bundles Margot to safety and your winner by TKO8 in never-say-die fashion is Emily VanCamp!

AFTER:
VanCamp clearly all in. Face puffy. Right eye closed. She's a battered beauty, but a victorious one. "Wasn't easy in there," she acknowledges. "She caught me with some good shots. She can hit, like all the Aussies. But, she made a big mistake. When she had me, she didn't finish me. And, if you get me, you'd BETTER finish me. Because, if you leave me standing, I AM going to come back and starch your ass."
