BIANCA KAJLICH vs MILENA GOVICH
(Words: Bonzo / Results: Lookout!)

Before: After unexpectedly winning her first title by beating Charlize Theron in 2012, things have been going downhill for Milena Govich: she lost the title to Moon Bloodgood and failed to win any of her three fights that year. Relegated to subsequent inactivity in 2014, she’s now trying to stage a comeback, and Bianca Kajlich sounds like a good idea. Here are two underrated - and relatively unknown – welterweights who both have a good reputation with pundits, but who haven’t really made a significant splash in either their acting or fighting careers. But Bianca has now developed quite the dark-horse rep recently, with her brutal TKO of Bridget Regan considered the equivalent to Patton-Righetti in shocking big-girl upsets. Bianca’s reportedly close to a management deal, and she’s usually one of the girls mentioned in what you might call the welterweight reinvigoration plan.

Naturally, opinions differ when you ask the girls themselves. “I don’t know what the deal’s supposed to be with Bianca”, Milena tells the press. “Okay, so she beat up Regan, but that’s nothing to build your career on if you can’t follow it up with other fights. If she actually were one of those real-deal girls who could potentially reinvigorate the division, she’d have a manager. Myself, I’ve been training with the best welter gym for years, and I tell you, Bianca might look like a fighter, but with her measly four official bouts, she just lacks the stamina to compete with a former welter champ.” Okay, what does Bianca think of that put-down? “I’m not surprised she’s talking like that. She’s clutching at the last straws. There are still people who wonder why she was ever signed up with her stable at all. I mean, Bonzo has beauties like Ali Larter or Nadia Bjorlin, and, well, don’t get me wrong, but Milena just doesn’t push the same buttons.” Ouch – the tone is set.

Fight: R1:  Milena off to a routine start: more controlled than we’ve seen from her in the past, employing the jab education from the Bonzo gym to measure the distance to Bianca. Govich behind her jab, she’s not taking any risks, but not allowing Kajlich to close to the body. This is no flashy first-round big-girl knockout battle: both girls have seen enough tapes of each other to fear their respective punching power, both have a lot to lose, and that perhaps explains the slow approach. Govich looks dominant with her jabs, but she’s never following up with force; Bianca accepts the deal – Milena takes first points on activity and control.

R2: Govich with the stance we’ve seen in the first round: strong-shouldered, mid-ring jabbing with methodical precision, trying to drive her body forwards, trying to hold and expend her ground. This time, though, Bianca is more actively engaging to mix up the punches, seeing that she can’t allow Govich to continue that precision distance game. Kajlich taking some chances here: gambling a right hand that could have easily missed, but catches Milena full-impact on temple. Govich rocked a bit, losing some of her precision in return, backpedaling and no longer the jab machine she tried to be. More open fight after that: Milena more edgy, less focused stance allows Bianca to connect more; the mix-up suits Kajlich well, she was unable to get close before, now she’s able to hurt Milena to the body, driving rights to gut, no longer getting stung by jabs as Milena has obviously lost some of her composure.

R3: Bianca trying to be aggressive early, but Milena finds her precision again, stinging Kajlich into compliance behind a regular jab. This is impressive stuff from Milena: we’ve rarely seen her so methodical, so cool – this is a game plan right here. Kajlich adjusts, settles to controlled defense in the first minute. Bianca throwing the occasional gamblin’ strong-right out from the distance, so she won’t get taken to the rings, but she’s clearly not able to dictate mid-ring terms when Milena keeps up the action like this. Govich’s a bit slower in the last minute, though, and as if on cue, Bianca’s there to pounce. Thick rights to abdomen, a sweet one-two combination to chin and nose gets through the Govich defense late. Milena’s not wobbly on her toned legs, but Kajlich obviously packs incredible power in them hands – fight increasingly boils down to how long Govich will be able to hold her precision jab game intact; each time she lets up, Kajlich’s there with a power punch.

R4:  Govich struggles with her jab early – Kajlich partly successful in subverting her, prevents her from getting into the necessary groove. We see Bianca bobbing and weaving, very agilely – she’s supply moving in and out of clinches, mixing up long and strong rights to the body with short hooks when she’s close. This is strenuous stuff for Bianca’s energy reserves, but it’s working well: she’s got Milena on the fence about whether to consent to a punching duel close to the body, or follow the game plan and stay true to her jab. Not a good round for Milena as she fails to do either correctly - Kajich’s quicker than we know her, deftly using surprising footwork to veer backwards when those jabs keep coming, only to punch her way close up again. Govich’s defenses flailing as a result of the indecision – she’s not really succeeding in using her power the right way. Bianca with some awesome combinations in the middle: one-two, one-two, has brunette opponent stumbling on the spot, swaying in the wind before those thick legs come back to help her fall into the clinch. Govich unmoved; she’s always reverting back to the original mode, but unable to sustain it for defining stretches of the round. Bianca quicker, sharper here – Govich falling flat to actually hurt her girl with her jab; when Bianca gets through, on the other hand, she’s on point, coolly collecting the points on offer.

R5:  For the first time, Milena’s jab almost non-existent: punishment ensues. Bianca really crowding Milena with volleying shots to the body: driving her backwards into ropes. Govich hurt: eyes ice-cold, face colouring red: tree-trunk legs solid, though. Kajlich’s on top, getting more precise by the minute. Bianca with composure: these aren’t wild attempts to knock Govich out, but she’s clearly getting the better of the brunette here. Bludgeoning right hand to chest scuffs Milena up, then Kajlich turns directions, leading MG alone the ropes, surprising opponent with slick-slap shots to nose, chin. Govich increasingly frustrated: power hasn’t really made a dent in Bianca’s armour so far, probably blames strategy for that. Wide round to Kajlich who’s looking amazing now: just a bit sweaty, but confident, hot as hell, eyes brimming with ass-kicking delight.

R6: Milena changing tack early: not trying to keep Bianca at bay, actively engages her. First time Govich’s actually making her power felt, driving her hard to ropes. She’s trying to stack her girl up here, using crossed-arms, then punching with both hands, head low, really letting her fists find the sorely missing rhythm now. Kajlich impressed: she’s trying to hit back, but getting a bit out-punched now that those fists actually connect with force. Bianca lumping up, her knees buckling after a robust right into her chest, straightens up to respond to Milena’s ready chin, but Govich’s really quick now, weaves just out in time, before punishing Kajlich for trying with spearing rights and lefts to body. Govich is losing some tempo at the end, but Kajlich’s unable to cash in on it. Govich’s finally making her power felt – not really giving Bianca pain, but dictating terms through the sixth round, even without jab working.

R7:  Milena separates herself: it’s the jab again, but it’s a powerful one now, and it’s really putting the hurt on Bianca. Govich with authority – looking perky – mid-ring stance in the beginning, strong shoulders churning out the punches, one-by-one she’s got Bianca on the retreat. Kajlich not weak: she’s slipping counters in between, but Govich is alert, counter-countering most of them, while steadily driving Bianca backwards to ropes. In the pocket, Govich punches Bianca: rights into tits, jabs into nose, all the way. Kajlich looking a bit forlorn there, but she’s stabilizing later in the round, not wilting under pressure. Bianca fights herself out of the corner, her upgraded counters battering Govich to a standstill late in the round. Sweet welter battle now – finally those fists are really on the hunt, prying to drop the other girl. Audience more engaged now that the strategy is loosened on both sides - big girls giving their all. Excruciating body-punch by Govich to Kajlich thorax has audience groaning in sympathy; thunderous wide rights into Milena’s side show signs of wilt in return. Early dominance enough for Milena to take the round, but it is crunch time for both now.

R8: Govich jabbing in the beginning, looking dominant. Increased pressure applied to Bianca by Milena – those jabs punching Kajlich on her mouth have her head jolting back, dizzying her with sheer power. Govich following up: really finding her girl now, as Kajlich stares on in respect. Bianca deep in the ropes, Milena on her, driving thick punches to chin, slamming her forearm across Bianca’s breasts. No wilting, though. Kajlich obviously out-punched here, but she’s resilient as hell, looking almost unfazed after adjusting to the increasing fist power of the early minute. This is Govich at her best: sickening power applied to Bianca, years of gym training going into those body-busting cruelties – this is Govich trying to find the off switch in Bianca’s power supply, almost always targeting straight to body: punished breasts bouncing back and forth, gut tested, knees under immense pressure. Bianca taking a shocking amount of Govich’s best body punches – surely this can’t go on forever? – reduced to vague, faint counters, but hands still up.

Milena giving her all: broad sweaty back glistening, but clearly enjoying herself. But as the last minute’s arrived, Bianca hasn’t turned into the rag-doll those Milena-punches were supposed to make her. Then: first punch Kajlich gets on target after a while, a tummy-busting right that has Govich wincing on impact. That’s like a cue for Bianca: shockingly, she’s now actually punching back as if nothing happened. That’s a one-two combination taking Milena on her left, then her right temple – reaction late, hands shoot up in vain – then an awkward left hook in between Govich’s belly and breasts that has Milena strangely groaning with an ugly “guu-h”. Govich obviously a bit shocked by the reaction: unable to impede any longer on break-away Kajlich. What a brawny, powerful look for Bianca: things take another turn for the worse, as far as Govich’s concerned, when Kajlich’s right fist – probably punching the hardest punch of the night – connects with Milena’s right cheek. Eyes roll back, dizzy look – Govich is losing power, stooping forward in an instant, literally falling INTO TWO WIDE right haymakers, coming from Bianca’s hips – bam! bam! – picking the brunette up brutally on her lower left chin. Smirk Kajlich, as Govich crumples on the spot: proud brunette folding up, knees giving way, body unhinged – and within that second Milena’s reduced to an unmoving big-girl heap on the ground, the sorry victim of a bad-ass Bianca Kajlich KO8!

After: Govich lying on her side, mouth touching ring, lips parted, sleepy, knocked OUT. Kajlich’s triumphant atop her victim, bellowing out her joy. Just one of those great welter nights – strategic bout in the beginning, then nothing but power. Bianca explains her resilience: “fighting a Bonzo girl, stamina is key. They usually aren’t particularly great technicians nor KO artists, so what I had to do was make sure I could take the punches, and always be ready to punch back.” Whew, sounds easy. Experts discussing Govich’s game plan after the fight: most agree that this was something of an attempt to emulate Righetti’s long-term dominance by way of jab power, but lacking in exact execution; robbing Govich of KO power along the way. Kajlich praised: she did what she needed to do to destruct Govich’s match plan, had the stamina when she needed it, proved big KO power in the end – this is what advertising for a management looks like; most pundits predict this woman can be a danger to every active welter.
