BEFORE: The entire Echo Arena still dwells on Siobhan Donaghy's incredible pounding of Amelle Berrabah but Jade Ewen promises to outshine that performance herself as she targets Keisha Buchanan as her next victim. The old Sugababes are one up on the night however Jade is the favorite coming into this bout having been just a single victory away from securing a shot at the Jenna Louise Coleman's flyweight title this past month. Those plans were destroyed by Ola Jordan who gave Jade a heavy beating yet that result means little when a personal Sugababes pride is on line instead and despite Keisha being active in the bantamweight in the past, she's gonna have her hands full with a Top 10 ranked opponent.
Both girls stare at each other with visible disdain during the introductions and refuse to touch gloves. It's also worth reminding that Jade directly replaced Keisha in the line-up back in 2008 and while she never became a lead singer as Buchanan was in the band's heyday, she has vowed to improve her status through celebrity boxing and keep everyone aware that Keisha truly belongs to the past in more ways than one!
Keisha Buchanan wears a red bikini top, black knickers and red gloves. Jade Ewen wears a blue bikini with a white trim and blue gloves. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the flyweight division.
Round 1:
Jade seeks immediate redemption after that Ola Jordan disaster and swings to Keisha's temples however she fails to make her shots count as the older singer dekes around them back & forth and responds with a solid jabbing straight between the arms and tags the cheeks to stun Ewen on her heels. More confident striking follows and Keisha jumps into a furious effort to smack the fellow singer back to the ropes while Jade just covers up and allows Keisha to take over the running and reverts into chaotic defence that brings her little success especially after Buchanan rips into her cleavage and sends butt-in-ropes late in the round to secure a much needed confidence boost against the title hopeful.
Round 2:
Another furious rush goes wayward for Ewen who bounces off the guard and allows Buchanan to counter her to the body, clipping the mounds and later tearing into her breadbasket. Jade has to clinch the older singer and only grazes her mouth in a mistimed cross hook tangle before Keisha opens up from both sides and punishes the ribcage, sending Ewen into defensive circles again. The fight settles down in mid range but Keisha's really buzzing now and tries to bury Jade under a high barrage to make up for the lack of close contact. Jade has to move quickly to avoid all the punches thrown at her but instead of bullying the older girl, she refuses to engage into a higher gear and some people inside the Echo Arena begin to wonder if Ola Jordan's done some serious mental damage to Jade's otherwise well known aggressive attire?
Round 3:
Ewen still hasn't hit top gear and must clinch a rampant Buchanan all the way through the opening minute; Keisha scowls in disapproval but still leans on the London born opponent and rips into her body before Jade finally shows some core strenght and bumps her nemesis off and beats her for a quick overhand on the eye. Keisha loses her plot briefly and when she tries to resume the harrassing, she meets another brutal hook on the other eye and leaps into safety instead whereas Jade ups her tempo and starts swinging around the temples more efficiently again. Buchanan runs the clock down though and hangs solid on the back foot trying to tease the younger singer into a trap, yet Ewen doesn't take the bait and circles back herself happy enough to finally land some meaningful shots after a difficult start to this contest.
Round 4:
Keisha storms out of her stool but misreads Jade's dancing routine and slips by for a wayward overhand before getting laced across the boobs as Ewen settles into an uppercut frenzy thereafter and shatters the guard aside making repeated contact with the jaw. Keisha barks in pain and has to cover up but is rooted to the spot and has Jade splitting her gloves and rocking the head back & forth as a result. She leaps back to the ropes but almost trips over her own feet and fails to embrace Ewen's charge; the younger of the two singers crashes into an open face and tears the skin on Buchanan's cheeks with a high tempo jabbing before switching low on the exposed ribs and digging some extra leather right at the death. She bumps a wobbly Keisha spinning back to her stool and that's the title belt challenger finally arriving at the races much to Mutya Buena's dismay!
Round 5:
Jade dominates the early hassling and makes Keisha think better off it after landing a couple of hooks on the eye and working on the cut cheek again. Buchanan tries to wrestle the Londoner away but slips for more ribcage assault as well and gets overwhelmed punch after punch and starts to sink on her knees come the half-way mark. She reverts into an earmuff cover but that does little to stop Jade who thumps several jabs between the mediocre guard and pounds Keisha into the neutral corner down the stretch where she resumes the midriff punishment and drops Buchanan's guard to the point she can switch up high again and crack a late series on the temples that shuts Keisha's eyes and sends her into another wobbly walk back to her stool.
Round 6:
Keisha's a bit banged up here and displays extended swelling on the cheeks whereas Jade escapes any significant wounds despite that terrible start; in fact now she plain hassles the older singer into desperate avoidance circles as Buchanan needs some respite to regain her focus but gets whacked across the face instead and slumps into a shrieking disaster as Jade stacks up the barrage and traps the aching girl in the corner well before the two minute mark. Keisha just covers up high but leaves the midsection open for a proper pounding and Ewen just rips into that hole to make her foe scream repeatedly inside the final minute and confirm all the pre-fight expectations. Ola Jordan might have brutalized Jade not that long ago but Keisha's in no shape to take any advantage and just sinks on jelly knees with eyes closed and has to accept Ewen blasting her into redemption and almost chopping in half as the bell comes to the rescue and has coach Gina Wild pondering the towel throw to spare Buchanan some kind of injury here.
Round 7:
Ewen doesn't even sit down during the interval and if there wasn't any Sugababes pride at stake, Buchanan would have quit on her stool most likely. However she rises for the seventh to meet instant barrage of punches that smacks her gloves aside seconds after the bell and enables Jade to thunder into Keisha's face with utmost fury... A quick left/right combo slumps Keisha into a moaning pulp and she doesn't even notice the uppercut on the jaw THAT LAYS HER FLAT ON HER BACK moments later... Keisha just ragdolls to the canvas and takes her time in beating the count, she sits up at six and makes a desperate lunge at eight to rise up at the very last second... her eyes are gloomy though and she doesn't respond to the referee's call and wobbles straight back to the ropes just staring at Jade with little awareness... Ref has to call it a day but nobody in the Lioness Club camp disagress and it's perhaps better the fight ends before Keisha gets seriously hurt. TKO7 Jade Ewen!!!
AFTER: That was a bruising display from the youngest of the Sugababes contingent and not exactly her trademark destruction of an otherwise inferior opponent. Jade mauled Keisha into a stoppage rather than plain knocked her lights out and took several minutes before actually finding her stride which either tells the Liverpool audience she hasn't shrugged that Ola Jordan disaster just yet or she simply wanted to develop a more mature and composed performance in a fight she was always favored to win. Still, Keisha had her chances inside the opening three rounds but just couldn't punish a strangely cumbersome Ewen and another opportunity like that could never materialise again!
What's more important though, Jade fully makes amends for the Amelle Berrabah fiasco and gives the new line-up a much needed success to leave the Sugababes War all square with Mutya Buena and Heidi Range destined to settle it among themselves next.
