Cassie Scerbo versus Sarah Hyland
Words: Bazz / Results: Lookout!
Before: “I’m not taking anything lightly. This is another fight in a very competitive league. Pointy’s been telling me the names of fighters who started slow and came around over and over. It’s like a broken record but that’s okay he scared me enough. Sarah’s getting my full attention today.” Cassie Scerbo explains from the podium.
“This is a big chance for me. She’s the biggest name fighter I’ve gone up against so far. She’s fought for the title a couple of times so I need to make an impression. If I can do that then I’ll get management and on up from there.
Cassie’s in for a brawl tonight!” Sarah Hyland’s last comment draws a glare from Scerbo as they descend from the podium.
Sarah resplendent in a bright yellow bikini, gloves and shoes announcing the advent of spring her hair hanging loose. Cassie in a navy blue bikini with yellow lettering on the backside of the bottoms announcing “Scerbo” with navy gloves and shoes. Scerbo’s long hair hanging loose like Hyland’s.
Re 1 Both girls out to center ring with Scerbo starting things off with a couple of stiff jabs that catch Hyland. Hyland retreats not used to the quickness of the Bazz blonde. Scerbo chases her down but Hyland counters with a right hand cross that catches Scerbo’s chin. The girls clinch and wrestle with upper bodies until the referee breaks it up and Hyland quickly lands another right hand while being broken away from a helpless Scerbo bringing a groan from the crowd which firmly believes that a sucker punch has been thrown. Scerbo reacts with a barrage of jabs that Hyland tries and mostly fails to block. Retreating into the corner Hyland is again successful in landing a couple of punches as Scerbo closes in. Modern Family girl clinches again and begins a series of mauling punches to Scerbo’s midsection. Ref lets the two girls go at it in close quarters for the last two minutes of the round much to the chagrin of Cassie Scerbo who endures mostly ineffective punches that nonetheless score points with the judges and give Hyland the round. While walking back to her corner Scerbo is met with some boos and jeers from some of the Modern Family crew led by none other than Ed O’Neill. Blonde flyweight gives back a furrowed brow that seems to put everyone into retreat except O’Neill.
Rd 2 Hyland follows instructions from her corner and basically bear hugs Cassie Scerbo from the start. Scerbo wiggles every which way to disentangle herself but to no avail. As is sometimes the case with Scerbo the opponent’s game plan reduces to controlling her by corralling her any way possible and with Hyland it involves hanging on for dear life. Sarah throwing short punches at the midsection and burrowing in like a ground hog on a vegetable garden. Scerbo with her head popped out of the scrum tries to get some punches back with little effect. Referee allowing the mauling to continue frustrating Cassie to no end. Hyland continues her “ground chuck” like assault into the belly with occasional jug shots is grinding out the round with the complicit approval of the ref. Scerbo finally gets her hands free and begins throwing buggywhip punches to Hyland’s side and at one point throwing up her hands in disgust to the ref who simply shakes his head as if to say “no help here”. Round ends with Hyland on an amazing two round streak and Ed O’Neill apoplectic with euphoria ordering rounds of beer for anyone in his section. Meanwhile Scerbo pleads her case with the referee on her way back to her corner with the striped official simply shaking his head with his fingers massaging his chin. This brings about a foot stamping tantrum from the Bazz flyweight and an approving roar from the crowd craving a Cassie Scerbo moment. With that the referee moves in to give the blonde a talking too. Scerbo has resorted to kicking her legs at the ref like a major league baseball manager kicking dirt over home plate. Since he can’t eject Cassie as a baseball umpire will resort too he points to the judges and takes a point away from her much to the delight of Ed O’Neill who is chortling with glee.
Rd 3 Scerbo a steaming freight train powered completely by anger at this point. She storms out of her corner and slaps two stiff armed lefts right into Sarah Hyland’s bread basket. Modern Family completely stalled recovering from the two jabs as Cassie circles and getting a great angle scores a right hand to the head. Hyland staggered and in complete retreat now covers up while Cassie takes to jabbing from a distance as to avoid the dreaded clinch. Scerbo’s punches are boring in on Hyland as she takes out the frustrations of the previous rounds on poor Sarah. Crowd treated to a symposium in speed and elusive ringsmanship with Cassie circling Hyland slamming her with left jabs and right hands that are effectively decimating the brown haired beauty. Hyland tries to climb out of the corner but she’s stepping into fence post holes and that’s not going to outrun Scerbo. Sarah able to stammer her way to the other side of the ring and lean on the ropes covering up against Scerbo’s withering assault. Cassie gives first the ref and then the Modern Family section of the crowd a glowering stare complete with furrowed eyebrows. Ty Burrell is the first to respond with a “Sweet mother of Captain Kirk! She’s a beast!” “Is she looking to go with me? Does she want to go? I’ll get right in there and wallop that growl right off her face!” Ed O’Neill follows up until he is reminded by Julie Bowen that Cassie Scerbo is a 5’-2” girl.
Rd 4 Hyland not wilting showing Cassie that she’s not hurt coming out and throwing a couple of jabs but she can’t dodge the Scerbo express which comes complete with its own jabs and right hands thrown at such angles that Hyland can’t even see them coming. Even her attempts at tying up Cassie are met with agile dodges to the middle of the ring and then more right hands to the wilting fighter’s head. Scerbo in control now leaning in and slapping jabs at Hyland hitting her at will. Crowd roaring loudly as Cassie puts on a little show but not to humiliate Sarah but to torture the ref. She’s leaning over towards the ref after most of her punches and mouthing “is it okay to throw punches or should we hold each other and dance?” After a few moments of clowning the ref has had enough and issues another one point penalty to Cassie Scerbo’s score. With that Cassie simply shrugs. The ref brings the two fighters together and Scerbo pounds out two lefts and a vicious right and DOWN GOES HYLAND! Three deliberate punches negate any penalty that the now impotent ref can hand down as Sarah is down on her back counting the light bulbs in the arena ceiling. Ed O’Neil pleading with the downed Family girl to get up. “You don’t understand my contempt for this Scerbo girl!” Ref taking his time with the count finally gets to ten and it’s a Rd 4 KO for Cassie Scerbo!
After: Scerbo holding no grudge against Sarah Hyland helping her up and leading her back to her corner. “Yeah I think that Sarah did a good job. She knew that she needed to tie me up to have any chance tonight and that’s a tough strategy to win with. . . unless the third person in the ring is demented.” League note: this comment and related tantrums and tauntings aforementioned third persons in the ring during the fight being reviewed closely by FCBA officials for possible administrative penalties.
“I like Sarah and since she doesn’t have much management I’m going to work with Pointy to see if she can train with us once in a while.” Scerbo hands down her view of things just as she is confronted by none other than Ed O’Neill and Ty Burrell, the latter of the two visibly shaking. Scerbo and O’Neill have about a 20 second stare down and then O’Neill grimaces and in a jovial way holds out his hand.
“Congratulations! That’s a helluva jab you got. I just wish ya hadn’t used it on my girl.” Scerbo shakes the large man’s hand and responds. “Yeah I know how ya feel. I’ve got a few guys that get nervous when I get into the ring.” Scerbo points behind the two guys where Pointy, Big Pauly and The Wiz are standing with arms folded. At that point Ty Burrell lets out “Oh God! We’re going to die horrible deaths!” “Hey you know Uncle Wiz, Mr. O’Neill was with the Steelers. Mr. O’Neill this is The Wiz. He’s with Front Street.” Cassie Scerbo interrupts the stare down long enough to break the ice.
“Well she’s sort of right. I just had a try out. Lasted the summer, that was it, but it was a great experience. . . “ Ed O’Neill gently pushes Ty Burrell aside as he strolls over and shakes hands with the three men. They return the greeting and soon the four of them are talking and back slapping each other in the middle of the ring while Ty Burrell cowers to the side and Cassie Scerbo applies a cold compress to the forehead of Sarah Hyland.
