Words: Archer   Results: Lookout

Before: “It has taken me a long time to get a title again, let alone the Unified Title” a happy Mary Elizabeth Winstead tells the press.

“Naturally I want keep those belts as long as I can, but I don’t intend to risk those belts against unworthy opponents. Gemma is more than worthy, you look at her 23 fights since she started and she’s only lost 6 of them. This won’t be easy, but I am determined to show that I am now fighting at my peak and the best way to do that is a long run at the top of the division.”

“Well,” says Gemma Arterton with a smile, “if you ever decide to change careers and become a publicist, you will certainly have a place with me and my team, that was a very nice summary of my career to do. I think it is only fair to add that this will be a special fight for me—it’s my first chance for a title and it would only be polite to thank her for the opportunity. It feels amazing to be in a fight with so much on the line, but I know it would be even more amazing to wear those title belts. So be warned, Ms. Winstead, I am determined to complete my rise to the top by taking your crown.”

Mary smiles (a bit tightly): “Just you go and try it.”

“Oh, I will, my dear Mary, I most certainly will,” Gemma replies with smile of equal tightness.

Mary comes to the ring on fight night in a sunny yellow bikini, with black boots and gloves for contrast. Hair pulled back and secured with a big yellow bow. Gemma in bright purple two piece with darker purple gloves and boots. Hair a couple of inches off the shoulder and hanging loose. Very professional ring instructions and swipe of the gloves. Determined looks on both fighters, but they are saving their energy for the fight itself.

Rd.1: Both fighters have a reputation for liking plenty of action to the body and being able to absorb opposing leather. They prove it right from the start tonight as Mary and Gemma clash at midring fighting in very close and pumping short, hard ones into each other’s bodies. Mary getting her breasts pounded with rising hooks, then getting her belly smacked hard when she tries to protect her rack. Mary’s countering with a defensive jab trying to match Gemma’s body attack, but Gemma starts circling and making herself a more elusive target. Mary losing the punch count as the minutes tick away, but she does not lose her composure and is getting in some good shots to Gemma;s midsection before the bell sounds. However the round is clearly going to Gemma on the cards.

Rd 2: Gemma showing more aggression this round, she immediately starts circling Mary and after a flurry of hooks to the body to keep the champion focused there, she strikes at Mary;s head. Mary getting her head swiveled by lightning rights and lefts to the cheekbones, then her chin gets lifted by equally quick uppercuts. Mary backing away, trying to use to her jab to keep Gemma away, but Gemma quick on her feet, finding holes to continue to bang away at the Winstead noggin. Mary’s looking confused, but instinctively still able to use that jab and it finally scores on Gemma’s face. Nothing like leather in your eyes, mouth and nose to make a fighter back up and this is what happens to Gemma. However Gemma takes only a brief breather before heading back at the champion. Mary’s used the relative lull to regain her senses and Gemma has less luck getting at Mary’s head this stanza. Gemma then gives Mary’s body some hooks to keep Mary hunched up. Gemma cops another round and Mary’s starting a getting some red shinny spots on her cheeks and chin.

Rd. 3: Mary warned by lightweight trainer Jen Garner that she needs to put a stop to Gemma’s dominance of this fight. Mary nods and this time she is the one quicker on her feet and delivering quick shots to Gemma’s face. Gemma recoiling in some confusion, there is a little trickle of blood from one nostril, but she has her gloves up protectively. Mary just goes down to the body with some very powerful hooks first the belly and then up into Gemma’s rack line. Impacts are making Gemma shudder and she has to back away from them. Mary trying to herd Gemma to the ropes, but Gemma keeps slipping away. Mary has to settle for winding her first round of the night by a wide margin.

Rd. 4: Gemma a little slow off her stool at the start of this stanza. Mary a lot faster and is all over Gemma just before she makes mid ring. Gemma gets struck hard to the chin by straight right/left combo and then gets doubled up by rising right hook deep to the belly. Gemma sluggish to react and this time Mary able to get her opponent driven to the ropes. Fierce effort by Mary as she tries to keep Gemma pinned on the strands , finally resorting to using her left forearm to hold Gemma in place while using her right to smite Gemma’s body. Referee jumps in to put a stop to this and gives Mary some stern warnings. Mary just nodding absently, she’s focused on Gemma who doesn’t look to happy at the rule violation either.  As the action resumes, Gemma using clinching tactics to disrupt Mary’s attack and work herself away from those ropes. Mary looking frustrated at Gemma’s escape, but she still wins the round wide.

Rd. 5: Gemma not caught napping this round. She pulls herself together during break and is off quick at the bell to meet Mary. Fiercest action so far tonight as Gemma tries to swamp Mary with a rolling barrage of punches to the head and chest. Mary hunching up from the impacts and countering with rising hooks to Gemma’s breasts. Gemma stepping quickly gets a right smash to Mary’s jaw that jerks her head around, then she moves back and catches Mary with an uppercut that snaps the champ’s head back. Mary reeling back with Gemma in pursuit clearly trying to drive Mary to the ropes. Mary responding quickly, trying to step away using her jab for cover. Gemma staying close, getting her face knocked back by the champ’s punches, but pounding back hard to Mary’s body. Action now very intense as they are toe to toe and slinging away without let-up for what seems like a very long time. Finally, Mary pulls back, but she’s still using that jab, but Gemma’s back in this fight with a close taking of this round.

Rd. 6: Intense action continues this round as Mary tries to fight her way back into control, but Gemma is trading her punch for punch. They are moving around more this round with Mary driving Gemma back as she alternates between head and body attacks. Then Gemma able to bring the advance to a halt with a ringing shot over Mary’s guard to her chin and then pounds belly and breasts to back Mary up. Mary able to circle around and strike at Gemma’s flanks, bringing her ribs into the action. Gemma not liking this and tries to shift around the champ’s attack, but Mary not going away. Two of them circle and punch to the bell with Mary edging Gemma out on points.

Rd. 7: Intensity actually increasing this round as both fighters seem to have their second wind and moving on refreshed legs as they circle and hunt each other. First, Gemma scores first with a flurry that bangs Mary’s head around with shots to cheek and jaw. That yellow bow of Mary’s is looking sweaty sodden but dancing from the impacts. Mary more interested in driving Gemma back which she does with smashing straight rights and lefts to the breasts and a follow-up hook in the gut. Air gets blown out of Gemma’s lungs and she has no choice but to retreat. Mary after her, but before she can do much damage, Gemma’s jab comes back into play and Mary gets her lips cut open by a jab to the mouth. Mary only momentarily thwarted, she comes back shortly with another attack on Gemma’s body that has the challenger trying to back away from the pressure. Good jabbing in retreat by Gemma, but Mary learning to evade these counters to maintain pressure. Gemma showing better evasion late, but Mary still able to take the round close.

Rd 8: Gemma on the attack early and Mary seems willing to play defense in the opening minute. Gemma tries circling for openings, but she’s leaving openings of her own in the process. Mary strikes back with more pounding to the torso and Gemma’s offensive loses steam. Gemma slow to shift to the defense and Mary swiftly firing at the challenger’s jaw.   Gemma getting her head swiveled, tries to  force Mary back with the jab and there is another explosion of toe to toe action. Back and forth head punching, Mary gets her head whipped around and that yellow ribbon goes flying, but Mary swings back with a powerful left over Gemma’s high guard and into her jaw. GEMMA GOES DOWN! Gemma Arterton’s legs just seem to lock up and she crashes onto her side. She lays there on her chest, trying to get her arms and legs to function again as the referee starts his count. Gemma rises to her knees but can do no better as the count reaches “…TEN!” Gemma hangs her head , arms wrapped around her battered body and endures hearing all the cheers for the winner AND STILL LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION: MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD! (KO8).

After: Mary teary-eyed as she walks the ring, waving to her cheering fans, just as she completes the circuit, she notices that yellow hair ribbon on the canvas.  She calls to trainer Jen Garner who hurries over to remove the gloves so Mary can recover the yellow ribbon. She ties it around her hair and then raises both arms in triumph. Gemma is just being helped by her feet just turns away, so close, but not close enough, it hurts more than Mary’s punching.
“Wasn’t that a great fight?” Mary excitedly tells reporters sounding like a rookie who just won her first bout. “I admit I deserved that scolding from the ref, but you can get carried away in the middle of a fight. That’s why we have referee’s—to keep things within the rules—most of the time. (She grins). Gemma fought a good fight, but she just couldn’t take as much punishment as I did. That’s what won me this fight—I was the tougher fighter tonight.”

“I lost and that’s all that matters,” Gemma Arterton says ruefully. “It was a good first title fight, but I want a title fight that I win. So the lightweight division has not heard the last of me and I am more determined than ever to win those belts. I know I can do it and one night I will!”

Exciting title bout with plenty of back and forth action.  The ability to sustain punishment and inflict more on her opponent does seem to have been the difference for Mary Winstead tonight. Gemma Arterton showed she belonged in a championship ring and we expect this not to be her last opportunity. As for who Mary will defend her belts against next--no word leaking out of the Foxfire camp, but any MEW fan must be wondering just when she’ll face her great rival and frequent nemesis Yvonne Strahovski. No word from Lookout Boxing on this prospect either.
