BEFORE: If Helena Mattsson defeated Alaina Huffman on the Boxing Day PPV then she'd have been the Lookout! Atlantic Boxing's pick for tonight's lightweight title vacated by Miranda Kerr. However she was stopped in seven rounds then and not only enabled Doutzen Kroes to take over the LAB leadership but also bumped Huffman right into the title picture instead!
On the other hand Karolina Kurkova worked on a deal on the other side of the Atlantic and rumours in Cannes are that this might well be her last BBU outing for a while before she heads over to America as early as next month already! And that's regardless if Mattsson takes her down tonight or not! Will the potential title shot convince her to stay around in Europe for just a little longer? Even Denise van Outen couldn't get a straight answer on that!
Helena Mattsson wears a light blue one-piece swimsuit with a yellow cross over the left hip and white gloves. Blonde hair tied in a high curled ponytail. Karolina Kurkova wears a white bikini top, blue knickers and red gloves. Blonde hair tied in a fancy bun on top of her head. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division.
...there's a delay before the opening bell since Malika Menard lets her opinion be heard once again and shouts from the VIP lounge to trigger instant double death stare from both Mattsson and Kurkova in the ring... U gotta love/hate those Frenchies!
Round 1:
Both girls settle into a reserved start throwing single punches without mean intentions however Mattsson ups her tempo after a while and begins to search for that piercing jab to put the model under more serious trouble. Kurkova's happy to fend the Swede off and shows supreme defence to avoid any hiccups at this early stage of the bout but is eventually forced into a faster stance when Helena closes right up and switches on the ribcage to make something happen. More single punches on the response from the Czech who skims off the temples and gets caught by a quick uppercut that finally triggers some heat as Mattsson jumps into a late flurry of punches smacking them between the fellow blonde's gloves and sending Kurkova's head back & forth before the bell interrupts the Swedish charge.
Round 2:
Helena fancies another go at the model and drops the reserved approach from the opening round; she hassles Kurkova for a while and lands more single punches that may impress the judges but hardly punish the Czech who in turn unloads a ribcage response and digs into Helena's guts with her most meaningful charge of the night yet. She pierces the liver area and forces the actress to cover up low but misses a hook on the temple and enables Mattsson to fight back from her heels as she drills the mitts with a clubbing cross and follows it up with another hook on the eye that bends Karolina into a sudden escape. The pace of the fight slows down again in the final minute as Kurkova's really happy to bide her time and whatever tactics she has there, Mattsson doesn't seem to bother about it accepting the sluggish hit & weave display.
Round 3:
The Cannes crowd demands some real action and Mattsson steps it up once again to bury the Czech model under a serious barrage in the opening minute however she bounces off the guard far too often to make any difference and gets clobbered on the ribcage afterwards as Karolina jumps into counter attack and rips the Swede to the body to stagger her in the middle of the ring. This time she finds that piercing uppercut and sends the curly ponytail for a swing before blasting a cross on the mouth putting Mattson onto the ropes as the actress just couldn't keep her weight on the back foot anymore. She tries to escape from the dangerous position but Karolina's right there jabbing at her ribs and clipping the breasts before another cross whacks her on the eye and bellows out in a desperate earmuff that Kurkova tries to dismantle for remainder of the round but only has the Swede rocking back & forth on her feet with a quiet whimper.
Round 4:
That was a poor round from Mattsson who nonetherless tries to stick it into Kurkova's face again but the high swinging just doesn't find the target as the model vastly improves her agility and become far more effective in pounding Helena's midriff. The actress is forced onto her heels and starts to weave around in futile attempts to break free but eats several overhand shots from the Czech who finally makes the better use of her reach advantage and keeps the actress at bay in a controlled mid range stance. Helena begins to scowl in frustration as she just can't step it up to her foe anymore and only grazes the forearms and fails to punish her face either; she gets spun to the side when a late piercing hook nails her on the temple instead but Kurkova is happy to walk Mattsson back into the neutral corner where she can apply more tummy assault as Helena reverts into a crowd-annoying clinch to see out the clock.
Round 5:
There's something up with Kurkova for sure as she maintains the controlled effort from mid distance and just shuts the Swede off in lacklustre pursuit; not many head shots on offer and as Helena becomes more aggressive and looks to trap the model down in a leather frenzy any which way, she falls into a counterpunching response and soaks up solid facial assault from the second minute and begins to ache out her troubles. Left/right and another left from the Czech who dances well on her toes and just mauls the Swede into a stubborn earmuff before driving her up the alley and into the chest for more loud shrieks. Mattsson tries to punch back over the top but gets blitzed by another cross and sags on the ropes late, another duck & weave display follows but Kurkova still finds a big hook on the navel and clips the rack just before the bell to leave Helena shaking her head in complete frustration as the bout begins to take a really ugly turn for the Lookout! Atlantic hopeful.
Round 6:
Helena begins to lose temper now after getting shut off in the middle of the ring thanks to another agile display from her opponent and Kurkova maintains the looping pressure, working to the body first and shifting up high later to clip the breasts and then the jaw. Mattsson just doesn't have the speed and strenght in her to throw the Czech model off her stance and has to seek that one haymaker breakthrough sooner rather than later. She swings more aggressively and splits Karolina's mitts a couple of times but doesn't really hurt the model despite digging some punches into her cheeks and eats a ribcage assault on the counter which bends her off the comfort zone and allows Kurkova to bump her into the ropes come the final minute where the predictable & relentless gut check leaves Mattsson aching butt-in-ropes for yet another time.
Round 7:
HELENA GOES HAYWIRE!!! She's clearly had enough of this tactical affair after going behind on points and rips into the model's body piercing the liver area in frantic fashion. Perhaps Kurkova didn't have it all under control as she misjudges her moves and allows the actress to really tear into her ribcage which lights up the Cannes crowd on the spot. Mattsson leans on the front leg and bumps the Czech onto her heels while driving up with uppercuts and clipping the rack several times which dumps Karolina into a moaning struggle. She skims off the forearms and bounces off the Mattsson's forehead but it's too late to stop the rout as Helena finds her heaviest punch yet and smacks the model on the mouth before rocking her with a massive piledriver on the left eye. Kurkova sags onto the ropes with eyes closed and for once doesn't use the footwork into her favor as Mattsson comes crashing down on her and riffles a left/right combo on the nose before adding one uppercut more on the chin... DOWN GOES KURKOVA... the leggy model just tumbles hard on her left side and groans out in pain as Helena shouts at her: "What next, ######? Got anything left?". That's a sign of real frustration and Karolina shoots back upright at six trying to adjust her bun that become loose in all the head snapping struggle. She leaps at the actress immediately after the command and looks unmoved by the knockdown but Helena believes otherwise and engages in a flyweight-like face bashing to goes awry quickly as the model rocks her with a brutal hook on the nose and adds a cross on the eye to drop her guard before riffling a put away hook on the temple... Oohh.. MATTSSON'S LEGS GIVE WAY and she collapses on her backside just as the bell rings. Ref can't enforce the count and has to push Karolina back to her corner as the model glares down at the actress and vows to destroy her completely in the next round as the fight has finally errupted with some fireworks to satisty the French audience.
Round 8:
Mattsson's lucky to escape the knockdown unharmed but Kurkova chases her down and like it or not, both women tangle up in another head snapping frenzy with Helena doing great to untie the model's bun with all her efforts but soaking up an increasing pressure on the nose that soon begins to leak blood and turns the actress to the side. Kurkova barks in her attempts and when she notices the blood spill, she simply goes nuts and hammers along into the Swede's face trying to chop her down and outright punish her... Helena realizes she loses the exchange and tries to jump back to safety but loses her footing and it's a lethal mistake as she drops her arms too low and has no chance to avoid Karolina wrenching her with a massive one-two on the jaw... DOWN GOES MATTSSON again, this time crashing onto all fours and just aching her heart out as the ref starts the count... Kurkova swings her long hair behind her back and stomps her foot waiting for her opponent's fate but Helena manages to get up at eight despite a bloody nose and shaken up presence. She nods back to the referee and is send back out there but her footwork is gone and she is rooted to the spot when the Czech model riffles along into her face and snaps her curled ponytail all over the ring... Mattsson drops her gloves alltogether and is punched back into the ropes where she closes her eyes and begins to scream out in pain as Karolina shows her no sympathy whatsoever and almost knocks her pretty Swedish girl out cold on her feet... AND THE REF STEPS IN... he hauls the model off before she blasts Helena out of her senses completely... TKO8 Karolina Kurkova!!!
AFTER: Helena just slumps into the referee's arms and the Lookout! crew must escort the battered Swede into their corner as Karolina shakes her head and sports a cheeky smile in seeing her foe's unceremonial demise: "Such a pretty girl! What a shame she couldn't handle my wrath!". The crowd fully accepts the brutal conclusion to this fight which started slowly but finally delivered some goods in the end. Asked about her reserved approach in the early rounds the Czech winner explains: "Look, van Outen! I have BIG plans for the future and nobody over there will be impressed if I knock some blonde bimbo in five rounds or something. I have to learn to be aggressive in the money rounds since I fully expect things will be extremely difficult for me against all those Hollywood A-listers. I've had my share of action on the set of 'Chuck' but now the BS stops! It's now or never and I haven't decided what to do with that BBU title shot everyone seems to know about other than me! Yeah, my money's on Doutzen Kroes tonight but we can always meet in Caesars Palace or Madison Square Garden instead of Cardiff International Arena.... we've still got a score to settle you know, and perhaps she won't look as good over in America as she does here in Europe. Let's wait and see..."
