KATRINA LAW VS KRISTANNA LOKEN
(Words: Bonzo / Results: Lookout!)

Before: Katrina Law put in a tight spot: fighting slots are rare, last bout was a lost title shot last September, she’s got plenty of competition in her own stable – after Nadia’s Bjorlin return win last month, Kat’s now got to strut her stuff. Things look even bleaker for Loken: the woman who went 31-13 from 2003 to 2006 (including a 10-0 in 2006), has gone 5-11 ever since. The Kristanna Loken glass chin has become a mystical object in boxing: everybody claims it exists, but Kris still desperately rebuts all claims that she’s not the six-feet punching beast she was once thought of. Katrina Law weighs in on the debate: “I know that Kris was once the most dangerous fighter of the entire division: a woman destined for long-term domination of our sport. But everybody knows that the Kristanna Loken of 2015 is not the one of 2005 or 2006. Now, Loken is just the litmus test for knockout artists. It’s like everybody who wants to make a name for herself at welter needs to knock out Big Kris at least once. We know how possible it is, we’ve all seen it happen, but she’s a meaty big girl, so everybody’s got to prove it in the ring. Today’s my turn!” - If Kristanna had a say in it, the fighting could already start there and then, after that kind of speech: she’s positively fuming with Katrina-hate now. “She’s gonna pay. That’s all I can say. I’ll kick her sorry small-girl butt all over the ring. She’s just a big-mouth is all.”

R1: Roughly four inches separate Kristanna and Katrina in height, and it shows throughout the first round: Loken enjoying being big and tall – she deliberately steps into her foe, punishes Kat with crossed arms, almost ramming/driving her shoulders-first to ropes, just playing with her a bit before going to distance and not allowing her girl inside. Law settles into a jab mode, trying to bob and weave her way close – Loken’s verdict: girl, you’re too small. Great look for Kristanna here: she’s dominating the ground, just has to use her loooong arms to stake out her claim for superiority. Law’s quick, though: famed for her bantam agility mixed with welter power, Loken can’t shut her out entirely. Kris all hulky, but a bit unwieldy in her big-girl movements when Katrina stalks her, sneaks up for a blitz attack – some body punches, hooks on the nose, uppercuts grazing chin – Kris hastily retreating, spooked. That’s Kat’s tactics: despite height disadvantage, she proves dangerous, uses mobile legs to be a constant threat for Kris. Big blonde in a controlling look: has to allow Kat in for, maybe, three or four times, but always able to get back into a wide, distant mode with whipping jabs. Law making an impact, though, not allowing Kris the hoped-for wide win in the first: most pundits agree that Kris looked more scared of Katrina’s attacks than Katrina did at being shut out by tall, jab-feeding Loken.

R2: Katrina ups her game – increases tally and intensity of attacks. Law so smooth: Kristanna increasingly under pressure to hold her opponent at bay, looking klutzier, as Law just roams in front of her, creeps up to water down Kris’s defenses, get through to nose/chin/cheeks – Loken pressurized, despite the wide arms/tall approach, it is Katrina who’s moving Loken to ropes! Law’s sprawling out with her punches – constantly has Kris in tight earmuff, mixes up fainter jabs that knock at Loken’s defending fists with wide gut-wrenching rights into blonde’s body. Loken tries to keep calm: she’s sturdy, counters off ropes with BIG uppercuts but not quick enough, as Kat’s head moves all over the place, and Kat’s fists always find little spaces, little openings, as she knocks back Kris’s head a few times, making the big blonde’s knees buckle, let her lean back into ropes, and the audience jump up shouting. Loken perhaps less endangered than it looks: she can’t shut out her foe, but Katrina still has difficulty finding the right mixture of timing, weight-of-shot and quickness. Law’s very much more active/effective, though, and remains in control through rest of second round.

R3: Law keeping up the activity, forces Loken to engage more – Kris settles into clockwise rotation, bravely ranges inside with jabs to chest: toe-to-toe action ensues! Law’s keeping her head low, shoulders hunched, pumping body-blows to belly and ribs, driving hooks right into under Loken’s breasts, has Kris all puffing and choking from the vicious punches. Kristanna’s slugging back with a vengeance, eyes grim, brimming with loathing – fight increasingly losing any regular set-up, as girls turn onto a hate-filled destruction course. Defenses suffer as a result in the second minute: first Kristanna has to withstand a series of jawline hooks that almost topple her sideways before the blonde settles straight-up into an uppercut that crushes Katrina under her chin: LAW’S HURT! Punch is so hard Katrina’s eyes roll back, her head actually joggles up a bit and she collapses forward into Kristanna’s meaty arms. Big blonde already confident of victory, but Katrina’s not unconscious, just hurt: actually keeps on ramming rights into Kris’s body like on some numbed but still-working autopilot. Kris groaning in receipt, but feeding smaller woman left hands to side of head, rattling her head back and forth. What a slugfest! Law in panicked retreat: blonde stalking her BIG. All agility gone from Kat’s legs – she’s a battered wreck, but she’s undeterred, head as low as she can get it, bravely wades into another wrecking punch-out close up with big blonde. Girls’ hips swaying, bodies tumbling from impact – but now KRISTANNA IS GETTING THE WORST Of IT! Gut-checks, jug-mugs, chin-checkers on both sides: yet suddenly Kris stops punching – she’s groaning, hurting, only defending, eyes all dimming. Katrina wide awake: the punches have her girl ready for take-down. Then: a crushing right hand to left cheek – Kris all wobbly-butt, the impact is delayed but then felt like a shock: LOKEN’S ON HER KNEES! Proud blonde swaying there helplessly, using hands for support, hair all disheveled: then LOKEN’S TOPPLING OVER! Her weight no longer under control, big Kris drops forward, mouth connecting with floor. Blonde frantic to get up, scrambles back onto her knees in a dizzy haze, but she’s wobbly and not able to summon her body back to duty – this thing is over! Loken not making it back up in time, punched out by a devastating KO3 Katrina Law!

After: Law hurt herself, but pounding her chest in Kris-busting glory, proud that her punches reduced her foe into rickety blonde rubble, still unable to get up, heaving with exhaustion on her forearms. Can’t really blame this on a glass chin: when welter girls go all-in, somebody has to go all-out. Bottom line: Law makes a huge statement to gym-mates that she’s ready for competition (one journalist apparently overheard her muttering “Govich’s got to go” after the fight); Loken still unable to bring back that magic big-girl power she once possessed, despite all her physical prowess.
