(28 YO, 5’ 7 ½, 10 wins (9 KO)/13 losses,  since 2011, Pretty Little Punchers Inc.)
(24 YO,  5’6, 10 wins (6 KO)/5 losses,  since 2011, HMK Productions)
Words: Archer   Results; Lookout

Before:  Both fighters are determinedly optimistic in the prefight. Shay Mitchell is on a 2 fight winning streak, while Margot Robbie is trying to bounce back from a TKO loss to Emily VanCamp, and both clearly want to win this fight.

“I would a fool not to notice that, even though we came in the same year, Margot has better record than I do,” Shay Mitchell said, facing the issue squarely. “there is no way that 10-5 isn’t better than 10-13, except that I feel I have more experience, even if it wasn’t the always the good kind, but I have learned from my losses. I’ve started to win regularly and I mean to keep on winning. Margot is a fine opponent, but she’s someone I need to defeat in order to rise in the division. I have been working hard and I feel ready to beat her.”

“Shay is one of the hardest working young fighters around,” said Margot Robbie, “and I respect her experience level. She is the kind of fighter I need to beat in order to progress in my fighting. Losing to Emily VanCamp made me realize that each fight is a step and winning it means you either go forward or go back. I am determined not to take another step back by losing this fight. I don’t expect it to be easy, Shay is too tough for that. but I do expect to win it.”
The two even shake hands at the podium as the press conference ends. That’s certainly refreshing (if not quite as exciting as those that end in chaos and catfighting.

The air of young professional continues on fight night. Shay in white one piece with bright green jungle plant print. Green gloves and boots with white laces. Margot in one piece, mostly white with a black faux-bra top stripe and black buttons in two columns down the front. Black gloves and boots, white laces. Smooth ring instructions and glove touch.

R1: Shay likes to be aggressive early and this bout is no exception. She goes right for Margot at midring and aims some quick jabs at Margot’s face to make the Australian flinch. Margot uses her own jab to give Shay a shot in the mouth to establish some respect. Fighters now circle each other for some serious probing. Shay bobbing and weaving is a difficult target for Margot, who is taking some steady pounding in the ribs. Margot finally tries some offensive of her own, trying to work her way forward, but getting clipped about the head and hooked to the tummy. Margot grows discouraged from these counters and pulls back. Shay hops after her and gets some nice straight rights into Margot’s forehead to put a shudder through the blonde’s body. Margot in retreat, trying to protect herself while her head clears. Shay in punching pursuit, can’t quite manage to steer Margot to the ropes, but she lands plenty of leather to assure she wins the opening episode.

R2: Margot urged by corner to show some offense this round is quick to oblige. Shay gets her chin lifted by Margot first shot, an swift right uppercut that sends Shay up on her tiptoes. Margot goes to the body with some heavy gut punches that puts Shay on rubbery legs. Margot backing Shay across the ring towards the ropes with a beatdown clearly on her mind. Shay can sense the danger and tries to pull herself together by using her jab to slow Margot down. It takes some solid jabs to the face and couple of hooks to the breasts, but Margot has to back off and start circling. Shay cautious and defensive, but stays out of trouble as the round progresses. Margot keeping up a steady pressure, but not getting good openings and has to settle for a comfortable win on points.

R3: Shay clashes with Margot early in this round and that ignites a furious, rolling battle that the fighters on a full tour of the ring. Very exciting to watch as Shay drives Margot backwards, but Margot showing she can fight backing up and then suddenly reverses things with a digging hook into the pit of Shay’s stomach. Now it’s Shay backing up and fighting to keep an aggressive opponent off her. Then another reversal as Shay slips an uppercut under Margot’s gloves to bang her chin hard and follow up with a cracking right to the jaw. Margot now on her heels and jabbing wildly as Shay swarms in. Margot finally able to stabilize the situation by some good banging shots off Shay’s head. Shay slowing down, but not stopping all together. They end up at midring, circling and punching. Margot then goes on the attack going banging Shay to the head and then finishing up to the body. Shay’s defenses harden around her jab and Margot backs off, but she’s pulled out a close win on points for this round.

R4: Shay chooses to let Margot come in this round and then catches her off guard with a left feint and a smashing right to the jaw. Margot hurt by the impact, keeps her gloves up through sheer instinct as Shay follows up with an all-out barrage of  punches. Shay trying to get to Margot’s head and bring her down, Margot going face in gloves gets her head bounced, but she keeps moving and trying to mitigate the impacts. Shay not pleased she can’t seem to land a knockdown punch, she shifts her back to Margot’s body. Margot’s midsection worked over like a heavy bag before a championship fight. Margot grimacing as she feels these blows got through innards, but she doesn’t try to counter, she just lets Shay expend energy. Results is a shutout round for Shay, but Margot is still standing, though with an aching body and unsteady legs.

R5: Hard work by the HMK corner gets Margot up and fighting this round. Shay eager to build on her R4 success moves in with some rapid fire punches aimed at Margot’s head. However Margot successfully ducking or blunting the incoming. Then she makes a quick move to one side and smashes Shay upside the head. Shay staggered and Margot coolly moves in front of her then unleashes straight rights and lefts to the chest and face. Shay knocked back, but she’s still got her jab and duels with the advancing Margot. Margot getting touched up by Shay’s jab, but Shay’s head is bobbing from repeated shots. Shay forced to keep backing up and finds herself against the ropes. Shay fighting with desperate body shots to escape, but Margot is churning her arms to keep the leather pouring into Shay’s body, driving her against the ropes. Shay finally resorting to clinches to slow Margot down and buy herself some time, but her punching is slowly suppressed and she is just hunched up taking at the bell. No surprise that Margot wins the round wide on points.

R6: Shay shows she can recuperate from a beating just as fast as Margot as the PLP corner people do their magic on her between rounds. Shay out and on the attack from the bell. Margot obliged to work hard to fight Shay off, but Shay is moving nimbly this round and she’s getting in some nice licks to the head and body that catch Margot looking another way. Margot having trouble landing her counters for much of the round. Shay just moving too fast this round and keeping Margot off-balance. Margot finally able to land some counters late in the round to avoid a shutout, but Shay finishes looking very pleased at her comeback round.

R7: Margot trying to wrest control of the bout away from Shay, who isn’t about to give up the advantage. Makes for more exciting back and forth action. Shay striking at Margot’s head, while Margot aiming for Shay’s in return. Heads being swatted from side to side and knocked back regularly. Faces lumping up as the minutes tick by, but neither fighter is backing down. At first they are circling, but this ends with their just standing in front of each other and firing away. Shay suddenly goes to the body and doubles Margot up as she takes stutter-steps backwards. Margot hunching up as Shay gets to romp to Margot’s chin for a few exciting moments. Margot’s legs go rubbery, but she saves herself from going to down by clinching Shay. Margot more cautious the rest of the way and Shay settles for on points. Both fighters showing discolored lumps all over their faces from the many punches landed this round. Both slow to get back to their stools and collapse wearily into them. Round of attrition took a lot out of them both. Fans wonder who lost the most from the exchanges.

R8: Shay slow off her stool this round as Margot cautiously approaches behind licking punches. Shay sluggish at first, but the makes an effort to move in, striking to Margot’s belly and then swinging for her chin. Margot grunts as the punch sinks into her gut, but she ducks under the chin shot and brings her own answering uppercut right crunching into Shay’s chin. Shay falling back with groan and Margot leaps forward from a crouch finding that chin again with her uppercut. Shay lands on her butt with a crash and then falls to her side. Margot standing over her blinking in surprise until the referee orders her to neutral corner. Shay aware of the referee’s counting, gathering her scattered senses and finding the strength to get back on her feet. She makes it up at “Eight..” and after a quick check, the referee waves Margot back in. Margot with a determined look on her face drives Shay back to the ropes, Shay jabbing but without much power or accuracy. Margot putting all her strength into a blistering body attack as Shay slides along the ropes. Shay knees give out and she sags forward into Margot’s arms. Margot throws her back and Shay stands there, arms at her sides, eyes blank, utterly helpless. Margot cocks her right for the finishing stroke, but referee darts  to protect Shay who swoons against the ropes. It’s over!
The Winner: Margot Robbie TKO8.

After: Margot Robbie not looking much better than the defeated Shay Mitchell has to be assisted from the ring. It’s not until the next day that she is up to talking with the press. She’s got plenty of battle bruises, but a big smile of victory seems to have taken away all the hurt.
“That has to be one of my toughest—if not THE toughest fights I’ve ever had,” Margot tells the press. “but it felt so good to beat Shay Mitchell. You always value what costs the most and this one cost me a lot. Luckily I could pay the price of victory thanks to the great support and training I got from my management. Emily Vancamp? She’s in the past. Now I am ready to go ahead and see just how far I can go around here.”
Shay Mitchell has to wait until the next day as well, she just as bruised and swollen-faced as Margot, but she has the extra pain of having lost the fight and it shows in her haunted eyes, though she tries to keep her voice steady as she talks to the press.

“I thought I was beating her. We were both getting worn down, but I thought I had more left. I think I tried to finish her too quickly and it was over. Losing is painful, but it you use it to learn it can make you stronger in the long run. Some might say considering I’ve won more than I lost, I ought to be really strong by now. Of course, that’s not the case, but I think I am wiser than I was before this fight. I’ll go on and I’ll start winning again. Some day I’d like to encounter Margot. I hope things will go much differently then.”

Real action fight that probably could have gone either way, but it went Margot Robbie’s way in the end. Should make the Emily VanCamp loss a distant memory as she looks bigger wins in the year ahead. Shay Mitchell finds herself regrouping again and looking to get back on the winning track. Should be an eventful year for her as well.
