Blake Lively (5'10”, 27, Record: 11-18-0) vs Jennifer Carpenter (5'10”, 36, 3-5-1)
by Lookout/simgrrl

Internet speculation is the winner might be near the front of a long line for a bout with the Upton-Landry winner. And the winner of THAT fight could be in a title fight soon afterward!

Before: It's tough out there for an independent fighter, so when Carpenter got a call offering Blake Lively, she had no choice but to accept. Carpenter coming off a 14 month layoff in February, fumbled an opportunity to upset tough Odette Yustman, losing by TKO in the closing minute. Then battered beautiful Aussie brunette Phoebe Tonkin in a gruesome bloodbath. Lively thought to a “step up” from Tonkin, but below Yustman. So this will be an opportunity for 'Carp' to show just where she stands in relation to women considered to be her “competition.”

“I've set my sights higher than Lively,” Jennifer says frankly. “I've won a third of my fights; Lively less than 40% of hers. To get where I want to go, I've got to blow the doors off girls like her. I messed up letting Yustman off the hook, but she was at least a brunette. This...this blond...you don't put them in their place, promoters will find another brunette who can. I hope I don't hurt her too badly.”

Jennifer Carpenter not a household name, but the girls of the FCBA know her by reputation. Three times she's pushed Yvonne Strahovski into the 10th round, and earlier this year she forced Yustman to get up off the canvas to win a late TKO. Wins (Ashley Scott & Taylor Schilling), and a draw with Grace Park, gave fans a hint of what could have been had Carpenter began her boxing career ten years earlier.

Blake Lively paying particular attention to Phoebe Tonkin's bloody face after Carpenter finished with it; and she admitted it shook her. “I'm too pretty to end up like that. I make my living with my face, after all. Boxing's great, but if I had gotten pounded like that; my manager and my family would both be after me to get out and take up something safe, like being a stunt woman. We studied her video and I'm well aware of her right hand. When Theron and I sparred, she didn't hesitate to use it when I dropped my left. I don't know how good Carpenter's body is, but we'll find out tonight.”

Jennifer Carpenter in the same black basque top and knickers she covered with Tonkin's blood; red boots & gloves and long straight brown hair. Lively not letting any grass grow under her feet, making it clear that in this battle, 'Blond is beautiful' - and sexy. Lively with little black three triangle bikini, butt cheeks bare, low-cut black shoes and white gloves (better to show Carpenter's blood?)
* * * *
During R1: Carpenter with something to prove. Jenny C jumping on Lively from the get-go, attacking with big, sweeping, right hands behind a competent, if not spectacular jab. Jenny setting Lively up with the stick (left); then beating her with the 'club' (right). Lively living up to her name, stepping nimbly to her right (into the jab, but away from Carpenter's right hand). Jenny C piling up points with the jab, shocking Lively several times to the body with riveting rights to the ribs as Lively circles away from her power. Lively counter-punching in spurts, using a stop-n-go technique (stops circling, pop the right hand, then circle right again). She does it twice, snapping Carpenter's head back each time. But Lively forced to stay on her 'bicycle' as Jennifer Carpenter applies pressure from bell-to-bell to win the round.

R2: More Carpenter pressure. Jennifer fighting out of an upright stance, long and limber body supple as she advances, often pawing the jab rather than snapping it, but she isn't afraid to throw the right - something she does often and well! Lively getting scuffed up, but not hurt in their exchanges, most of which go Carpenter's way. Lively showing off a pair of gorgeous, graceful, dancing in, punching, then springing away either avoiding Jenny’s counter, or at least taking a glancing blow. But when Lively stands still, and gives Carpenter time to set her feet, the tall, wiry, brunette proves she can hit with authority - if not raw power. Carpenter with unrelenting pressure the latter half of the round, taking the initiative from the blond and never giving it back as she charges to a 2-0 lead.

R3: More of the same. Lively unable to find an answer to Carpenter's pressure tactics, having trouble getting going; hemorrhaging points. Before the halfway point, Lively hurt by a shot to the liver, clinches and is bull rushed to the ropes where Jennifer C lashes her up and down, driving her sideways along the ropes into the corner. Lively hunkers down, ducking and dodging, shucking and jiving, trying not to expose herself and give Carpenter a clean look. Carpenter showing restraint, not being lured into making an exhausting 'all-in' assault, but carefully setting Lively up; looking for the single shot to “switch off” the blonde. Jennifer thinks she finds it with about twenty or thirty seconds left, when she puts together a three punch combination (left-right to the breasts, right uppercut) that buckles Blake's knees! Lively folds forward, arms around Carpenter's slender hips, her head behind Jenny’s right hip, her cheek pressed against Jennifer's bottom. Referee has to work to untangle Lively who is hanging on for dear life. By the time he gets them parted and checks that Lively isn't too damaged to continue, there's only seconds remaining. Carpenter whistles a desperation right hand that just misses Blake's chin, bouncing off her upper chest harmlessly. Big round is all Carpenter (wide) and she's on cruise control as she breezes to a big 3-0 lead.

R4: Blake's corner gets in the act. After playing spectator as their girl dug herself a hole, the Academy “braintrust” puts in an appearance in the person of Head Trainer Natasha Ragozina who deigns to climb the steps to impart words of wisdom to her young blond. Lively nodding in understanding, then Janet Jones chips in some advice of her own. Blake taking a deep breath just before Stone puts in her mouthguard at the bell. Lively starts out still circling to her right, away from Carpenter's left. Then suddenly stops and reverses, moving into the brunette's right hand behind her own stiff left jab. Blake pistoning her left in Jennifer's face, keeping her blinking. Carpenter cocks the right, starts to throw it, then resets and fakes the right. Resetting again, she lets fly...but it goes high as Lively ducks and drives a right cross into the flat belly of Jennifer Carpenter. 'Carp' grunts as Lively's fist sinks deep, then goes reeling back from an overhand left high on the head. Crowd - most of whom to this point likely day-dreaming of having a drink with that gorgeous blond Tractorpull reporter - suddenly come alive! Blake bombing away at long range, most of them juuuuuust off target. Carpenter doing more clinching, bogging down the bomb-throwing blond bombshell. At the bell, it's clearly Lively's best round of the fight, so far, and enough to (finally) get on the scoreboard; breaking a three-oh streak of Carpenter success.

R5: More Blake. Now that she's tasted some success, Lively looking more confident in her approach and more up-beat in her demeanor. She “looks” like a fighter as she steps forward behind that jab, popping the punch that, two rounds earlier, had all the snap of a wet noodle! Lively still moving to her left, keeping her jab in Carpenter's face is preventing Jennifer from setting herself to throw the right. (What took so long?) Now it's Lively applying pressure and Carpenter unable to mount an effective offense for much of the round. Carpenter picking up Blake's bosom every so often, more of an annoyance than anything, but it's clear Lively's not pleased about it (Blake doesn't have a lot of padding up there to cushion the impact of Carpenter's bony knuckles!) Blake answering with right hands to the head, raising a nice mouse on Jennifer's left eye and, late, puffing up her lower lip. A second solid performance by Blake Lively has her right back in this thing, as she wins her second straight round to close Carpenter's lead to 1 round (or 2-3 points, depending on the judge).

R6: Carpenter's corner agitated, barking at her between rounds. It hasn't reached the 'yur blowin' it kid' stage - yet - but the horrific images of late let-downs against Yustman and Strahovski have to be in their minds - if not Jennifer's! And Blake's!! Lively out....uh...lively, sweeping across the space between them at the bell, stepping inside Carpenter's sneaky surprise right hand lead and smacking her flush in the mouth! Jennifer gob-smacked, stops in her tracks, giving Blake the opportunity to load up and....hit her again! Carpenter spilled onto her butt, legs in a V in front of her, leaning back on her hands, her eyes fluttering rapidly. Blake Lively almost trips over Jennifer's feet as she staggers past, as much in shock at the flash knockdown as Jennifer! Lively goes to the wrong corner, has to be re-directed. Meanwhile, Carpenter is getting slowly - sheepishly - to her feet. She looks more embarrassed than hurt, but that knockdown, while Lively was already in the midst of a comeback, can't be good news for her. Lively closes, but Carpenter forces a clinch and they reel around chest-to-chest for several seconds, each thumping and cuffing the other in the sides without doing any damage. Lively dominates the remainder of the round, but is unable to pry open Carpenter's stubborn defenses so she can land a second big punch. When the bell sounds, everyone - even the judges - know that Blake Lively has won the round handily and, in the process, brought this fight all even at 3 apiece!

R7: Cue Carpenter Comeback! Jennifer, realizing her dreams of a career in boxing are hanging by a thread, shakes off the ennui of the previous three rounds and comes out with fire in her eyes! As Blake circles toward Carpenter's right, Jennifer steps to her right, slamming into Blake body-on-body, then hammers her mid-section with a left hook! Lively, body-shocked, reaches to clinch, but Carpenter shrugs her off and cuffs her behind the left ear with a right hand, sending Blake stumbling to her right. JCarp moving with her, pops Blake in the face with a crisp left, then another sweeping, overhand right keeps her reeling sideways. This time, Blake rights herself and manages a clinch. As they wrestle and squirm, two tall sweaty women, Carpenter keeps her fists pumping, plundering vulnerable blonde paunch with digging lefts and rights that don't land with a lot of power, but the sheer weight of shot overwhelms Blake's abs. Down the stretch, it's all Jennifer Carpenter, stopping the hemorrhaging and re-taking the scoring lead, 4-3, with just three rounds to go!

R8: Blake leaning back in her corner, Stone and Jones pulling and tugging at the front of her bikini, trying to pump air back in their deflated blond battler. Stone demonstrating something with her right hand as she kneels in front of Blake between her open knees. Behind Blake, Janet Jones massages those tight shoulders, yammering in Blake's left ear and drowning out Stone's sage advice with her own inane commentary. Blake still on her stool at the bell, scrambles to get out of her corner before she's trapped by the on-rushing Jennifer Carpenter. Lively loping to her right, staying well away from Carpenter, her brow furrowed with worry. Jennifer drives a straight right to Blake's forehead, then a right sweeping across her cleavage almost dislocates her top! CARPENTER'S DOWN! A left by Lively chopping down over Carpenter's right shoulder as she follows-thru, clips the side of JCarp's jaw and spills Jennifer face-first on the canvas! Carpenter gets to her knees, then her arms buckle and she falls on her chest, butt in the air. Lively nervously pacing as Carpenter again struggles to rise, using the ropes to slowly, agonizingly, drag herself up to her feet, swaying unsteadily. Referee checks her carefully, asks a couple of questions, looks about to wave it off when Jennifer grabs his hands and (pleads?) says something that causes him to reconsider. He lets the bout go on and Lively hops forward to finish the wounded brunette. Carpenter pawing with the left, right at her chin as Blake stops and pops, swiveling Jennifer's head. She grabs the top rope and hangs on....Lively backs off, looks at the referee who gestures at her to 'get to work'. Lively steps up and gives Carpenter's unprotected body a three punch combination, although it appears her heart isn't in it. She again backs off. When the referee still doesn't stop the fight, Blake turns into a left hook to the belly, then cuffs Carpenter in the back of the head and (it looks like) pulls her forward and down to her knees. Then Lively turns and glares at the referee, angrily shouting at him, mouthpiece and spittle spraying his face as she confronts him with her fists clenched at her hips. The referee waves his arms overhead and drops to one knee to console Carpenter. Your winner by KO8, Blake Lively.

After: Lively livid postfight when she arrives with her entourage. Stone and Jones at her elbows, Stone with a tight hold of Blake's right biceps, hissing in her ear. Lively shaking her head. Jones on her left, grabs their girl and shakes her, talking sense to the red-faced blonde. When Lively finally speaks, she's all about Carpenter; her guts; her courage; how well she fought those early rounds, etc. “She had me in trouble early,” Blake says graciously - and accurately. “Forced me to make quite a few changes on the fly. I had my hands full all the way - until I caught her with that left hand. She was completely out on her feet after that. The girl was helpless. Putting her down again was awfully hard, and not something I'm proud of.”
Asked what she said to the referee at the end, Lively started to answer, then Stone grabbed her again and shook her head. Lively hesitated, then shrugged. “I don't recall. Something in the heat of the moment like that, it's just raw emotion. Probably not important,” she said, giving Stone a look that said otherwise.

Lively brushed off several follow-up questions about the referee and the way the fight ended, finally Janet Jones stepped in and said, “You got questions about the officiating, ask the commissioner. We got nothing more to say on the subject.”

It was quite a bit later before Jennifer Carpenter was allowed to appear, having been held up for a second concussion examination before she was cleared to leave her dressing room. “I gave it all I had,” the willowy brunette said. “I thought I was finally going to get over the hump, but she caught me and after that...it's all just a blur.”

“What'd you say to the referee after the first knockdown?” she was asked.

“I don't know what I said to anyone. I mean, I know I said something....I got a quick look at the video and I saw my lips moving, so I must've. But I can't remember what. Maybe I told him it was Friday? What is it anyway, Friday? Saturday?”
Tess Valmore wanted Jennifer's thoughts on whether the fight should have been stopped earlier.

“Not my call,” she said. “I wasn't going to quit, my corner didn't throw in the towel, so how's he supposed to 'know' what to do? I was upright and wanted to fight, so he let it go. If Lively's too big a wimp to knock somebody out, maybe she's in the wrong game. I'd of done it to her in a heartbeat,” Carpenter said.

Three days later in an interview with Boxing World Online, however, she walked back her statement, somewhat - blaming the excitement of the moment after a disappointing loss. “I got no problems with Lively,” she said, closing that book.
